Chapter Forty Five (Jonathan Tells it like it was)

Jonathan is doing well at school and in some sort of contest, I hear as he recites it to the family (minus the captain). Captain wishes my playmate good luck. I watch as Captain and Carolyn stand close together, comfortable with each other. How can any two people be so blind?

Later that day everyone waits nervously to see how Jonathan has done. They pretend they are not worried and try to act normal. I see him come home and bark at him, letting them know everything is okay, that I love him no matter some silly contest. Jonathan has won the contest. Captain shows up and acts like a proud father, I sit next to my playmates content that all is well. I am proud as well and tell them so.

Jonathan practices at home and gets too many suggestions from everyone and they overwhelm my friend, thankfully he tells them this. I try to convince Martha to give me treats but she says only my playmates will get them; I will have to convince her otherwise.

Captain reads Jonathan's paper but finds some fault in the facts, and tells Jonathan the truth. Because my playmate thinks so much of the captain, he changes his paper and everyone is upset by what Captain says is the truth.

Even Candy was tormented by her playmates at school, I do not understand why everyone is so upset, it's just words on paper.

I am sleeping on the bed when Carolyn comes in and talks to Jonathan. She is wonderful with him and they come and sit on the bed with me. It's a matter of doing what is right versus doing what is expected. I don't know how humans think on this.

I go for a walk on the beach with my pal when I see Carolyn behind us and I run to her, she scratches my head, and the Captain appears. They talk about what the Captain told Jonathan. They discuss right versus wrong. Carolyn points out that Jonathan is a little boy and the Captain looks after him thoughtfully.

He joins Jonathan on the cliff and I know he is up to something. Captain starts to say different things, things other than what he first told Jonathan. What is going on? Jonathan looks confused. I do not completely understand but Captain is doing this to help my playmate. He is giving the boy an out. Then he gives him another idea that is appropriate and Jonathan is happy now.

Later after the contest is over Captain is glad things worked out but sad that Jonathan thinks less of him. Carolyn and Captain exchange another long look of love. What can I do to get these two together?
