Chapter Forty Three (Make Me a Match)
Carolyn's friend Aggie has come to stay with us. She is unhappy as it seems she has lost her mate. Carolyn tries to help but Captain is unhappy that she is here. Captain does not want Carolyn to meddle, but that seems to be something this whole family is good at.
Carolyn and Martha decide she should meet Claymore. Surely there must be a better choice somewhere? Turns out they are both cheap, maybe they will get along fine.
Captain show Jonathan how to look through his telescope when Carolyn comes up to ask captain for a favor. She wants him to set up Claymore; Captain seems to object to marriage. Jonathan watches them argue, he'd rather listen to them, but they push him out of the room. Captain doesn't want to help Claymore get married, but then reconsiders knowing that it would keep Claymore away from him.
I am after Claymore again, I do not like that man, and he cheats at everything. I decide to go off with the playmates. Captain decides to help Claymore with the surveying. I know he has ulterior motives. He later tells me that he convinced Claymore to ask out Carolyn's friend. They go out and get along well.
I sit with Carolyn and the children at night. They don't understand why Claymore and Aggie like each other and neither do I. I go to bed with my playmates, but I hear Claymore and Aggie return. Captain speaks with Claymore apparently he is having second thoughts about Claymore getting married; he is uncomfortable with setting them up.
He goes to talk to Carolyn, tells her he is unhappy. He asks Carolyn to discourage Claymore's thoughts of marriage, she says she won't so the Captain goes back to talk to Claymore. He tells Claymore not to get married, tells him to shop around. Claymore points out that the Captain knows nothing of marriage and Captain is forced to agree. He disappears when Aggie goes into the room. She is called by her old mate and decides she will go back to him leaving Claymore sad and alone.
My two people try to comfort him by explaining how much he would have spent on Aggie and he feels better. Money is what he loves most. Silly man.
