Chapter Forty One (It's a Gift)

We are in the attic as I listen to Captain educating Jonathan about the sea. Jonathan listens to Captain's every word and I can tell they are very close. Carolyn looks for Jonathan and is upset because he hasn't done his homework. He is instead spending time with Captain. They have a small fight and I realize that Captain does act like the boy's father. It makes Captain happy; I see it in his eyes.

He tells me he is going into town to go shopping with Jonathan. Apparently they want to apologize to Carolyn by giving her a gift, Captain's idea I think. I think Captain has a funny idea of what would be good for Carolyn. I guess Captain and my playmate don't have any money. Captain goes through his chest looking for something he can trade for money and finds something he calls scrimshaw. He gives it to Jonathan to trade for money, but somehow Jonathan gets in trouble.

Captain is good though and explains that he gave the Scrimshaw to Jonathan, so Carolyn is not mad at my playmate anymore. Then Captain goes to visit the Scared One because he has lots of money and gets the money from him.

The money is used to by something called a parasol for Carolyn. When she and Martha find it they laugh about it, clearly she does not think much of the Captain's gift. I think his feelings will be hurt. He is pleased when she finds his gift. He loves her, the big dope. He speaks tender words to her and expects her to use her gift but I know she doesn't want to. Then he overhears how she doesn't like it and somehow switches her gift, he gives her the Scrimshaw instead. She admits she didn't want to hurt his feelings and he says he knows that. I think they have somehow become closer.
