Author's Note: Sorry for the delay folks. I've got school and a crazy life. Trying to juggle a lot right now. And I hope everyone affected by the weather is safe and warm. I have a friend stuck in the snow, but she's safe at home. Luckily.
Chapter 48: Adjusting
The next morning, Mike awoke with the others and started making breakfast with the little bit of food they had left from what they took on the road. Rose took care of making a bottle for Emmett and changed his diaper so Mike could cook for the others. Micky and Davy helped Peter out into the dining room just as Mike had finished the pancakes.
"Who's hungry?" Mike smiled at his friends as Willow set plates on the table for each of them. Mike finally felt safe. They were in the middle of nowhere and hadn't been followed. It would take an enormous amount of bad luck for them to be found now.
"This is the last of our food?" Rose asked.
"Yeah," Mike answered. "But we can go out and get more. We still have plenty of money."
"We also need a few more things for Emmett," Rose said. "Now that we're settled, we need a crib and he'll need some toys, too."
"Of course," Mike said. "Can't imagine how bored he is."
"He's not bored," Davy said. "Peter and I have been playing peek-a-boo with him whenever we get a chance."
"Sure," Willow said, "but he's gonna need some more entertainment."
"We'll head out in a bit," Rose said.
"Not 'we'," Micky said. "I think Davy and Willow should go. We're safe, but our pictures were in the paper. Someone in town could easily recognize any of us. Especially Rose. You're picture was the most recent. Davy, Peter and Willow are the only ones who won't be easily recognized and Peter can't go anywhere for a few weeks until his leg heals. The rest of us stay here until the heat dies down."
"Good point," Mike said turning to Davy and Willow. "You two ok with that?"
"Of course," Davy answered.
"Just make sure you guys keep a low profile anyway," Mike said. "Better to just blend in and keep to ourselves."
"Great," Micky said. "I'll give you guys some money. Do you guys know what to get?"
"Sure," Willow answered. "Davy'll know what kind of food to pick up and I know what a baby needs."
"Thank you," Mike said smiling at Davy and Willow. While Davy and Willow were gone, Mike and the others worked on continuing to clean up the rest of the cabin. Mike handed Emmett to Peter to watch while he sat on the couch again. Mike smiled when they played peek-a-boo again; Emmett wasn't laughing yet, but he made some gurgling noises as though he was trying to laugh. They had only just finished cleaning when they got back and Mike and Micky went out to help carry everything in. Mike began unloading the groceries and Davy and Willow went upstairs with the rest of the baby stuff. Mike told them he'd be up in a bit to put everything together, but they'd started by the time he got upstairs.
"I thought I said to wait," Mike said looking at the half built crib in his room.
"We thought we'd start without you," Davy said. "No reason not to. We can do this. We're all a team, right?"
"Yeah," Mike answered trailing off. He wasn't really sure what to say. He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair lost in thought. He wanted to take care of his son, but he didn't expect anyone else to help him. It bothered him a little with how much Rose was helping; this was his son and his responsibility. But something about the way Davy spoke to him and how he was so eager to help resonated with Mike. Then there was Peter sitting downstairs laughing and playing with Emmett and everything everyone else had gone through to help him and Emmett. The things Micky allowed himself to put up with so they could wait and escape after Emmett was born.
It suddenly sunk in that they really were a team. He always saw them as family, but he hadn't put much thought into how they were going to work with having a baby around. Seeing Davy and Willow, someone who just a month ago had been a perfect stranger, working together to help him eased his mind. He relaxed a little and smiled.
"Thanks, guys," Mike said.
"We can finish up here," Willow said. "Go downstairs and take a break."
"Thanks," Mike said. He really was tired from all the work and he'd gotten up a few times in the night when Emmett had cried. He walked downstairs and saw Micky making sandwiches for everyone for lunch after checking on Sarah and making sure she stayed relaxed. By now Sarah was about 4 and a half months pregnant and was still having slight pains. Micky had told her to sit and rest whenever possible, but she was stubborn and kept trying to help around the cabin. Every time she had, Micky told her to sit back down and rest only to have her promise she would get all the rest she needed once the cabin was clean enough for them to live in more comfortably.
As he looked around at his friends, he smiled. Davy and Willow came back downstairs after putting the crib together and Davy nearly took Micky's hand with him as he yanked the sandwich away. They weren't home and their lives weren't back to normal, but at least they were all safe and happy. Their lives would never be normal again, and not just because they had a baby around now. But at least they could still be happy. And safe.
Over the next several months, they'd gotten the house completely clean and had started working on repairs around the house. If they needed supplies or tools, the man who owned the cabin they'd met in the diner brought it to them. Willow took care of Peter and made sure that Sarah rested as much as she could. Willow had pretty much taken to the rest of the group instantaneously. It was just like Sarah and Rose; she became one of them almost overnight. And often times, Mike caught her and Peter exchanging glances across the room. Sometimes when she touched him, his cheeks would flush a bright red for just a second and he'd fall silent. Mike, of course, knew exactly what that meant. He'd seen how shy and bashful Peter was around Valerie. It had taken a lot of work from the rest of them to get Peter to even talk to Valerie, let alone dance with her.
Micky helped Mike around the house a lot, but also did what he could to make sure Sarah rested the way she needed to. He took the time at night while they were all relaxing and just enjoying the end of their day to hold her in his arms. They spent as much time as they could together while still doing the work around the cabin. Mike could tell Micky would grow more and more worried as it got closer and closer to Sarah's due date. Mike couldn't blame him. He'd been terrified when Emmett was born, but the moment he'd held his son in his arms, he felt like everything was going to be ok. Mike tried to figure out how to explain it to Micky, but soon realized that Micky had to figure it out in his own time.
