The Two of Us
My Only Angel
Chapter 2
This chapter, a flashback, part two of three, is all about the events that happened a week before the prologue's timeline.
"Dad!" He stood up, calling his attention, and looked into his eyes like a grown man. "Thank you for the thought but you don't need to do this." He tried to return the check but Daisuke denied it.
Under the starry night sky, the two of them went outside to the courtyard and they had a conversation. Throughout his life, as far as he could remember, he never had a chance to talk to him about the things not worth mentioning. He never knew him personally until this night. For the first time, the impassive father finally opened up. Sitting at the corridor, drinking his tea, he shared his past with his son.
He was a migrant back then together with his parents in the U.S. His father, Kyousuke's grandfather, was a police officer in California. Even though assured with benefits by the government, his salary was never enough to keep them going. Her mother insisted that it was the best for them to return to Japan but he refused for some reasons that a young Daisuke could not understand. Pushing his boundaries to the limits, he worked day and night for his family's needs and dreams.
Years had passed by peacefully until the day when Daisuke graduated from high school but it was that same fateful day when his father died because of a bank robbery.
Despite of being in the middle age, he could still remember the things that happened twenty years ago.
Just right after the ceremony, still wearing his graduation dress, he rushed to the hospital and saw his father lying at the bed lifelessly. The scene was just surreal for him. No words could ever describe it. For it was too much, he went out to take a breather.
Out of the blue, a man, who turned out to be his father's close friend and colleague, approached him. He reached out his condolences and secretly gave him a small envelope. He implied that Daisuke should not let his mother, who was grieving inside the emergency room, know about this. Calling his cute little daughter named Yoshino, the inspector waved goodbye to him and then left.
"Kyousuke, you're holding it right now."
"Wha-!? This letter? This money?"
"Yeah, that was meant for my college education."
"…" It rendered him speechless.
"He insisted me to go to college but I was too stupid back then. I disobeyed his orders…even his last request."
"This is what I get. I reap what I sow. Honestly, I never dreamt of being a police officer. I never thought that life would be this hard. I just realized this when your mother gave birth to you. I should have provided my family a better life."
"But, you have done a good job of –"
"This house, the car, and anything else you see are the result of your mother's hard work. I haven't prove anything yet." With a straight face, no matter how hard it was, he flushed his pride down to the toilet.
"Anyway, Kyousuke! Having a diploma is not assurance for a successful life but believe me, it will give you an edge for a better future. Never let this slip away. You have my full support!"
"Thank you, Dad!"
Ending the conversation, he drank his remaining tea and stood up.
"D-dad! Wait! I have something to tell you." With a nervous voice, Kyousuke hesitatingly called his father for his very own life consultation.
"Hmmm? If it's all about love, it's best to consult that with your mother."
"I-I fell in love with a girl who I should not have fallen in love with" Kyousuke averted his eyes.
"W-what are you saying?"
"I-I wanted to make my resolve."
"Resolve?"
"Dad, can you promise me that you'll not punch me in the face? I have a revelation to make."
"Ugh, as if I have a choice." Daisuke lend his ears to his son and sighed.
"I discovered something." Sweating in nervousness, Kyousuke took out a notebook from his pocket and showed it to his father.
It was Kirino's diary.
Upon finishing reading it, without any warning, Daisuke punched Kyousuke on the face.
"Hey! You broke your promise!"
Even though he saw it coming and prepared for it, it hurt a lot but after that, the two men had their compromises.
"This isn't even a joke. She isn't a kid anymore to write these kind of things. This is utterly disturbing."
"I'll be prank on this one, do you have feelings for her? Is it mutual?"
"I-I…" Kyousuke couldn't answer. He could not say a word.
"Don't tell me -"
Shouting in the top of his lungs, he confessed his truest feelings in front of his father.
"I-I would be lying if I said I didn't have feelings for her! I know that there should be no love between us siblings but this feelings…I-It just keeps growing stronger and stronger no matter how hard I stop it. She's my little sister goddammit!"
"As long you know what's right and wrong, there should be no problem. You should restrain yourself and just let this pass. It will just die down eventually."
"But I think...it would take forever."
"Kyousuke, it actually wouldn't because people change. Feelings and emotions always waver."
