Chapter 49: Unforeseen Complications
Mike led Peter and Davy around to the backdoor of a nearby hospital. Mike had gone over the plan in the car and each of them had their role to play. He felt nervous about the whole thing; if they got caught, they'd be arrested and thrown into the system where they'd be discovered by Claire and Wayne. And Mike doubted it would be long before Claire discovered the cabin. Before he'd left, he'd pulled Rose aside and told her that if they weren't back in 4 hours to pack up and leave. Do whatever it took to run and leave them behind. Rose hadn't seemed enthusiastic about that idea, but she had agreed anyway.
"You guys ready for this?" Mike asked as they ducked behind a set of bushes outside.
"Yeah," Peter and Davy answered together as Peter picked up a long stick they'd found.
"Let's hope this works," Mike sighed as they waited for someone to come out the back door. It was locked and only opened to those who had the key, so they decided to wait and sneak in at the right moment. They didn't have to wait long; as soon as a doctor walked out, Peter stuck the stick in between the door and the frame to stop it from closing and automatically locking behind the doctor. They waited just long enough for the doctor to walk out of view and quickly snuck in the door.
Once they slipped inside, they hugged the walls and made their way inside the hospitals. They quickly stopped near a door to the linen closet where Mike knew the scrubs would be. Also as expected, they were in clear view of the nurse at the nurses station. This was Davy's cue. Mike nodded at Davy urging him forward and Davy smiled reassuringly back before walking over to the nurse.
"Hi," Davy said walking up to her and offering one of his charming smiles. "I was hoping you could help me. I'm a little lost." Mike and Peter exchanged a quick look with each other to confirm they were ready and quietly snuck inside the linen closet. They knew all Davy had to do was flash his smile at a woman and they'd be lost in his eyes; distracted enough so that Peter and Mike wouldn't be caught sneaking into the closet to steal the scrubs. Mike and Peter quickly took off their clothes and stuffed them in a small bag and put on the scrubs.
Once they were dressed in their disguises, they slipped back out and walked toward a gurney parked on the side of the wall. Mike glanced over at Davy who was still flirting with the nurse and distracting her. Peter stuffed the bag of their clothes under the gurney and started pushing it. Mike followed as Peter pushed the gurney past Davy; his cue to follow them toward the pharmacy. Davy said good-bye and pulled himself away from the nurse to follow them down the hallway. Peter and Mike stopped the gurney in front of a bathroom and waited for Davy to catch up. He told them the directions the nurse gave them to the pharmacy before taking the hospital gown Mike had stolen from the linen closet and ducking into the bathroom.
Once he was changed into the gown, Mike and Peter lifted up the sheets on the gurney while no one was looking so Davy could crawl under it.
As Davy lay down, put an oxygen mask on his face and pretended to be a patient, Peter and Mike, his "doctors", pushed the gurney in the direction they were told the pharmacy lay. It didn't take them long and they luckily found it unguarded. All they had to do was slip inside; the door, however, was locked. Peter tried hard to turn the handle, but it didn't budge.
"Damn," Mike mumbled after he tried to open it.
"What now?" Peter asked softly so as not to attract attention to themselves.
"We're gonna have to bust in," Mike answered.
"That's gonna make a lot of noise," Peter said.
"I know," Mike said quickly looking around. "But that's why I need you to distract everyone and make a bigger noise. Draw them away from here."
"How do I do that?" Peter asked nervously.
"I'm not too sure yet," Mike admitted thinking hard.
"I think I have an idea, but I have to play the dummy again," Peter said poking his head around the corner. "I'm always the dummy."
"You're great at fooling the entire world, Peter," Mike smiled offering encouragement. He knew how much Peter hated playing the fool, but if anyone could make it work, Peter could. "If only they knew how smart you really are."
"Thanks, Mike," Peter smiled before taking a deep breath and readying himself.
"We'll see you back at the car in 20 minutes," Mike said. "Hopefully sooner."
"Right," Peter said.
"Be careful," Mike said.
"You too," Peter said before turning to dart back down the hallway. Mike picked up the empty chart at the end of the gurney and pretended to be inspecting Davy's chart. He only stood there for a few seconds before he heard a loud crashing sound. Peter must have "tripped" over some of the chairs in the hallway and crashed into the wall. Only one person ran passed Davy and Mike to investigate the noise and Mike turned to ready himself to break open the door. He heard more crashing as though Peter "fell" again trying to get up. He heard people trying to help him up, but he wouldn't let them so he could keep distracting them. Mike quickly kicked at the door handle and knocked it open. He told Davy to stay put and ducked into the pharmacy with the bag they'd stuffed under the blankets with Davy.
Once inside, he quickly scanned the shelves and pulled the paper out of his pocket that Rose had written the list on. He scanned the list and quickly found the bottles of medicines needed. He carefully stuffed them in the bag, taking care to cushion them with the clothes so they wouldn't break. He then quickly left and stuffed the bag back by Davy's arm under the sheet. He then quickly but casually pushed the gurney toward the back door they'd entered from. Once they were at the door, Davy jumped off the gurney and grabbed the bag while Mike held the door open for him.
As they approached the van, Mike was relieved to see Peter standing there waiting for them. What he didn't expect, however, was for someone to approach them with a gun yelling at them to stop. Mike, Davy and Peter all turned to face the man with their hands in the air, Davy had to drop the bag on the ground. Mike's heart sank when the man identified himself as FBI.