Davy had worked as hard as he could around the house, sneezing at the dust that popped up and going out to buy whatever they needed, which with the rate Emmett was growing included a lot of new baby clothes along with food. A few times, Mike thought Davy seemed depressed and eventually Mike asked Davy one night after everyone else had gone to bed. Davy admitted he missed their old life, but was at least happy that they were safe. And that they were still together. Mike had asked Davy if he regretted not going back home when Micky offered it and Davy adamantly insisted he didn't. Davy could never leave them. No matter what. They were his family and wherever they were was home.
Peter had completely healed over the months as well. He had first slowly started walking and then walked with a stick Davy had found for him, but eventually was able to walk completely normally again. Almost as soon as he'd healed, he'd started helping fix things around the house. He wasn't as good with carpentry or with wiring as Micky and Mike were, but he did what he could. Mostly sorting through trash and rubble and doing what Micky and Mike told him to do. He spent a lot of time, however, with Emmett, too. The two had formed a bond in the time Peter had spent unable to walk since he was the one to watch and play with him because of that. Emmett smiled and giggled when he heard Peter's voice more than some of the others. He, of course, also giggled and smiled when he heard Mike and Rose, who'd nestled into the surrogate mother role easily and happily.
Mike and Micky were out in the front yard one cold night getting ready to repair a window and just talking about various things. They were just about to lift the window pane the owner had bought for them to install when Willow came running up to them. She looked pale and worried and there was a scratch on her face; it was minor but it still scared Micky to his core.
"It's Rose," Willow said quickly. "She told me to get you. There's...there's something wrong with Sarah."
"What?" Micky asked quickly but didn't wait for an answer. He let go of the glass pane and ran toward the house as quickly as he could. The moment he entered the house he made for his and Sarah's room, but Rose held him back.
"Micky, stop," Rose said.
"Willow said there was something wrong with her," Micky said. "What's wrong with her? Let me see her."
"She needs help, Micky," Rose said. "She's in labor."
"Ok, so what's wrong with it?" Micky asked.
"She's gone sort of...mad," Davy said rubbing his cheek softly.
"She's not mad," Peter said looking scared. "She just doesn't really remember us."
"What?" Micky asked.
"She punched me," Davy said as Micky's heart sank with the realization of what was happening. "Thought I was going to hurt her, so she punched me."
"It took all four of us to tie her down," Peter said.
"Why did you tie her down?" Mike asked behind Micky.
"Rose told us to," Peter said. "So she didn't hurt us or herself."
"What would cause her to do that?" Mike asked. "I don't understand."
"Delerium," Rose answered. "It's incredibly rare. Like 1 in a thousand rare. If that. Claire saw only one case in her whole career. She told us she had a patient who thought an alien was growing in her stomach so she jumped off a building. That's why we have to keep Sarah restrained until after the pregnancy. If we can pull her through it, the delirium should clear up. No one really knows what causes it, but it could be something with the blood flow. Micky, she's bleeding."
"How bad?" Micky asked hoarsely sinking desolately into a nearby chair and burying his face in his hands.
"Not that bad right now," Rose said. "It's minor, but if she fully delivers right now, she'll bleed out."
"What does that mean?" Mike asked.
"She needs a hospital," Peter said.
"We can't take her to a hospital," Micky said hating every syllable. "We take her to the hospital and they'll find us out."
"You don't know that, Micky," Peter said. "We could use an alias. They may not know it's her."
"They'll know," Micky said. "Her picture is in the paper. They'll recognize her. Hospitals are good at that."
"She needs medication, Micky," Davy argued.
"Micky's right," Rose said. "She can't go to a hospital, but so are Davy and Peter. I don't know what to do. The medication she needs is only available at a hospital and if she doesn't get it…"
"What?" Mike asked. "What will happen? Will she die?"
"She could," Rose answered. "And so could the baby."
"Do you know what she needs?" Mike asked. "Can you make me a list?"
"Yes, but it's not like you can walk right in there and buy it," Rose said.
"No, but I can steal it," Mike answered.
"Mike, you can't do that," Rose said. "If you get caught it'll be just as bad for us. They'll arrest you and Claire will find you."
"So I'll make sure I don't get caught," Mike said.
"I can't ask you-" Micky started.
"You aren't asking anything," Mike interrupted. "I'm doing this. I can't just sit here and let Sarah die. She's family. And this is the only way to save her and the baby. So you can either give me the list or I can guess. But I'm going."
"I'm going, too," Davy said reaching for his jacket from the hall closet.
"Me too," Peter said walking over to join Davy.
"Mike, I…" Micky started not really sure what to say. He knew that what Mike was suggesting was dangerous and for that he wanted to desperately talk Mike out of it, but he also knew it was the only way to save both Sarah and his child. As much risk as breaking into a hospital carried with it, bringing her to the hospital was much riskier. And if she didn't get the medications, the risk of her and his child dying were extremely high.
"We'll get what she needs, Micky," Mike said placing a hand on his shoulder comfortingly. "Don't worry. Everything's gonna be ok. Just stay here and take care of Sarah and Emmett. Let us worry about the medicine."
"Be careful," Micky said. "And thank you."
"No worries, Mate," Davy said offering a smile. "We have your back, Micky. We always will. Just like you always have ours."
