Chapter 38: Christmas
"I'm not too sure about this, Emma." Mary Margaret said as she and David settled nervously onto the couch alongside Henry, Hook, Neal, and…Regina.
Yep. Regina. It was Christmas and instead of having three separate celebrations, Henry had had the brilliant idea to invite his dysfunctional family over for the holiday. At first everyone had been hesitant. Regina's idea of a perfect Christmas did not include the Charmings (and vice versa) and Emma did not really want to spend more time with Neal than strictly necessary. They'd extended the invitation to Gold and Belle, but due to the fact that things were still tense between Gold and Neal, it had been decided that it would just make things incredibly awkward.
But well, for Henry's sake, everyone decided they could just play nice. And it helped that they'd thought to stock up on lots of alcohol beforehand.
"Trust me." Emma said with a devious smirk. "You're going to like this." She sat down on the couch between Hook and her mother.
"Probably as much as I enjoyed seeing my pathetic alter ego prance across the box." Hook quipped, earning an elbow in the ribs from Emma.
"Shut up. And it's called a screen." Emma said, reaching for the bowl of popcorn resting on her son's lap.
"Shhh!" Henry said from his place, comfortably settled between Regina and Neal. "The movie's starting." They were watching Snow White, the Disney version with the singing. It had been Emma and Henry's ideas and judging by Hook's hilarious reaction to Peter Pan, they were in for a good laugh.
At first, the room was silent except for the movie. But soon enough, the cries started.
"What?!" Mary Margaret sputtered, nearly spilling her drink. "You have got to be kidding me! Look at her!" She cried, pointing at her onscreen self. "That outfit! They got it all wrong."
"The animals are pretty accurate though." David commented as he watched the birds gather around a singing Snow White. "You gotta admit that."
"Hmm." Regina nodded thoughtfully. "Not bad." She appraised the onscreen Evil Queen. "I do like her style."
Emma and Henry looked at each other and burst out laughing, tears of mirth flowing as they listened to their family's protests.
"You know, Graham was a lot hotter." Emma commented as she watched the Huntsman talk to the Queen.
"Hey." Hook said. "I take offense at that."
His statement earned him an eye roll. "Is that jealousy I hear?"
"I'm much more attractive than him and you know it." Hook said, causing Regina to shoot him a glare.
"Shush!" She snapped. So far, Regina's complaints had been down to a minimum, as compared to Mary Margaret and David's, but when they got the part where the Evil Queen transformed herself into the old hag, Regina spat out her coffee and stood up.
"Ok, that's it. I refuse to watch this any longer." She turned around and crossed her arms, her back to the TV. "Look at her! I look nothing like that. I would never transform myself into something so hideous."
"That's the best part." Henry said. He was practically rolling on the ground with laughter, his cheeks bright red as his body shook with barely suppressed giggles. "I can't believe you've never seen this before, Mom."
"Well I'm glad I haven't." Regina huffed, sitting back down, but it was clear from the small smile on her face that she was enjoying the time with her son. When Snow White collapsed, Regina cheered, causing the room to erupt in laughter while Mary Margaret mock glared.
As the movie continued to play out, Emma looked around the room. At her family. There was a strange, unfamiliar feeling growing inside.
Happiness.
For the first time ever, she was truly happy. Content with her life. She hadn't thought it'd be possible for her to be happy, but clearly she'd been wrong. And so, as she snuggled up against Hook, she wished that things would forever stay the way they were.
Completely and utterly perfect.
Author's note: If anyone's wondering, Neal broke up with Olivia. Who can blame him? She was a real pain in the ass.
