Scene 28
INT. Maya's bedroom
(Riley wakes up and rolls over to find Marie next to her.)
Riley: Maya!
(Maya comes into her room clearly still not awake yet.)
Maya: what is it Riles?
Riley: For one I'm sleeping with a stranger.
Maya: Come on you met Marie yesterday
Riley: I know that, but it doesn't mean I want to share a bed with her.
Maya: Sorry she was tried like I am now can I please go back to bed?
Riley: No. It's 10am Honestly, I'm surprised I'm the only one awake right now.
Maya: Well unlike you the rest of us were up till 3 putting together Marie's room
Riley: Oh, come on Maya. You know I can't make it past midnight.
Maya: That's why I let you sleep in my room and didn't rudely wake you.
Riley: Oh, you woke me alright when you snuck up the fire escape to what I can only guess was my room.
Maya: shh! Marie is sleeping right there.
(points to the bed.)
Riley: It's fine she looks sound asleep.
Maya: No, she's not (Maya raises her voice.) are you Marie?
Marie: How did you know I was awake?
Maya: That's exactly how Shawn looks when he pretends to sleep on the couch when I come in after curfew.
Marie: Blimey (My goodness) I'm a tad More like Shawn then I thought. Well where'd you sneak off to last night?
Maya: And why should I tell you?
Marie: Because if you don't I could always get Shawn to ask.
Riley: Remember when you asked why I said you were lucky to be an only child Maya? This is why.
Maya: Fine I'll tell you, but you've got to promise not to tell Shawn or the other adults.
Marie: if no one's dead you've got my word.
Maya: of course, no one's dead what kind of girl do you think I am?
Marie: I don't know I've known you a day and you snuck out after midnight. I don't know what you do?
Maya: don't worry the worst thing I've done is some graffiti art nothing major.
Riley: I wouldn't call a misdemeanor nothing major.
Maya: That's cause you're a goody two shoes.
Riley: Hey!
Maya: you know it's true.
Riley: Yeeah.
Maya: so you want to know what I did last night?
Riley: You better not have done anything stupid, because if you get in trouble I'll get in trouble for letting you get in trouble.
Maya: Like you could stop me from doing anything.
Riley: why do you always act like I'm helpless.
Maya: because you almost died bobbing for apples at a Halloween party.
(Marie is laughing)
Marie: you two really are good mates, aren't you?
Riley: the best thunder
Maya: Lightning
(Riley Hugs Maya and they sit down together in Maya's bay window.)
Maya: You know what I just realized Riley? This is our first bay window talk in my new bay window.
Marie: what's with the thunder and lightning and what's a bay window talk? is that another American thing I don't know about?
Maya: Nah their just me and Riley things. Bay-window talks are where Riley and I discuss the important things going on in our lives.
Riley: Or the lives of our friends. Now Marie if you're going to stay you need to sit in the bay window with us.
(Marie moves from the bed to the bay window.)
Marie: I think we waited long enough spill already.
Maya: Josh and I kissed yesterday twice.
Riley: eek!
Marie: You kissed that's not that big a deal.
Riley: It is if that's your first kiss.
Marie: That was your first kiss? Why'd you kiss him in Ikea like that?
Maya: I got jealous that you were flirting with him.
Marie: I was so not flirting with him.
Maya: I don't know what you think flirting is because you totally were.
Marie: I have a boyfriend an amazing boyfriend might I add. Back in London.
(Marie looks longingly out the window with a sad expression.)
Riley: What's your boyfriend like?
Marie : He's smart and funny , and we've been friends for probably five years now.
Maya: That's nice me now.
Riley: Don't be rude Maya.
Marie: His name is Nick we've been dating for two years now. He's always helping me with my school work and writing me romantic poems.
Riley: he sounds great do you have any friends like Maya and I?
Marie: Not that close I have cheerleading friends and a few friends from the coffee shop where I work, but no one I'm super close to not like you guys. Nick has a best mate though George the two of them do nearly everything together. I had to tell Nick to quit inviting George on dates with us that it was getting a bit weird.
