Scene 19
Interior JFK Airport. (2015)
(Marie is nervous)
Marie: I can't believe I'm in New York!
Shawn: Marie I want you to know no matter what happens with Katy I'm glad I went to meet you, and that you're here now. (Shawn gives Marie a side hug.)
Shawn continued: Marie you mind going to find our luggage while I make a few phone calls?
Marie: No problem reminds me what your bag looks like again?
Shawn: it's black with red zippers and a camera sticker on the side.
Marie: You know for someone who travels a lot your suitcase still looks like one for little kids.
Shawn: excuse me for wanting something practical that wouldn't get stolen. (Marie giggles.)
Marie: alright I'll go get the bags.
Shawn: Okay make sure to meet me here by the escalator when you've got them.
(Shawn Dials a number.)
Topanga: Hi Shawn what happened with Angela?
Shawn: Why didn't you tell me she was so bad off?
Topanga: What are you talking about Shawn I mean I know she was upset after Mark died, but that was five years ago she should be fine now.
Shawn: Well she's not fine she's an alcoholic with a brain tumor and a form of bipolar disorder.
Topanga: Oh, my G-d she has a brain tumor?
Shawn: The Doctors just found out.
Topanga: I honestly had no idea Shawn the last time I saw her in person was at Mark's funeral, and I had no idea about the drinking problem.
Shawn: You promise you didn't know anything?
Topanga: Of course, not I wouldn't keep something like that from Cory or you.
Shawn: I just don't know if I can trust you after you lied about Marie.
Topanga: I understand Shawn. I just never thought telling you was my place.
Shawn: well it's a little late for that now. I was calling to see if you'd write up a custody agreement for me.
Topanga: You want custody of Marie?
Shawn: I honestly couldn't leave her with Angela. Not in the state she's in. She almost broke Marie's wrist in a drunken rage.
Topanga: I'm so sorry Shawn, but getting custody takes a while, and I'm not sure your even listed you as the father on Marie's birth certificate.
Shawn: What! I can't take this she is my daughter I should be allowed to be her father especially when she needs me like she does now.
(Marie walks over with three large suit cases and one small black one.)
Marie: I got the luggage dad.
Topanga: You took her back to New York with you? Are you insane. You know that's called kidnapping even if she is yours's.
Shawn: Relax Topanga Landon told me to take her. Its not like I stole her away in the middle of the night.
Topanga: So, they're on board with your having custody of her?
Shawn: Landon is, but I don't know about Angela she's all over the place. I honestly feel bad for her husband having lost his son and now probably his wife. It's not fair on the poor guy.
Topanga: Yeah, he really is a nice guy and a great dad to Marie. I mean I know you're her father Shawn, but he was good to her like you are to Maya.
Shawn: Look Topanga having Custody of Marie is important to me, and it's not like I want to hurt Landon or Angela, but it's honestly what's best for her, and I think Angela's doctors would agree.
Topanga: I'll see what I can do. How is Katy handling things?
Shawn: I don't know yet but she and Maya should be here to pick us up from the airport any minute, so I better go.
Topanga: ok Shawn why don't you all come over for dinner tonight I know Cory and Riley would love to meet Marie.
Shawn: That's sounds nice I'll just have to check with Katy and see how long it takes Marie to get settled in.
Topanga: Ok just let me know before 6
(buzz)
Shawn: That was Katy gotta go.
(Shawn hangs up the Phone and turns to Marie.)
Shawn: Marie Katy is waiting for us outside.
Marie: Are you sure about this Shawn what if she doesn't like me?
Shawn: You're my daughter I'm sure she'll love you.
Scene 20
Int. Car New York
Katy: So you must be Marie. My, aren't you pretty darlin This is my little girl Maya.
Maya: I'm perfectly capable of introducing myself mom. Hi I'm glad your back Shawn.
Shawn: I'm glad to be back I mean London is nice and all but it doesn't feel right when I don't have all my girls with me.
Katy: Aww you sweet talker you.