Back at the cabin, Micky didn't know what to do. He knew he had to check on Sarah, but he wasn't sure he could handle it. If she didn't remember Davy and Peter, would she know who he was? And if she didn't, would he be able to handle it? Micky braced himself and walked up the stairs to his room.
"Micky," Rose said just before he opened the door.
"Does she know me?" Micky asked.
"I don't know," Rose said. "She didn't know me. She thought we were gonna take her baby. I don't know what you should expect going in there."
"I have to see her," Micky said. "I need to check and make sure she's ok."
"Just...just don't expect her to recognize you," Rose said.
"I know," Micky said and walked inside. Sarah lay on their bed, ropes binding her wrists and ankles to the bedposts. It pained him to see her like this. He hadn't seen her like this since their time in captivity and he'd promised he'd never let anything like this happen to her again. He had to keep telling himself that this was for the best. They had to do this. For Sarah and his baby's safety.
"Who are you?" Sarah asked when she saw him and immediately started fighting her restraints.
"Sarah, I'm not going to hurt you," Micky said walking over to her. "I'm here to help you."
"You're gonna steal my baby," Sarah said. "I won't let you! You people have taken enough from me!"
"Sarah, please try and remember who I am," Micky said.
"I remember," Sarah said. "Your his kin; you want to take my baby from me!"
"No," Micky said past the lump forming in his throat. "I…" He trailed off not really knowing what to say. He knew that once the baby was born, she'd be back to normal; this was just the stress on her body. But she had to survive first. Before Micky could figure out what to say, Sarah screamed in pain.
"She's having another contraction," Rose said rushing over to Sarah's side.
"Sarah, sweetie, you just need to breathe," Micky said trying to console her.
"Fuck off!" Sarah screamed through the pain.
"If you breathe, it'll be easier on you," Micky said.
"Go away!" Sarah screamed at him.
"Micky, maybe you should just wait for the others downstairs," Rose said.
"I'm fine," Micky lied. The truth was her words were tearing through him like knives. He hated this. All he wanted to do was hold her and tell her everything was gonna be ok, but he couldn't. She wasn't listening to him. She didn't believe him. She didn't know him. "She needs help."
"I can help her," Rose said. "Just go downstairs. You shouldn't deal with this, Micky. I promise I'll take care of her. You can trust me."
"Micky?" Sarah asked softly as the pain died down.
"I'm right here," Micky said moving to embrace her.
"No," Sarah snapped. "You did something to him! Where's Micky!? What did you do!?"
"I…" Micky trailed off, all words lost in his throat.
"It's ok, Micky," Rose said. "Go downstairs. I'll take care of her, I promise." Micky finally relented. He couldn't take seeing Sarah like this and knew Rose was right. He could trust her to do what needed to be done to take care of Sarah and his baby. Micky stood and turned to leave, but found it very hard. He couldn't just leave Sarah; she needed him. But Rose pushed him out of the room and closed the door behind him.
"She needs me," Micky said.
"She will understand," Rose said. "She wouldn't want you to see her like this, anyway. She'd want to spare you that pain."
"I promised her she'd never be subjected to that again," Micky said. "I told her she'd be safe."
"No one's hurting her, Micky," Rose said. "I hate having to tie her down, too, but if we don't, she'd gonna hurt herself. She'll understand when she gets her mind back. She'll thank us for it."
"How bad is she?" Micky asked not wanting to talk about that aspect anymore.
"The bleeding isn't that bad yet," Rose said. "But it could get a lot worse when she goes into full labor. She's not dilating either. I put some medications on the list to help induce labor. Just from looking at her...she's having the contractions, but she's not dilating." Before Mick could respond, they heard Sarah scream again. Micky almost ran back in the room, but Rose stopped him.
"She's in pain," Micky said choking back tears.
"She's in labor," Rose answered. "Of course she's in pain. Let me handle it."
"Are you sure you can handle it?" Micky asked. "If it's hard for me…"
"I'm not gonna lie and say this is all easy for me, but it's easier for me than it is you," Rose said. "She's like my sister and it kills me, but I know how much more this is killing you. Please. Trust me."
"It's not that I don't trust you…" Micky said.
"She wouldn't want you to be in pain," Rose said again. "Let me do this. Not only for you, but for her, too." Finally Micky nodded, though he wasn't sure what hurt him more: leaving her or staying. He forced himself to walk down the stairs knowing that Sarah wouldn't want him to see her like that. He walked down into the living room and sat on the couch, burying his face in his hands. He was alone; Rose was upstairs and Willow was preparing for the delivery by gathering other supplies around the house.
He had stayed so strong for his friends in the past several months, but he couldn't do it anymore. He was scared all the time. While in the hospital, he was terrified that they would be hurt beyond repair and once out he was terrified that they would be found and killed. Now he was terrified that his child and Sarah would die. And it was killing him that he couldn't even do anything to help her. She had no idea what was going on and even if she did survive, she probably wouldn't remember any of this.
He loved Sarah more than anything in the world. He'd been forced to walk away from her before, and now that he had her back, he couldn't lose her again. He wouldn't survive it. It was more than he could handle. He was sitting there doing nothing while his friends were risking everything for his girlfriend and child. He finally snapped and buried his face deeper into his hands letting the tears flow, unable to really hold them back any longer.