Two days had passed after they last talked to each other but those words never left his mind. Instead of throwing a celebration for he was accepted in his dream university, he was brooding over the fact that he fell in love, indeed, with Kirino. He never knew that this could happen since they grew together in the same roof since childhood. It was utterly disgusting like what his father had said. He could not stand the idea of that. Even though it would be a painful journey, he had no choice but to forget her and move on.
He wanted to forget her, his sinful past.
"But how?"
The heavens gave him an answer. While looking through the window pane of his classroom aimlessly, he saw Mikagami talking to Sena at the grounds.
It seemed Mikagami became a regular visitor of his school. For some reasons even though he was an outsider, he was now an official club member of the game club. For it was already the norm, to see him every day at school, he ignored him but he realized something.
"Kirino, this is for you, my gift…our last life consultation."
Without wasting any time, while in the middle of the class, he stood up and asked for permission, using the restroom as an alibi to go out of the classroom.
At the grounds, Mikagami, waving goodbye at Sena, was about to leave until he noticed Kyousuke running towards his direction.
"Mikagami!" Breathing heavily, with his uniform soaked in sweat, he was panting in exhaustion.
"Oh, Kyousuke-kun!"
"We need to talk."
"Talk about what?"
"I can't tell you here…let's go at the back of the school."
Even though Kyousuke was not that close with Mikagami, he knew that Mikagami could be trusted just by looking at his demeanor. He was like a harmless sheep to the point that people and friends doubted his gender.
"I have something to ask you?"
"Go on."
"Do you like Kirino?"
"Eh? W-what's this all of a sudden?"
"Just answer!"
"My feelings doesn't matter"
"Of course it matter! So, you like her - right?"
"…"
"?"
"Yeah…I-I really like her very much." He got flustered after saying those embarrassing words.
"Alright! Then, I'll give you my permission."
"Wha- I'm confused. I don't get it. Why are you telling me this?"
Of course, Kyousuke at all cost was avoiding conversations or topics about forbidden relationships between siblings because it would be a suicide given Mikagami's nature but he had no choice at that time so he spilled it out. Fortunately, Mikagami listened and behaved well understanding Kyousuke's problem.
Undeniably, he admitted that he liked incest but it was only limited to the 2D world. His opinion about the actual incest in reality was different – he was totally against it. He also cleared the misunderstanding that he was pairing up Kyousuke and Kirino. He said it very clearly that he was only joking and in the end, to save them from their delusions, he promised to Kyousuke that he would take care of Kirino and he would not make her cry.
"She will be my girlfriend, without fail!"
"Mikagami…"
In their delight, they suddenly hugged each other but unfortunately Sena unexpectedly followed them. She was left speechless upon seeing them hugging each other. For it was too visual, her glasses suddenly got clouded and she passed out in happiness.
"She got the wrong idea..."
"Totally."
"By the way, I have something to ask you. Do you have Ayase's number?
That same day, after school, as the sun went down in the afternoon, he went to the park to meet her.
"O-onii-san?"
Upon seeing her face, he promised to himself that he had no intentions of taking advantage of her. To begin with, he was not that type of guy to toy around people's feelings but he had no choice.
"Ayase."
With their fates intertwined, he told her everything including his forbidden feelings to Kirino. He told all of his secret and never left one.
Just like what his father had said, he wanted his feelings to waver. He wanted to forget all of it and by doing so, he opened his heart to Ayase.
"Ayase, please go out with me!" The table had turned. He was now asking the girl who he once turned down.
During this fated confession, he never said 'I like you' or 'I love you' because he would be straight out lying.
"W-why?"
"Ha? What do you mean?"
"S-she's heads over heels over you and most of all, she's your first love! Why me?"
"I already asked her but she rejected me on the spot. Even though she have Chuunibyou, she's a quite prideful woman – no, I'm wrong. I just could not understand her. She's so indecisive." At that time, Kyousuke was too naïve and did not know that Kirino was manipulating her.
"So, I'm the last resort. How pitiful!" Knowing his true intentions, Ayase was smart to realize that Kyousuke would be only using her as a tool, a mean, to meet his objective but she was an angel in love with a worthless and despicable human being. She had every reason in this world to reject him but in the end, with a blush on her face, with her heart beating the sound of love, she smiled and replied.
"Yes."