(Katy punches Shawn playfully but looks mad.)
Shawn: Oh, Topanga asked if we could come over for dinner tonight.
Katy: She did? And you felt the need to tell me about that but not a need to mention you were bringing your daughter back from Europe to live with us!?
Shawn: It's not like you didn't know that was a possibility and besides that's not exactly something you tell someone over the phone.
Katy: So, you thought her showing up unannounced was better?
(Marie starts crying in the back seat.)
Marie: I knew she was going to hate me.
(Marie continues crying.)
Katy: Oh sweetie I don't hate you. This has nothin' to do with you I just was surprised is all and thought your daddy here could've been more considerate by letting me know you were coming home with him is all.
Maya: So Shawn are you all staying in the city with us or going to your cabin upstate?
Shawn: Oh I sold the cabin a few months ago.
Katy: I noticed you staying over more, but you never told me you sold your place.
Shawn: It just didn't make sense to keep it with how little I was out there.
Katy: So, you just moved in with me without my even realizing it?
Shawn: Yes, but I did that, so I could save up.
Katy: Save up for what?
Shawn: Drive to Cory and Topanga's building.
Katy: Well alright then nobody tell me a darn thing. Did you know he sold the cabin Maya?
Maya: No but I sort of figured he hadn't mentioned the place for the last six moths and he's taken over half your closet.
(Car Parks in front of a 6-story apartment complex.)
Katy: Now does somebody want to explain what in tarnation we're doing here cause I know Topanga doesn't have dinner till 6:30.
(Shawn opens the car door to get out.)
Shawn: we're not going to Cory's place.
Katy: Then why are we here.
Shawn: Because we're going home.
(Katy gets out of the car with the girls)
Katy: Are you saying what I think you're saying?
(Maya and Marie go to grab the bags from the Trunk.)
Shawn: Girl's leave the luggage will come back out to get it after I show your mom the new apartment.
(Katy looks stunned and follows Shawn up to the fourth floor along with the girls)
Scene 21
Inside Shawn's Apartment.
Katy: It looks identical to Cory and Topanga's place.
Shawn: Well maybe the layout is but the inside we can do anything we want with. In fact, do you want to see Maya's room?
(Shawn leads everyone to a room identical to Riley's, but the back wall is black and there is a white cushion head board there are three guitars hanging on the wall and there are twinkle lights hanging across the ceiling.)
Maya: Why black?
Shawn: it's chalk paint for your art work.
(There is hot pink cushion on a black bay window and white drapes. Two old concert posters hang on either side of a white book case on the one side of the bathroom door and on the other side is a dresser with some of Maya's artwork hanging over it her record player sits on top of her dresser on the bathroom door hangs a full-length mirror. There is an oval shaped pink fuzzy area rug on the wood floor at the foot of her bed and black and white bedding with pink throw pillows.)
(Maya starts crying)
Maya: the room is perfect Shawn how did you do this?
Shawn: I had a little help
(Rile climbs through Maya's bay window)
Riley: Hi peaches.
Maya: I can't believe you did this I mean I knew Shawn got the apartment but all this. You guys.
(Maya starts tearing up)
Maya: I'm not crying you are
Shawn: We love you too Maya.
Katy: I just still can't get over this. How did everyone know that I was moving except me?
Shawn: Come on Katy I know your lease runs out at the end of next month and you're always saying how great Topanga's place is so when one of the apartments in this building came up for rent I had to get it. Besides this works out prefect because it's a three bedroom so I can turn what I thought would be our guest room into Marie's room.
Katy: Part of me loves all this Shawn, but part of me is livid that you did all of this without telling me!
Shawn: I just wanted to surprise you I was going to show you the place after we announced our engagement last week at Core's place, but we're here now and I thought you'd be happy.
Katy: I love the place I do it's just a lot to take in all at once you know?
Shawn: Riley Maya can take my credit card it has a $5,000 limit but try to stay under $1,000 and take Marie shopping to decorate her room.
