Life Starts Now
Chapter 5.) To Annoy a Mercenary
"Hey. Van Rook," Clairissa whispered again, from behind the bars of a jail cell. Said mercenary clenched his jaw tighter in an attempt to ignore the irritating girl. "Hey. Van Rook," Clairissa said again. "Van." She stared at him bug-eyed. "Rook."
"What?" he finally gritted out from between clenched teeth.
Clairissa looked back and forth quickly, as if to make sure no one was around, then leaned forwards and cupped her hands next to her mouth, as if sharing a big secret. "Hi," she breathed out. Then she giggled maniacally.
Van Rook was unfazed, as this was the third time Clairissa had done that. "That's nice," he said, returning his gaze to the book that he was in the middle of.
Yuugi, unable to control himself, snickered a little.
"Don't you start now, pest. I'm a mercenary: I have a reputation to uphold," Van Rook explained, his head cocking a bit to the right as he spoke.
"Okay. So about those donuts I mentioned earlier…"
"There will be. No. Donuts!" Van Rook finally exploded at Clairissa.
"Oh. Okay," she sighed in disappointment, completely unaffected that the man had just yelled at her.
She was, however, still sore that he had wrestled her into the cell so easily. After confronting Argost, she had planned on at least cutting that damn white hair of his, but hadn't even thought that he father's previous employer and mentor would employ his devilish sneaking techniques on her.
She sunk into despair once more, clutching her arms around her legs, which she curled up so her chin rested on her knees.
Unaware of the desolate thoughts swirling in Clairissa's head, Van Rook regarded her with a feeling akin to dread. She had been quiet for far too long…
"Van Rook?" Argost's smooth voice enunciated from the small tap in his helmet, causing him to involuntarily jerk his head up.
Clairissa snapped out of her depression as Van Rook shivered, attempting to hide his jump. The girl recognized this quirk as being something he did when Argost contacted him. She sat completely still and closed her eyes, straining her ears to hear anything of the bastard's annoying French accent.
The only thing she was able to make out was "Kur" and "Mr. Mutou".
So, Mr. Mutou does have something to do with Kur! she thought.
…
Wait a second. Who's Mr. Mutou?
"But you told me to-" Van Rook started angrily. "I swear you…" He never finished his sentence, standing up and heading towards the door.
"Good riddance. Hey, Rookie, you were starting to smell! While you're out, you should take a shower!" Clairissa exclaimed.
"Hello, Pot. My name is Kettle." He turned around in front of the open door with a deadpan expression. "You're black." He then left the room.
Clairissa clenched her raised fist and her teeth, beginning to shake with anger. "I wonder what he could possibly mean by that!"
"I think… he trying to tell… you-"
"I KNOW!" Clairissa roared, interrupting the boy, who had been silent for most of the time. "ROOKIE, I WILL FRICKING KILL YOU!" she yelled at the top of her lungs.
Yuugi was nearly convinced that her voice could have been heard around the world. It was simply that loud.
Once Clairissa had calmed down, and was reduced to nearly a puddle on the floor, Yuugi decided to break the silence by asking, "So, could… I… ask your name is?" When she glanced up, he smiled shyly.
"No."
Yuugi's smile dropped. "Sorry, I don't mean…"
"It's okay. I just don't give my name to people I don't trust not to use it for alternate purposes," she replied bluntly. "You can call me Míri."
"He knows your name," Yuugi said, referring to Van Rook.
"I trust him not to blackmail me with my name," she replied simply.
He nodded understandingly. Clairissa simply had known the man longer than she knew Yuugi. To break the awkward silence settling, he introduced himself. "My name is Yuugi Mutou."
Clairissa's head whipped around almost before he had finished speaking. "Yuugi Mutou. As in the King of Games, Yuugi Mutou?"
"Yes?" he replied unsurely. "Why?" Yuugi prayed that she wasn't another of those horrible fangirls.
"Oh, my cousin is obsessed with the game. He's mentioned you a couple times."
"That's cool…" He finally realized that sometime during their conversation, they had switched into his native language. "So… You speak Japanese," he pointed out blandly.
"Yup! I speak seven languages." She continued in a mumble, "Not as impressive as Ulraj or Drew…" She shook her head. "Anyway, yeah, I speak Japanese!"
"Why?" Yuugi asked curiously. He had never heard of a person randomly learning foreign languages for fun.
"Well, simply because my father and I hid out in Japan for a while." She grinned rakishly. "Best sushi e~ver!" she said in a sing-song tone of voice.
Yuugi grinned at her attempt at a joke.
CZR: Firstly, all those typos with Yuugi's speech? Yes, those are intentional. He can't speak English very well, so that's why he's hesitating and messing up words ^^
Oh gosh I didn't expect anyone find this, because it's in a dead crossover zone! There are two stories in it; both of which are mine (this one and the previous draft xD)
So, thanks to Corina O for your review~ That was very kind of you *Smiles and blushes darkly* I am so glad that you think my story is awesome! I simply love hearing from people, so I just *Fangirls* Eheh, really thank you ever so much!
