Ok, so roll with me on this chapter because it may not be exactly what you all want, but….if I have learned anything from Game of Thrones it's that we don't always get the things we want. No worries though, I'm not killing anyone like GoT. Hopefully you all still enjoy.
For two hours Henry had failed to be able to reach Emma and deep down he knew that she was doing something, probably something stupid, to get home. He didn't mention any of this to his mother of course because, well, Regina was a bit busy at the moment. Henry stood outside pacing the hallway like an anxious husband waiting for his wife to give birth. Apollo stood outside the bathroom door, wanting inside, but David didn't want the dog getting in the way so Apollo was left to sit and whine at the closed door. Eventually he and Henry had both sat down in the hallway and waited. They waited for Emma to come home. They waited to hear David to shout another order at Regina. They waited for Regina's strained cries to calm down. They waited for a lot of things in those two hours.
Inside of the bathroom David was trying to do the work of three men and in his defense he was doing a good job. Regina was panting, trying to breathe properly, but the pain became worse each time it hit her and when she couldn't do anything more than cry David knew he had to do something.
"Regina! Regina, listen to me." Regina took a deep breath and with her jaw clenched tight she made eye contact with David. "I know this isn't what you wanted, or what you dreamed of. If I know Emma she disobeyed me and is her way home, but this baby wants out Regina so I need you to stop fighting that."
"I…want…my….wife." Was the best the Regina could gasp out between breaths.
David nodded and smiled a nervous smile, "I want her here too Regina, but if she cannot get here, you need to trust me."
"They're early. What if…something is wrong." Regina snapped her eyes shut as another contraction hit. David waited until she opened her eyes again.
"Regina, I swear, on my life, these babies are going to be just fine. I won't let ANYTHING happen to them. I've done this before Regina and the girls are going to be perfect." Regina looked at the man at her feet who had tears in eyes that mirrored her own.
"I'm sorry, about you and Emma." David reached over and grabbed Regina's shoulders. "Regina, let it go. If that day hadn't happened, none of us would have Henry, you and Emma would have NEVER met and these babies would not be making the most dramatic entrance in the history of this family. Just trust me, let me help and it will more than make up for that day. These babies aren't going anywhere." Regina paused and then nodded, allowing David to move back to her feet. He checked her again and shook his head swearing.
"Regina, I hate to do this to you, but she's crowning, you have to push." David turned and yelled for Henry who came in, but had his back to this mother.
"Grab the shoe laces and throw them in that bowl of rubbing alcohol." Henry did as he was told and put the bowl next to the tub along with some scissors that were also soaking in the liquid. Henry looked over his shoulder and smiled at his mother, hoping it was enough to support her and she returned a tearful one of her own before he left the room. David grabbed one of the flashlights that could sustain being underwater and he reached below the water line, trying to find the best way to do this.
"Regina, next contraction you push hard as you can ok." Regina nodded and they didn't have to wait long for that moment to come and soon Regina had her chin pressed to her chest as she pushed. The book had told them to have Regina push for one count of ten and then rest. David was in sensory overload; with the continually running water in the tub, Regina making all manner of sounds and his own racing thoughts. Regina had found a steady rhythm of pushing and then resting before the next contraction hit. After what seemed like forever David finally felt the babies head come completely free.
"Come on Regina, really big push and get her shoulders out and you'll have your baby." That was all Regina needed to hear before leaning forward and pushing hard, not caring about counting to 10; this baby was coming out on this push so help her gods. David carefully maneuvered the baby's shoulders free and before he could really be prepared for it he was forced to catch his granddaughter as the rest of her body effortlessly slid out of her mother. David lifted the baby out of the water and quickly worked to clear her nasal passages and mouth so that she could cry. There was a moment of silence in the room where both Regina and David were too terrified to speak: the baby was small, but appeared to be alright so why was she not crying. That moment of silence seemed to last forever, but was shattered seconds later by a piercing scream from the infant David was clutching to his chest. The relieved sigh came out with tears as David handed his granddaughter to Regina while he quickly tied off her cord and cut through it, just as the manual had instructed he do. Regina was cooing and crying over the child in her arms and the pain still ripping through her reminded her that there was still work to be done.