(Riley and Marie are laughing.)
Riley: sounds just like my dad and Shawn.
Marie: I can't believe I just left like that. I didn't even get a chance to say goodbye.
Maya: How come I'm sure Shawn would have taken you to see them had you asked.
Marie: I think with the shock of my mum's diagnoses I really just wanted to be alone.
Riley: What's wrong with her anyway if you don't mind me asking.
Marie: She has a brain tumor and is losing her memories.
Maya: I'm so sorry
(Maya hugs Marie.)
Riley: If there's anything we can do to help make your stay here a little easier let us know.
Marie: You already have. Now enough about me I believe Maya had something to say.
Maya: Uh yeah, Shawn mentioned Josh having some dark past and it got me imagining terrible things, so I couldn't sleep. So, I decided to sneak up the fire escape into Riley's room where he was staying.
Riley: And what did you find out?
Maya: His best friend died his junior year of highschool and that's why he skipped his senior year to come to New York. He just couldn't take the thought of going back there without him.
Riley: I remember Jason it was terrible for Josh when he died. Although he seemed more like an emotionless robot then a mush fest like my dad.
Maya: People handle grief differently Riles.
Riley: I know, but what does that have to do with Josh being a bad guy?
Maya: He got Jason Drunk that night he died in the car wreck. He blames himself for his best friends death.
Marie: Why would Shawn bring up a horrible thing like that.
Maya: I don't think he meant to I think all Shawn was talking about was how he used to prank Feeny mercilessly and was a pretty good liar.
Riley: That makes more sense. I guess it never occurred to me just how much he's changed since moving here.
Maya: Sometimes starting over is good for people. I mean just look at Huckleberry.
Riley: Leave Lucas out of this.
Maya: Have you two even kissed yet?
Riley: Once
Maya: One you two have been dating for six months! Josh and I haven't even gone out yet and we've had a full blown make out session.
(Josh taps on the window and Maya lets him in.)
Josh: Good morning gorgeous
(Josh gives Maya a peck on the lips and she blushes.)
Josh: We're you all talking about me?
Maya: And what if we we're?
(Shawn walks in Holding a frying pan full of eggs.)
Shawn: Anybody wants some… You. What are you doing in my daughter's bedroom?
Josh: Gotta go.
(Josh climbs back out the window and up the latter Riley and Marie laughs Shawn turns around to leave.)
Maya: Where are you going.
Shawn: To get Josh.
(Shawn goes to the Kitchen Riley runs after Shawn.)
Scene 29
INT. Shawn's Kitchen
Riley: Shawn look don't be mad at Josh. This is the first time I've seen him really happy since Jason died.
Shawn: What he was happy when he got into NYU.
Riley: Not this kind of happy relieved sure but not excited. He finally has some joy in his life. Don't take that away from him just because you're angry about how fast he and Maya are moving.
Shawn: Look Riley I appreciate your advice and you really are wise for a kid, but I have to set some ground rules with them I can't just let them do whatever they want.
Riley: I get that. I just want to make sure you're in a calm state of mind when you do, and don't say something you'll regret.
Shawn: What would I regret Riley?
Riley: Maybe saying that Josh was a bad kid.
Shawn: So, so was I what's the big deal?
Riley: The big deal is he still blames himself for Jason's death, and that saying stuff like that just reminds him what he did.
Shawn: But that's not what I was talking about. If anything, I meant the time he painted Feeny's fence. Besides if he was really a bad kid I wouldn't have given him my blessing to date Maya.
Riley: I know Shawn.
Shawn: Now I got to go talk to Josh.
Riley: Who's stopping you?
(Riley steps aside and Shawn goes to the apartment door then pauses.)
Shawn: Thanks kid.
Riley: Anytime uncle Shawn anytime.
(Shawn leaves the apartment.)
