Chapter Forty Seven (Medicine Ball)

Carolyn is not feeling well today, Jonathan goes in her room to look out the telescope and she makes him leave the room. Captain talks to him and tells him to go back in, smile, please and thank you. It doesn't work well and Jonathan is confined to quarters. Captain acknowledges women can be unfair.

Carolyn is cranky, and she argues with Captain. She has a short temper, and he knows she doesn't feel good. They have breakfast but Carolyn doesn't eat much. Captain cheats and tips Martha off that Carolyn isn't feeling well.

The young doctor comes by and gets some medicine for my lady. He says she has something called virus X and knows how to heal her, Captain does not believe this.

I go with Jonathan to pull some weeds for Captain. He empties Martha's broth and starts to cook Willow Bark Golden elixir; he says it will cure Carolyn. I am skeptical, but I am a dog so what do I know about these things? We come back after finding the weed for Captain and then he puts brandy, lots of it in the pot. Then the Scared One show up, I bark to let them know. Martha really likes the broth, but it is my duty to bark at Claymore, he is not welcome here. He brought the young doctor's medicine for Carolyn. He thinks Captain wants to kill Carolyn and have her join him. Captain would never do that, he wants people to live their lives. He wishes he could live his as well.

Now Captain switches the medicines, so that Carolyn will get his medicine. Martha brings it up and gives it to her. Soon she is asleep and Captain watches over her. He loves her so much.

She dreams, but I wonder what she dreams about? Does she ever dream of us? Or of him? Dogs dream of chasing squirrels, and mice, you know our work. But we dream of playing and running and being with the dogs and people that love us, I'm sure it must be the same for people. I know she loves him, what would she dream of him? Surely she dreams of them being together? Of them touching each other, holding each other? Kissing each other? I bet that is her dream. I do not hear her as well as Captain but I see how they stand together, how they look at one another.

When she wakes up she looks better but seems upset, she looks sad to have woken up.

The young peep shows up again and says that Carolyn is doing much better. Captain confesses he switched medicines. Carolyn forgives him for 'waltzing so beautifully'. He doesn't understand, but I think I do. She was dreaming of Captain and wants to be with him.
