Hey folks, so originally I wasn't planning on updating this soon because I am swamped with school and finals, but I wanted to explain the last chapter a little more since it seemed to have caused some confusion. I wanted a baby name for one of the twins to be as close to Emma's name as I could get without naming the child 'Emma' flat out. Technically, speaking the root name of Emily is Amelia, but Emily is as close to Emma as I could get and I like what the name Emily means so I went with it. Hope this clears things up.
Right after Halloween was over, Emma went to work on fixing one of the extra rooms upstairs and turning it into the nursery for the twins. They had been using it as a spare bedroom before now; meaning Henry suddenly got upgraded to a queen size bed in an effort not to throw away an almost new mattress. With the furniture out of the room and plastic down on the floor to protect the rug, Emma went and picked up the paint she would need and all the supplies before heading back to the house. When she arrived her parent's car was parked out front and when she walked into the house with her arms full of paint and brushes she was met by her father taking half of what she was carrying into his own arms.
"Need some help?"
"Regina still thinks I'm going to destroy the house so she called you?"
"Destroy the house no. Get paint on the new carpet, yes. Look, if Henry and I both help you'll be done with the paint job faster and can move on to other decoration stuff."
"Alright, you can help, but it's a secret, so no letting Regina peek." Her father nodded his understanding and helped Emma take the supplies upstairs. Before they began actually began pouring the paint, Emma went in search of her wife and found her where she always was on the days she wasn't in the office, in her home office working on paperwork or typing away on her computer.
"You are supposed to be resting, you know that right?" Regina looked up and smiled.
"I'm sitting down in a comfortable chair and I have my feet in that foot massage tub you and Henry bought me for my birthday last year. I think this qualifies as rest." Emma shook her head and went over to the desk and looked at what Regina was working on.
"Damn it Regina, you said you'd stop working on the tax forms. It's November for crying out loud, taxes don't happen until early next year." Regina took the form back from Emma and continued to fill it out.
"I know that darling, but I thought it best to fill out the forms as much as I can before I can't work anymore, that way while I'm on maternity leave the town doesn't get audited. With these forms half done all your parents and the other members of the team I've assembled will have to do is fill in the numbers and I was smart enough to include a detailed chart of where they could find those numbers." Regina held up the chart like Henry holds up his math tests after he gets a passing grade and Emma had to smile at her wife's overenthusiasm.
"It's a very nice chart Regina, but please call it a day soon. You were working when I left the house this morning and you need to actually rest, now more than ever."
"As soon as I finish this form I'm done and I will stop for the day." Emma nodded her head, quickly kissed Regina and started to leave the room.
"And you'll take a personal day off from work tomorrow to catch up on your rest." Emma shut the door before Regina could refuse and Emma went back upstairs with a satisfied grin plastered across her face. They worked on painting the walls and ceiling for the next two hours. After two coats of paint, they were finally done and by some miracle they weren't totally covered in paint. Emma had some on her face and arms, but only because Henry thought it would be funny to flick the paint at his mother as she finished the frame around the window.
"Not bad for a days work guys. Regina will flip when she sees it." David looked around and had to admit the color looked nice. They had opted for a soft purple on the walls with a deep plum purple for the trim. True to her word, there was no pink in the room at all and Emma thought her wife would appreciate the color of the nursery being one she was particularly fond of. They had started to clean up the brushes and the plastic when Emma heard Regina calling for her from downstairs.
"I should go see what she needs. Lately it's been hard for her to stand up without help because of the bump." Emma made her way downstairs and sauntered into the den.
"Having trouble getting up again babe?" Emma finally looked up and studied Regina's face that was much paler than before.
"Something's wrong." The way Regina said it was enough to make Emma's heart stop and she quickly flew to Regina's side.
"Does something hurt, what are you feeling?" Emma rested her hand on Regina's bump and her other hand brushed the hair away from Regina's eyes.
"It's not pain, but something isn't right." Regina started crying and Emma looked around for a moment in a panic before standing up, going to the door and yelling as loud as she could for her father to get downstairs now. She heard rapid footsteps and when her father arrived downstairs he was met with his daughter's panicked expression."
"What's wrong?" David walked into the office and saw Regina sitting in her chair looking like she was about to pass out at any given moment. He grabbed his key from his jeans pocket and threw the to Emma.
"Grab henry, go fire up my car and open the door to the backseat."
"What's happening?" Emma was confused and more scared than when Regina had fainted all those months before.
"Emma, I don't know, but she's about ready to pass out and that is not good for her or the girls, now go." Emma hesitated, but ran into the living room already yelling for Henry to grab his coat and get in the car. David grabbed the blanket off the couch in the office a wrapped it around Regina.
"Regina, look at me." Regina forced herself to look David in the eye even though her grasp on consciousness was fading rapidly.
"I'm going to pick you up and get you in the car ok? I need you to try and stay awake as long as you can." If Regina had been alert at all she would have fought the idea of being carried anywhere, but she was scared and didn't understand what was going on and David was the only one strong enough to carry a heavily pregnant woman any great distance. She nodded her understanding and David wasted no time in picking her up and carrying her bridal style through the lower level of the house an into the bitter cold that awaited them outside. Henry was in the front of the car with a worried look on his face and Emma was in the back seat with similar look etched across her own face. David carefully placed Regina in the car and Emma pulled her close to her. David threw the car in drive and took off speeding down the street.
"What wrong with mom?" Henry asked as he watched his other mother try in vain to get Regina to stay awake.
"Not sure buddy, but she's about to pass out and when that happens the closer we are to the hospital the better." David glanced in the rear view mirror and saw Emma trying everything she could to get Regina to keep her eyes open.
"Gina, baby you need to stay with me ok, we're almost to the hospital, but I need you to stay awake, please." Regina blinked, trying to fight off unconsciousness and she smiled a weak smile at her wife. "Love you."
"No, Regina, we don't need to do I love you's because you are gonna be fine ok. Just stay with me." No sooner had she said it, than Regina's body went totally limp in Emma's arms.
"Drive faster." Emma all but barked at her father. Henry seemed the most surprised; usually Emma was calm under pressure, but clearly those days were over.
"Emma if I drive any faster we will crash. Just hold onto her, I can see the entrance of the hospital from here." David slowed the car down just enough to make the turn without turning the car on two wheels and then immediately slammed on the brakes in front of the ER entrance. David threw open the backseat and grabbed Regina before heading into the ER bay, totally abandoning his car without a second thought. Seeing she one time Prince come running into the ER with the former Evil Queen in his arms was enough to stop everyone in their tracks. That was until David started yelling.
"One of you help me, get a gurney and someone call Whale." A nurse finally pushed a gurney in front of David and he gently placed Regina on the surface before turning to Emma. "Stay with her, I'll go move the car and be right back." David took Henry with him to move the car, knowing he wouldn't be allowed to go wherever it was that they were taking Regina.
"Call your grandma and tell her I'm gonna have Ruby come get her from the apartment." Henry grabbed his grandfather's phone and did as he was told and on the way back to the ER David called Ruby and told her to situation. David asked the nurse that had helped them before where they had taken Regina and she said they were still examining her in the ER and they could wait for more news in the waiting room. David hated to leave Emma alone, but he knew that there was literally nothing her could do to help other than sit and wait for the doctors to help Regina. So he did the only thing he could do, which was take a seat next to his grandson and wait.
I'm a terrible person for leaving it there aren't I? I should be able to update this next week, once my finals are over and I'm done with work. Reviews are always nice and hopefully you all enjoyed this, even though its a bit more angst than fluff.
