The Last Year: An Original Story

"Into the Darkness, Part 3"

"Such sadness. Klaus, he took everything away from you: your family, love and freedom…"

Those words began to echo slowly in Lyn's mind as she found herself standing in another room in yet another memory. It was her cottage in Clarendon, but Lyn knew she was still dreaming.

"You can never be safe, not as long as Klaus is still alive," Esther told Lyn as she appeared out of nowhere. Lyn was beginning to understand. As she opened her mouth to speak, a young teenage boy ran across the living room and out the open door.

"Jake?" Lyn asked in confusion. Lyn slowly walked towards the door, but Esther grabbed her arm. "Focus, Lyn! No more getting pulled into your memories. You must focus on waking up so you can go back to Mystic Falls. You have to take action, like how you tried before – with Jake, with Lana, and with your life in Clarendon," Esther demanded.

Lyn faced Esther as the elder woman let go of her arm. "How do you know these things? About Jake and Lana?" Lyn asked in confusion. Esther took a deep breath, "I have been watching you for a very long time, Lyn. Despite what you believe, many witches have been watching over you. You have survived for this long because you are the one who can break the cycle."

"Cycle? What cycle?" Lyn murmured. "The cycle of suffering my children has brought onto this earth," Esther answered curtly. "Please, help me end it," Esther begged.

Lyn did not know much about Esther's children, other than there were many of them. Lyn only knew two – Klaus and Rebekah. Despite being a captive of the Mikaelsons, Rebekah was like a sister to Lyn throughout the years. Lyn only saw Klaus as the true harbinger of death.

After thinking carefully for a few moments, Lyn finally met the desperate gaze of Esther's. "I will help you," Lyn spoke boldly. Esther beamed happily. "Thank you! Your ancestors will be happy to hear the decision," Esther responded.

"But, I already drank the sleeping potion. There's no way for me to wake up on my own," Lyn said, puzzled.

"That's where I come in. I am connected to the Other Side, where all witches who have passed and are here to lend their powers through me. I can cast a spell to wake you up," Esther explained. "So, then, all I have to do is go back to Mystic Falls and help protect the doppelganger?" Lyn asked.

"Actually, it's more likely that you won't remember anything that happened in your dream. Reversing a powerful spell takes a toll on everyone – the caster and the recipient. Still, I know you will do the right thing when you awake," Esther added. Lyn was frustrated at the news, but knew it had to be done. She nodded to Esther, who then took Lyn's hands and began chanting.

Lyn closed her eyes as she felt her sense of vision falling apart. Save the doppelganger, defeat Klaus. Save the doppelganger, defeat Klaus. Save the doppelganger…

Lyn's eyes shot open and her mouth opened to breathe in violently. She was sitting in the couch of her safe house in Louisiana, just outside the border of New Orleans. Her mind was racing, as though she had just been saved from drowning.

Why was she here? Lyn could not remember how she got home, as the last thing she could recall was getting ready to head out to the witch supply shop in the French Quarters. She was going to buy ingredients for the eternal sleeping potion!

Lyn stood up and analyzed the living room. It did not appear that there was a break in, but something was awry. Lyn noticed an empty potion bottle on the floor. She picked it up and stared at it for a few moments.

Lyn didn't know why or how, but all she could think about was getting back to Mystic Falls to help the doppelganger. Lyn reached for her bag on the living room table and got her cellphone out. 57 missed calls and 28 voicemails! Lyn listened to all of them, all while packing up her things. She could not believe that it had be many days she was awake.

Whatever the reason that caused her to wake up from a spell that should have stuck, Lyn knew getting back to Mystic Falls was more important. She continued to listen to the voicemails while grabbing her keys and heading out the door to her car.
