Well hey there, it's Saturday my dudes and that means I'm back at it again writing some passable-at-best fanfiction for y'all. The itch to write has been strong for some reason so I hope to keep the train chugging. Hope you enjoy!
Still don't own AT for those keeping track.
-Chapter 7, Breakfast Is the Ultimate Ice Breaker-
Our group of rag-tag adventurers are currently back at the treehouse, fresh from a morning spar and enjoying some homemade breakfast.
Silence isn't usually a good sign at social occasions. This silence however is a result of a delicious meal our black and blue travelers are thoroughly enjoying.
"I gotta tell you Jake, of all the places Selene and I've been to, this has to be the best breakfast I've ever had. I mean who puts bacon INSIDE a pancake?! A genius does, that's who!" Spencer pointed with his fork over in Jake's direction after wolfing down his second plate. Even Selene nodded in agreement after daintily finishing an orange slice.
"Awe it's nothing, a dog's gotta have a hobby am I right?" Jake beamed from the praise, pride rolling off in waves. Finn chuckled at his brother's humbleness and proceeded to get some answers from his apparent his new teacher.
"You said you guys have traveled a lot. Where all HAVE you guys been? I mean it's a big world, I get it, but I don't know a lot outside Ooo." Finn asked as he placed his silverware on his plate. Spencer and Selene shared a glance, and then Selene gave him a nod after eyeing Finn and Jake, giving him permission of some kind.
"Man have we been around. I feel like we've been all around longer than we've lived on the island. I've seen places and people you can't even dream of." Spencer patted his now full tum-tum and leaned back in the booth to continue. "I adventured with a Viking that could yell at a dragon to death and suck out its soul. I trained with some ninjas in the forest, one of them had a giant demon fox sealed inside him, so that was fun. I helped this kid and his friends that could control the elements with freaking kung-fu magic take down an evil empire. I hung around a guild of some other mages that could party like there was no tomorrow, and they had talking cats too! They even made me an honorary member!" Spencer pulled back his shirt and pointed to a blue tattoo on his left shoulder blade that resembled a feathery bird sitting on an arrow. "Man, I need to go visit them all again soon…good times." Spencer smiled reminiscing all the memories he had on the road.
'That's weird. I get it they're both clearly experienced and have traveled a lot, but he can't be any older than twenty something…right?' Finn pondered as he listened. Jake held a similar expression as he did the math in his head too.
"Okay I've heard of a lot of things, but I've NEVER hear of any place like that anywhere." Jake said, clearly confused by all the places they have seen. "Plus, how have you had the time to do all that?"
"My lord, I don't think it would be wise to divulge that information." Selene whispered to Spencer, who stayed stoic for a moment, before shaking his head in disagreement.
"No, the guys are cool Selene. I see them sticking around for a while, trust me." Spencer said to his partner with a genuine grin. Selene held her gaze on their hosts and eventually nodded.
"As you wish my liege." Spencer smiled and turned to the brothers who were eagerly waiting to hear this secret explanation.
"Well boys, this is going to be a bit of a mind bomb, so you might want to sit d-, never mind. I have traveled all over the world, but some of the lands I've been to aren't exactly…how should I put this…on this world. You see, there's this ancient portal back home in this sanctum under the temple. Master Raiden and I would use it to go to other worlds to train and help keep peace in the other realms. Eventually he would send me on missions on my own to make allies and learn new techniques and practices for the temple." Finn and Jake almost couldn't believe what they just heard, both slack-jawed and listening intently.
"As for the time thing, well that's kind of crazy too. My lightning magic has affected my body in a way that kind of makes me a superhero, for lack of a better term. Basically, the constant electricity in my body supercharges my cells. I'm faster and stronger than normal, and one year to me is almost 10 normal years. I may seem a spry 23-year-old, but actually I'm around 230 years old…so yeah." Spencer finished as he could hear the proverbial A-bombs detonating in Finn and Jake's craniums.
"Okay…well…that was…a lot." Jake said while rubbing his temples.
"Dude that is SO AWESOME!" Finn yelled as he jumped on the table. The now scattered plates and silverware signaled the end of breakfast.
"…and that, ladies and gentlemen, is why you eat your meal quickly and decisively. You never know when someone jumps on the table." Spencer said nodding with his arms crossed. He looked over to Selene and laughed as she tried to lick a stain of syrup out of her fur.
"Ugh, so uncivilized." Selene groaned with disdain.
"So you're like a real deal superhero?! Man did I hit the jackpot finding a sweet roommate-sensei! You're like, invincible!" Finn ranted as he hopped off the table holding his head reeling as his fortune.