"Mommy loves you, but I have to make sure your sister joins us." She kissed the crying child and David quickly wrapped the baby in a towel and yelled for Henry because he couldn't deliver this second baby with one hand. Henry walked in the door and was frozen in place as he saw the bundle in David's arms.
"Wow." That was all the teenager could muster.
"Henry!" He snapped back to reality and took his sister from his grandfather's arms. "Take her upstairs and very carefully clean her up a bit more, put a diaper on her and wrap her in the blanket Granny made, then come straight back down here and sit near the fire. Just keep her warm." Henry nodded and left the room still looking at his sister with wide eyes because this whole situation was more than any of them could have thought up. Apollo followed Henry upstairs where the teenager cleaned up his sister before getting her into a diaper and swaddling her in a blanket. When Henry got back downstairs he walked around the living room humming to the baby in his arms who was fussing softly. Apollo was following him with every step he took, that is until they both heard a noise outside, only to have Emma fall through the front door seconds later. Henry watched his mother stand up slowly and rip off two of her jackets and scarves. When Emma finally looked up to see her son holding a baby her eyes grew wide in panic.
"There's still one more. Grandpa is in the bathroom with Mom." Emma seemed still shocked at the sight of her son holding his sister and finally Henry spoke up. "Mom, I've got her, go!" Emma nodded and ran into the bedroom before unceremoniously bursting in the bathroom door.
"You and your children have impeccable timing." Regina yelled at Emma through gritted teeth. Emma quickly went and kneeled beside the tub, offering Regina her hand. The brunette immediately took Emma's hand in a death grip.
"I'm sorry Regina, if I had any idea I would have stayed home today." Emma pushed Regina's bangs that were wet with sweat away from her face and leaned her forehead against her wife's.
"Well you showed up just in time to meet baby number 2. Regina another big push for me ok." Emma was shocked that her father was so calm in the middle of this whole situation, but she was thankful for it.
"I can't, I'm too tired." Emma squeezed Regina's hand and smiled. "Yes you can Regina. I know you're tired and baby believe me I know it hurts, but that beautiful baby Henry is holding really wants to have her sister and you are kind of the only one who can make that happen. I'm right here now, I've got you, but you have to push." Emma put her hand behind Regina's back and helped support her wife's weight as Regina pushed for as long as she could before collapsing against Emma's arms.
"That was good Regina. Couple more pushes and we'll be done. Come on Regina." David knew that the second baby should come quickly because the first baby more or less makes room for the second delivery to be easier. But Regina was tired and really didn't have much left in her to give. Emma caught her father's gaze and silently pleaded with him to do something. David could only think of one thing that could make Regina perk up.
"You know what Regina, you're right. I mean Snow delivered Emma during your curse, but you delivering children in a blizzard and black out, that's too much for you, I get it." Emma was shocked David lived to see the end of that sentence. Comparing Snow to Regina was never a good idea, but in this moment it was suicide, or so Emma thought. Regina got this stone cold face on before pulling David toward her by the collar of his shirt.
"You think your wife could do this. Your precious princess could barely handle one baby. Now get back down there and help me." David made sure not to smile to Regina's face, but inside he was very proud of himself. Regina leaned against Emma and once again pushed with no regard for counting the seconds that passed. She only had one more push left in her and this was it. Regina's scream of pain soon faded away and in it's place was baby's frantic cries. David held up the screaming infant, giving both mothers a good look at the baby before laying her on Regina's chest. He again tied off the cord, this time letting Emma cut the cord. Thankfully Regina's body delivered the afterbirth with no effort on her part needed and David carefully placed it in a plastic bag, knowing that however gross it was, Whale was going to need to examine it later. When he finally looked up, the sight he saw was the stuff you see in movies. A new mother nuzzling her newborn, only this time this baby was being showered with love from two mommies. David drained the tub, but offered to refill it to let Regina clean up before they tried to get her out of the tub.
