Chapter 5
The Beginning of the Chariot Race
The next couple of days were rough. Percy was embarrassed about Tyson all the time, he denied their family relationship every five minutes. I do not like cyclops, but I did feel a little bad for Tyson, he was so innocent. I tried to keep Percy's mind off it by working on our chariot together.
One day Percy and I were sitting by the canoe lake sketching out different chariot designs when some Aphrodite campers came by.
"Do you need any eyeliner for your eye?" one of them asked Percy, her friends laughed at the joke. "Oh sorry, I meant eyes." she said walking away.
"Just ignore them Percy. It isn't your fault you have a monster as a brother."
"He's not my brother! He's not a monster either!" he snapped, I know I had said something wrong, but he didn't have to snap.
I raised my eyebrows, cranky much? "Hey, don't get mad at me! Technically he is a monster."
"Well you gave him permission to enter camp, not me."
"It was the only way to save your life! I mean... I am sorry Percy, I didn't expect Poseidon to claim him. Cyclops are the most deceitful, stupid..." and that's where I went too far.
"He's not! What do you have against Cyclops anyway?"
I looked down, I didn't want to look at him. I was embarrassed. You know that feeling when your face get really hot, and your ears turn red? That totally happened.
"Just forget about , the axle for this chariot." I said changing the topic.
" You're treating him like he's this horrible thing, he saved my life." Percy said, not forgetting about it.
I threw down my pencil. "Well since he is so great why don't you build a chariot with him?"
"Maybe I will!"
"Fine."
"Fine!"
I stormed off frustrated at his immaturity, even if he was so dang cute. I had tried to change the topic, to move on, but he would not move off the topic. I would just have to build a chariot with Cornelius an Apollo camper instead.
Cornelius was smart and funny (he wasn't bad looking either ;) ). When I asked him he agreed happily. We spent the next few day designing the best chariot ever, I am positive that my mother would ride in it. Cornelius had great ideas about the axle and wheels that I had never even thought of, best guy friend! He wasn't Percy though.
The day of the race snuck up fast. It was a hot and humid day, I felt like my armor was sticking to me. Fog was still close to the ground. In the trees were these strange birds were sitting in the trees. The didn't coo like normal birds, they made this strange squeaking noise. I couldn't remember what they were called.
The racetrack was in a grassy field between the archery range and the woods. The Hephaestus cabin had volunteered to make it. They had used the bronze bulls who were now tame.
All around the track there was stands for the watching the race. Tantalus, the satyrs, some dryads, and the campers that did not participate. Mr.D did not come.
"All right!" Tantalus said when everyone was there. "You all know the rules. This is a quarter-mile track, you have to go around twice to win. Two Pegasus for each chariot. Each team must consist of a fighter, and a driver. Weapons are allowed! Dirty tricks are expected! Do not kill anyone, or you will not get dessert for week! Now ready your chariots." he said smiling.
Beckendorf led his team to their chariot. Their chariot was made of bronze and iron ( even the horses!). I expected they had plenty of nasty tricks up their sleeves.
The Ares chariot had blood-red skeleton Pegasus. Clarisse hopped on with some javelins, spiked balls, and other things that would kill you before you could say Camp Half-Blood.
Apollo's cabin chariot was small and graceful and all gold. It was pulled by two Palomino Pegasus. Their fighter had a bow, though he promised not to shoot pointed arrows.
Hermes' chariot was green and old-looking. It was manned by the Stoll brothers who had millions of dirty tricks.
Percy's chariot looked like it was made out of water, it was solid through. It was a strange greenish bluish color. Percy had decided to be the driver and Tyson was the fighter. Tyson was armed with almost as much weapons as Clarisse.
Our own chariot was a gray color, for Athena. It had buttons in the front that I could press causing different things to happen, one button dropped a bunch of spiked balls, another shoot a spear around wheel level. All of our secret nasty tricks were hidden in the chariot so you could see it until it was flying at you.
Percy then walked over, interrupting my thoughts. I tried my hardest not to look at him, I was supposed to still be mad at him. He was trying to tell me about a dream that he had, had.
"You are trying to distract me!" I complained.
"What! No I am not!" he argued.
"Oh, right! Like Grover would just happen to stumble across the one thing that could save camp." I said surprising him. I had listened.
"What do you mean?"
"Go back to your chariot Percy."
Then I went back to ignoring him.
"We should talk to the Oracle." he said.
Then the conch horn sounded.
"Charioteers! To your mark!" Tantalus yelled.
"We will talk after I win." I said turning to Cornelious.
The chariots line up and the race was ready to begin.
"Get ready...Get set...Go!" Tantalus yelled ( he yells a lot).
Hooves thundered and we took the lead. A minute into the race I heard a sickening crack. I hoped it wasn't Percy. I looked behind quickly and saw that the Apollo chariot flipped over. The Stoll brothers in the Hermes chariot laughed, that is until their chariot got flipped over by the Apollo chariot. Now there was a pile of broken wood and four rearing horses, their riders on the dirt.
Turning my attention back to the race, I directed the chariot to turn, we were already at the first post.
"See ya!" Cornelius yelled at someone behind us.
Cornelius had just raised his arm to throw when a scream sounded.
