*Ally's POV*

Thankfully for me my morning flew by. Well, calculus kinda sucked because Claire was in that class with me and she spent the entire 50 minutes glaring daggers at me. I wonder what made her so much madder at me all of a sudden. Surely she can't know about my lunch plans with Chase. She would have had to been listening pretty closely to our conversation to hear anything we'd said. But then again, it is Claire we're talking about.

"Hey," I heard from behind my open locker door. I grinned and moved the door to reveal a smirking Chase.

"You're so weird," I told him with a playful eye roll.

"Yeah, I know," Chase shrugged. "You ready for lunch?"

"Yes," I grabbed my lunch bag and closed my locker. "Did you tell your brothers and sister that you wouldn't be eating with them today?"

"No… should I have?" he asked nervously.

"Well, they might have gotten a bit mad at you if you told them the truth," I said, walking with him down the hallway. "If they ask you later you might just want to tell them that you went to the library."

"Why would I lie? Who I hang out with doesn't concern them," Chase told me.

"Yeah, but I don't want them to get mad at you or anything," I said. Chase stopped me in front of the outside door and put his hands on my shoulders, forcing me to look at him.

"Ally, I'm going to hang out with you whether they like or not," Chase told me with a serious look on his face. "Okay?"

"Okay," I nodded, showing him a little smile before he let me go. I didn't really want him to let go though. C'mon Ally, you've got to get this little crush under control. What if I slip up one day and accidently tell him that I like him? He'd hate me. He would stop talking to me, that's for sure. Who wants the hated outcast having a crush on them? Nobody, that's who. I just have to keep my feelings to myself and filter what I say. I can totally do this.

"Ally," Chase's voice brought me out of my thoughts. I turned to look at him and he gave me a weird look. "Are you okay? You kind of zoned out there."

"Oh, I'm fine," I rushed to say. My plan doesn't seem to be getting off to a very good start. "I was just thinking."

"About?" Chase asked. An unwelcomed blush made its way to my face. I'm gonna have to lie.

"My dad," I said. "He left this morning for a business trip and he only told me right before he walked out the door."

"He only told you that he was going on a business the day he left?"

"Yeah," I sighed. I didn't completely lie to Chase. I've been thinking about my dad all day.

"How long is he going to be gone for?"

"About two months," I shrugged. "Probably longer."

"How can he just leave for two months without telling his daughter?" Chase wondered out loud.

"You seem to be more upset about this than I am," I giggled, taking a seat on the bottom bleacher.

"So you're saying you're totally fine with it?" Chase asked.

"Well, of course not," I mumbled. I wasn't used to talking about my family to anyone other than Rupert, but he doesn't really count since he practically is the only family I have. "I guess I'm just used to it."

"That doesn't make it any better," Chase said, giving me a sympathetic look. "If anything it makes it worse. Has he done this before?"

"Yeah, lots of times," I told him. I have no reason to lie about that. "But this is just the longest he's ever going to be away."

"There's something you're not telling me, isn't there?" Chase asked softly. I momentarily froze and debated whether to tell him or not.

"Well, he's going to Minnesota," I started. "And Minnesota is where the woman my dad supposedly cheated on my mom with lives. After he came back from his 'business trip' there things started falling apart for my family. My parents started fighting a lot and my dad stopped going places with us. Basically he knew that he'd been caught so he didn't think there was any reason to even pretend to care about us anymore."

"I'm sure your dad cares about you," Chase said comfortingly, wrapping an arm around my shoulders and pulling me closer to him. Another blush made its way up my neck at the contact.

"I'm not so sure about that," I said quietly.

*Bree's POV*

"Hey Bree," I heard from behind me. I closed my locker with a sigh and turned around to face him.

"Hi Dylan," I said awkwardly.

"You ignored me all weekend," Dylan said, getting right to the point. "What is going on with you? Is it me?"

"No, it's not you," I rushed to say. "I was just busy. Rose spent the weekend."

"Uh huh," he muttered. I could tell he didn't believe me. "And you didn't happen to notice any of the 23 texts I sent you?"

"Um… no?"

"C'mon Bree," Dylan groaned. "What's going on?"

"Nothing," I said.

"Bree I know something is bothering you," Dylan said persistently. "Why wouldn't you just tell me?"

"Because it's about you!" I blurted out. My eyes widened as the words that slipped out of my mouth registered in my brain. I slapped my hand over my mouth to prevent me saying something else I don't want him to know.

"Kinda already figured that part out," Dylan scoffed, rolling his eyes. "I just want to know what I did."

"Nothing," I groaned.

"Don't lie to me Bree," Dylan ordered. "I know you're mad at me for some reason and all I want to know is why."

"Fine," I sighed, giving in. If we didn't have our last two classes together and we weren't partners for the next month I definitely wouldn't have told him. But I was bound to slip up eventually. "First of all, I'm not mad at you. Secondly, I'm mad at you."

"You just said you weren't mad at me!" Dylan exclaimed, throwing his hands up in frustration. "Why are girls always so complicated?" he asked himself.

"Well, I'm not mad at you per say, but I'm mad at what you've done before," I said, awkwardly looking down at floor.

"What did I do?" he asked.

"How many girlfriends have you had?" I asked instead of answering his question. A look of understanding crossed his face.

"Is that why you've been ignoring me?" he asked. "Because of my reputation?"

"Well, it's true isn't it?" I snapped. "Are you going to answer my question or not?"

"None," Dylan said simply. I gave him a disbelieving look before turning on my heel and heading to the cafeteria. I just want to get away from Dylan right now and talk to Rose. And I have a feeling he won't come and force a conversation with me in front of her. Or any of my siblings for that matter, but Rose probably scares him more. "Bree, I'm telling you the truth!"

"Oh, so you just kissed all those girls when you weren't even going out with them? That makes it a lot better," I said sarcastically.

"No," he said, grabbing my arm and pulling me back to him. "I can guarantee you that I haven't kissed at least half of the girls you think I've had."

"Oh really? And why should I believe you?" I rolled my eyes. I said it before and I'll say it again. I just wanted to get to the cafeteria.

"Because I care about you!" Dylan exploded. "I care about you and I have nothing to lose from lying to you since it seems like I already lost you when I didn't even really have you!" I crossed my arms over my chest and looked down at the ground. I really wanted to believe him, but I didn't know if I could. Especially after the Ethan thing. "Bree, if I didn't care about you, why would I be trying this hard? Huh? Why am I always finding excuses to see you? Why do I love spending time with you so much?" His finger lifted my chin to make me look at him. "Why do I feel this way about you?"