Regina handed the baby to Emma who wrapped her in a towel and held her daughter close to her body. David stepped out of the tub, finally realizing his pants and most of his shirt were soaking wet. Emma led him into the bedroom and found him a pair of sweatpants and a long sleeve shirt that had been left there when they had painted the nursery.
"If you want I'll take her while you go help Regina." David held out his arms to Emma and the blonde looked at her daughter and hesitated, not wanting to let the child go.
"Emma, I promise she'll be perfectly safe with me. I'll go get her wrapped up and Henry and I will be waiting here when Regina is ready to lie down and snuggle with them both." Emma sighed, kissed her daughter's head and handed the infant over to her father who seemed more than happy to be holding the child. Emma disappeared into the bathroom to help Regina and David went in search of Henry. He found him still in the living room, still walking back and forth with his sister who seemed to be asleep now. Henry looked up and smiled.
"Mom ok?"
"She's tired, but she's fine. I'm gonna go get this little one dressed and I'll be right back." David went upstairs and did what Henry had done not long ago. Once the baby was dressed and wrapped up David returned to the living room. As he stepped into the room the lights of the house finally started to flicker back on until they were back totally.
"Of course, after all that, the lights come back on AFTER they are born." David looked down at the baby in his arms and rubbed her nose lightly. "You and your sister are just like your mommy, you like to make an entrance." David shifted the baby so she was resting in his left arm and gestured for Henry to hand over the baby in his arms.
"Give me your sister and go call your grandmother. Tell her everyone is fine, but when the roads are clear have her come up here ok." Henry carefully handed the child to his grandfather and left to go call Snow. David slowly walked back to the bedroom, with Apollo at his side. He sat in the armchair in the corner of the room and waited for Emma and Regina to come out of the bathroom. Roughly 10 minutes later both babies were sleeping and so was David, so when Emma came out of the bathroom she couldn't help but take a picture of her father holding both her daughters and all three of them slept. She grabbed some clean clothes for Regina and while Regina slowly dressed Emma changed the bedding. With Emma helping her to slowly walk to the bed, Regina managed to make herself comfortable and as much as neither of them wanted to wake David, they wanted to hold their babies. Emma tapped her father lightly on the knee, which woke him up with a bit of a startle.
"It's ok, you fell asleep and I would like to hold my children." David smiled and handed one baby to Emma and followed her to the bed, handing the second child to Regina who still seemed exhausted, but lit up like a Christmas tree the second David handed her the baby. Emma snuggled close to Regina so they held both babies between them.
"They are a little on the small side, but twins usually are. Other than that, you are both perfect, yes you are." Emma cooed as she kissed both babies and Regina couldn't hide the smile or the tears. Her emotions would have to wait because both babies started to fuss. Regina adjusted the child in her arms to that she could breastfeed her and then her sister. David left the room to give her privacy, closing the door behind him. As Emma tried to soothe the child still in her arms waiting to be feed she looked over at Regina.
"You know I love you so much right?" Regina smiled, "I had a feeling."
"They need names." Emma pointed out as they switched babies and the second infant latched onto Regina's breast.
"Well, we had agreed on Emily and I think that fits her best." Regina nodded to the baby Emma was burping.
"What do you think munchkin, hmm, you like the name Emily?" The child gurgled and Emma laughed.
"I guess she agrees. Now, what about Ms. I couldn't wait 20 more minutes for momma to get home to be born?" Emma was of course referring to the baby that Regina was currently feeding and Regina had to laugh.
"I know we talked about names for her, but with everything that happened I was hoping we could discuss a different name for her." Emma leaned against the pillows with Emily snuggled into her chest. "I'm all ears babe."
I'm a terrible person for leaving it there aren't I? Well, WE HAVE BABIES and they are ok and Emma sort of made it in time. Anyway, next chapter they both get full names and everyone gets real bonding time with the babies. It was too chaotic to have them truly bond with the babies in the chapter, but I hope what I put in there was enough.