"Well as much as I appreciate the fanfare, I definitely wouldn't say invincible. I've had my keister handed to me a few times and there isn't a power that doesn't have its drawbacks." Spencer stood up and approached Finn, trying to bring him back down to Ooo.
"Huh, what do you mean? Like you have weaknesses or something?" Finn turned to him with a curious expression.
"I'm just saying all magic has its pros and cons Finny. Fire mages and water aren't on the best terms, Earth mages require the right kind of terrain to be effective, nature mages depend on the life force of the land to give them power, so on and so forth." A helpful whiteboard with appropriate pictures appeared behind Spencer as he gave his lecture. (You've seen anime, don't act like you didn't already picture it.)
"Right, so what are your drawbacks then?" Jake added from the table, trying to tidy the mess.
"Might I remind you my liege that is need to know information, and cannot be shared freely." Selene said as she dropped from the table, making her way to the sunlit windowsill.
"I know, I know. I wasn't going to go into all the gritty details. Has anyone told you that you're kind of a buzzkill sometimes?"
"Yes my lord, you have, many times. I pride myself in it." Selene finished as she began her cat nap.
"Glob you're such a mom. Anyways, like my feline friend said, I'm afraid I can't tell you. Seeing as how master Raiden and I are the only users, I can't exactly go telling people how to beat us, not that I don't trust y'all, but you understand right?" Spencer shrugged apologetically.
"Yeah I get it, I wouldn't be telling monsters where I'm ticklish at or anything."
"…weird example but I'm glad we're on the same page. I can tell you about these though!" Spencer turned his arms around exposing his forearms and the solid single black lightning bolt tattoos on each arm.
"Whoa sweet, I never even noticed those." Jake said as he stretched his head over Spencer's shoulders to get a better look.
"These aren't any ordinary tats either, check this out." Spencer said as he tightened his fists, flexing his forearms. The tattoos then gave off a slight blue glow that showed an intricate runic design within them. "The ink used for these bad boys was mixed with a liquid alloy of all the most conductive metals known to us; silver, copper, and gold. I use them like a reverse lightning rod, they focus the lightning and let me shape and release it however I want."
"Jeez, didn't that hurt?" Finn cringed as the thought of molten metal under his skin didn't sound too appealing. Heck he didn't want anything under his skin.
"The pain was immense, but I will do anything in the pursuit of the power to destroy those who stand in my way." Spencer said as he clenched his fists with a grim expression.
The mood in the room took a nose dive and if breakfast wasn't over someone could cut the tension with a knife to spread on their toast. This side of Spencer seemed like it hasn't seen the light of day in a long time.
"Nah I'm just shitting you, yeah it hurt like a bitch." Spencer started to laugh as he held the back of his head with a toothy grin.
"…If we're going to be under the same roof, we need to have a discussion about your brand of humor." Jake said with an unamused expression to Spencer.
"Yeah, Master Raiden had some words about that too, took him a while to get used to it too." Spencer chuckled with obvious embarrassment.
"Oh hey Finn, the sun's almost all the way up, so guess what time it is?" Jake smirked as he got up waiting for a response.
"Is it…Adventure Time?!"
*Ba Dum Tss*
"…I'm not the only one who heard that, right?" Spencer looked around cautiously.
"Heard what dude?"
"…nevermind."
"No man it's sparring time! So, get ready and get your butt outside so I can kick it!" Jake taunted as he made his way outside.
"Oh you are so dead!" Finn shook a fist at his brother going out the door. "How about you and I spar a little too after a bit?" Finn looked over to Spencer, eager to get his training underway.
"Yeah sounds good to me grasshopper, I'll meet you out there in a few." Finn started to go outside to meet Jake when he was interrupted. "BUT…" Finn looked back to see that Spencer appeared as a massive black shadow with cold blue eyes and a booming voice. "I hope you're ready for the most grueling experience of your life! I'll break you down to the foundation and build you up to a warrior you could only DREAM of being!" Spencer saw Finn's terrified expression and could only laugh. "So don't spend it all on the warmup, you're going to need the energy, okay?" He finished with a smile and a thumbs up.
"…um, yeah, okay sure. See you out there." Finn gulped and left the treehouse.
Spencer chuckled and started to make his way to his bedroom to get ready when he heard Selene stir and sit on her haunches.
"Why did you fabricate that explanation for your beast marks and the Electromancer's pact? What benefit was in it for you?"
"Like you said, I can't go around telling folks all about my powers…Plus, to be honest Selene, I don't know if they're ready for that, not yet. These guys treat me like a normal person, they see me as just their roommate and friend. It's nice, you know?" Spencer walked over to Selene's window, looking down at his two new pals sparring outside. "With them…I don't know. It's like I can just be myself and not have to tiptoe around and pretend like I'm something that I'm not. I hate how everyone else looks at me back home, like I'm some untouchable god that you can't talk to."