Riley: Ok sounds fun
Maya: Is everything ok with you and Shawn mom?
Katy: Yeah sweetie I just think the two of us need some alone time to talk about thing.
Maya: Ok but you better not screw things up because I love my new room and am going to stay here with or without you.
Katy: Maya how dare you say that to me I'm still your mother.
Maya: Yeah and as my mother you should have seen that coming from a mile away.
Riley: Come on Maya let them have some alone time
Marie: Look Katy I know my coming here was a bit of a shock, but this all has been a whirl wind for me to a new dad a new country a new home. So please don't be angry with Shawn its not his fault he just found out about me or his fault that I'm here now.
Katy: Oh, sweetie please don't think that I'm mad that you're here I'm sure you're a lovely girl and I look forward to getting to know you while you're here. Now go down to the lobby the girls are waiting to take you shopping.
Marie: thanks for the spending money dad.
Shawn: You're welcome make sure to be back here by 6 so we can go to dinner at the Mathew's place.
Marie: Mathews?
Shawn: right, I mean Corey and Topanga's place.
Marie: Oh, them. Alright I'll make sure we get back by 6
Scene 22
EXT. Roof of Apartment building.
(Shawn and Katy sit on the roof of the building)
Shawn: I'm Sorry I should have told you I was bringing Marie back to the states with me.
Katy: Why is she here. I mean you just showed up told her you're her father and both her and her parents wanted you to take her half way around the world?
Shawn: Angela is dying she has a slow growing brain tumor but its been there for a long time and she's starting to lose her mind.
Katy: Why didn't you tell me that?
Shawn: I didn't know she was sick till yesterday and everything happened so fast.
(Shawn starts tearing up.)
Shawn: I haven't had romantic feelings for Angela for a long time, but I still couldn't handle seeing her like that. I held it together in front of Marie, but I was terrified.
(Katy hugs Shawn.)
Katy: What happened to make you bring Marie here?
Shawn: Angela is married to a really nice guy named Landon she has been for the past fourteen years well eight years ago they had a son and when he was three years old he got run over by a car and killed.
Katy: That's horrible, but I don't see what that has to do with you brining Marie here.
Shawn: After her son's death Angela became an Alcoholic and when she drank she would pretend like her son was still alive and go into fits of rage when someone told her otherwise. Landon tried to get her help and she seemed better for a while, but then she started to get worse again and no one knew why till they found the brain tumor.
Katy: That's horrible so she just told you to take Marie?
Shawn: Not exactly. Landon did and when Marie went to say good bey to her Angela couldn't even remember her name.
Katy: Now I feel like the wicked witch of the west. Making that poor girl cry.
(Katy punches Shawn.)
Shawn: what was that for?
Katy: Not telling me today could've gone so much better if I had known what was going on.
Shawn: So, are you really mad at me for getting us this apartment?
(Katy kisses Shawn.)
Shawn: So I'll take that as a no?
Katy: I'm mad, but not about the apartment, but about the fact you didn't ask me. I just was looking forward to us finding a place together when we decided by getting it yourself you took my choices out of the picture.
Shawn: I just knew how much we both liked this place and with how few units there are it's rare one comes up on the market, so I bought it the day it went on the market. Honestly had I taken the time to call you and set up a showing, and then have us decide I don't think it still would have been on the market I wasn't even the first offer they received, and it was the day they listed it.
Katy: I understand I'm disappointed I didn't get to help you pick it out, but I get it.
(Katy Kisses Shawn again)
Shawn: Now what was that for?
Katy: Taking care of your family. You're a good man Shawn Hunter.
Shawn: So, will you move here with me and still marry me?
Katy: Yes, and that's not just because Maya would kill me if I said no.
Shawn: Would you mind if your step-daughter Marie lived with us?
Katy: Now that's a silly question. You honestly think after all you've done for Maya I could stand here and tell you to send your daughter away?
Shawn: Well I.. Um
Katy: Exactly. Now let's see if the girls are home yet.
