Chapter Forty Nine (Son of the Curse)
I am sleeping by Carolyn when she accuses Captain of making ghostly noises. Why would he do that when he is right there with us? Then they hear the noises together and figure out that my playmates are up in the attic. The kids have found a new clock that they want to put up on the wall, and Carolyn agrees that it's okay to do that. The next day Captain appears and says the clock comes with a curse, especially for Claymore, and he seems secretly pleased.
Claymore is very upset. Claymore says to never start the clock, it is cursed and it will cause the death of the last Gregg, which he claims to be.
I am out with the kids roller skating when they are talking about the clock, Jonathan thinks the skate key will start the clock and I go in with them to see if it is true. They start the clock and go upstairs. Claymore seems to have a heart attack when the clock is started. Captain did not start the clock but Carolyn asks him anyway.
I bark to get into the room where Claymore is and I am admitted. I do not like the man but he is so scared that I decide he could use some comfort. So I sit on his lap and allow him to pet me. The clock is started again after being stopped and Claymore panics, he is such a silly man. It is only a clock. Claymore starts to cry so I go and get the wuss a kleenex. Such an excuse for a human.
Captain shows Claymore who will be at his funeral by taking Captain's hand. Although Carolyn doesn't notice me, I stare at her. How obvious can Captain be? Why hasn't Carolyn figured it out yet? She must wholeheartedly believe that she can't touch him. Why else can't she see what's in front of her?
Claymore feels he is dying so he is giving things away, he decides to give Gull Cottage to Carolyn. Captain is upset, he doesn't want Claymore with him for all eternity, and I can't say that I blame him. I shudder at the very thought! Captain shows up as the clock is chiming, but it stops before striking twelve and Captain is very grateful.
Captain gives the deed to Gull cottage to Carolyn and she tears it up. Jonathan wants to fix the clock again, but Carolyn hides it away. He says something very funny about that being 'a waste of time.'
Captain greets Carolyn, and she tells him that still doesn't believe in the curse. He reminds her that once she didn't believe in ghosts and she just gives him a sweet smile. I know that she thinks the Captain is her ghost whether she admits it or not.