A very long silence was shared between the two wanderers. Selene knew quite well of Spencer's opinions of home. She was with him from almost the beginning, and through all those years, she watched him grow up into the man that stood before her today. He was always a bright-spirited and caring person, but through the trials and tribulations he met both abroad and at home, the cracks in his façade became ever clearer. Even when surrounded by his adopted family back on the island, and the friends he made there, he was alone.
He begged and pleaded Raiden for every chance to go through the portal to another world, hoping to find what he was looking for. Whatever he could find that might fill the void that he didn't know how to. It may never be filled, but it seemed the joy he found here among his new friends mitigated that longing for something more. From the expression on his face, Selene noticed him falling into that same hole loneliness and self-doubt she saw him fall into many times before. In a rare moment of compassion, Selene jumped to his shoulders and rubbed herself against his head, getting Spencer to smile and scratch her ears.
"Thanks Selene, you always know what to say…or I guess not say. Having a shape-shifting magical beast for a mom isn't so bad sometimes."
"While you are a thorn in my side, you are still my responsibility and I worry about you my lord. Go ahead and play teacher to the young boy. I can finish the mission easier on my own anyway." Selene hopped back to the window and opened one of the panels. "I will return every three or four days to exchange intelligence. In the same blue flash, Selene took the form of a black horned owl with blue eyes. Before she took flight, Spencer gently nudged her back to get her attention.
"Hey Selene, thanks. For this, and for everything, really." Spencer held an honest smile, Selene wasn't this nice often; he knew that more than anyone.
"Please, don't assume I'm growing soft on you my lord. I just want this mission done so we can return home." She spread her wings stretching for the flight ahead. Spencer walked away to join Finn and Jake outside before being stopped by Selene. "But…" Spencer turned around to Selene still facing the window. "Don't even think my absence means you can slack off and not continue your training." She slowly turned her head 180 degrees to lock eyes with him. "If I were to find out this were the case, you might find a rather poisonous creature waiting for you under the bed." Her owlish eyes dilated to accentuate her rather aggressive point.
"Uh, of course! Yes Ma'am!" Spencer's now sweaty hand shot up into a salute in a way that shows he's been "encouraged" like this before. After a long silence passed, Selene turned back around and with a huff, took flight toward the Flame Kingdom. Unbeknownst to Spencer, Selene gave a slight smile as she left; as best as an owl could smile anyway. Spencer's hand fell comfortably back at his side as he chuckled with a smirk.
'Heh, crazy cat. What am I going to do with her?'
Outside, Finn and Jake were finishing up their second round of sparring and took a short water break. While both were still fired up, Finn seemed especially excited for Spencer to join them so he could witness again firsthand what he was capable of.
"Wonder what's taking him so long? I really want to get this whole training shebang started." Finn said stretching his arms out.
"Yeah good luck with that bud, I'm done for the day. I'll be glad to watch if it's especially cruel though." Jake chuckled from his position cloud watching.
"Pff, I mean yeah I'm sure his training was intense but I'm sure it can't be that bad."
As if on cue for maximum comedic effect, Spencer kicked the door open in his full gear holding his weapon in bow form.
"ALRIGHT FINNY BOY TIME TO WHIP YOU INTO SHAPE!"
Finn, feeling a little big in his britches, replied with what he thought was an amazing quip.
"Can it be a circle? That's always been my favorite shape." Finn shared a laugh with Jake before turning back to Spencer.
"Now is not the time for puns, but I will make a note to give you credit later." Spencer said as he pointed at Finn with one of the tips of the bow. "Now, let's get things started with a five-mile evasive run with 250 fire fists and 100 hot squats after every mile." He said while rolling out his right shoulder.
"…what do you mean evasive run? Spencer?" His response was a low-power lighting arrow that took one of the ears off his hat. The pure look of confusion and terror was definitely frame-worthy.
"WARNING SHOT! I SUGGEST SETTING A GOOD PACE!" Spencer yelled with the visage of an elated madman.
Finn's current pace seemed to be just fast enough, as a constant barrage of arrows at his feet and never farther than a foot away from his person sure kept him going.
"I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT A FREAKING FIRE FIST IS!"
"YOU BETTER FIGURE OUT! AS YOU KNOW, I HAVE VERY GOOD AIM!"
'Oh yeah, this is definitely going to occupy the rest of my day.' Jake nodded contently from his comfortable spot on the ground.
Well there we go kiddies, hope you enjoyed the chapter and I hope to keep this going so until next time!
