Patricia's POV
"How could you even say that, Patricia?" He looked somewhat hurt.
"Oh sorry… what were you saying?" I asked, trying to get him to ignore what I had just said.
"I… I've been writing…" he says.
"Writing?" I asked, surprised.
"Yea… and I've been posting them on an online site, Fanfiction. Apparently, a famous best-selling author read them and thought they were good enough for publishing…" he finished. I just stare at him. Was this really the Eddie who practically failed English and all the other subjects? The Eddie who hated reading? The Eddie who-
"Yacker? Can you say something?" he pleads.
"Oh… um… that's great, isn't it? Sorry, I was just thinking about you in school… how you hated reading, writing essays, and stuff…"
He chuckled.
"I know, surprising, right?" he adds.
"What did you write about anyways?" I asked, curious.
"Um… Sibuna…" he finished quietly.
"What?" I questioned.
"Sibuna," he said a little bit louder.
"Oh… um… okay…" I say, quite shocked. I mean, wasn't Sibuna supposed to be a secret thing?
"Listen, I know you don't really like talking about this stuff, so if you don't want to publish it to the world-"
"No, Eddie. Go ahead, do it. I mean, if it's a hit, it's a plus for us, isn't it? We'll have four kids by the middle of next month, eh?" I really meant it. "Maybe I could start writing too?" I joked.
"Six kids…" he said suddenly.
"What?" I said.
"Um… adoption agency called a few days ago… they have twins – a girl, Joy, and a boy, Alfie, who're twins… they're orphans – their mother died giving birth to them and when their father heard that… he got into a car accident…" Eddie mumbled.
"So you want to adopt them?" I cautiously asked.
"Maybe…" he replied.
"Eddie, look. It sounds really unfortunate, poor twins, but look at my stomach – it could burst any second! Having 4 kids isn't normal these days, let alone 6!" I finished with an exclamation.
"Yea, I know… but will you at least think about it? Please?" he begged me. I sighed. I was too tired to argue.
"Fine, I'll think about it. But no promises," I said, and I went upstairs.
"Six kids… six kids… six kids… six kids… six kids…" I mumbled to myself as I propped myself up on my bed. "Six kids…"
"Patricia?" Eddie's voice came from behind the door.
"Yea?" I answered. He came in.
"Can we talk?" he asked.
"I think we're already doing that," I said, attempting to lighten the mood a little bit. It worked. He gave me a small smile and sat on the bed too.
"So… the kids?" he asked.
"Eddie, I… I've thought about it, but…" I failed to continue.
"I respect your decision…"
"Eddie… I… It's gonna be hard, raising my own kids, let alone kids from another person, calling me 'mum', calling you 'dad'…"
"That's true, but think of them they don't even know who their parents are, hell, they don't even know that they're… dead…" he whispered the last part of the sentence.
I sighed.
"When did you become such a softie?" I teased, smiling. He shook his head.
"Can we at least go see them?" he asked. I considered it. Could it hurt to just go see them?"
"No," I replied, after a few cautious minutes of thinking. "Seeing them will only make us get attached to them."
"I… okay…"
He walked out of the room. It strangely went easier than I thought.
"Eddie?" I called him back.
"Yea?" his face popped round the door.
"How will we afford to feed them all? To send them to school? To buy all their needs and wants and-"
"Don't worry about that kinda stuff. I'm going out to meet the publisher right now. If we're lucky, if our adventures sound convincing enough… we might just be able to make it…" he finished. I didn't understand. I was confused.
"Convincing enough? Wha- what do you mean by that? It actually happened…"
"Yea, but not to the world… To the world, it's my imagination that happened." He winked and walked out.
My husband wasn't the doofus the used to be…
Two days later
Patricia's POV
"Yes, could I?" I spoke into the phone.
"Yes, sure, of course. Do you have a time preference?" the voice over the line asked.
"Um… will 11am this morning suit you?" I asked.
"No problem. You can come in at 11."
"Okay, thank-you." I nervously shut the phone and put it on the table. What are you doing? I asked myself. I shook my head and made my way upstairs to get ready to where I needed to be at 11.
Eddie was out until 3pm, since he was at another meeting with the publishers, so this was my only chance to do this without him knowing. I was doing something horrible behind my husband's back, but I didn't have a choice. I wanted to give them a chance.
As the time approached, I got into my car and nervously started the engine. Yes, I'm nervous today, don't blame me.
About 15 minutes into the drive, I got a call from Eddie. Since my car could answer it, I pushed the 'answer' button.
"Hello?" Eddie's voice came.
"Hey," I said with a shaking voice.
"Um… are you okay?" he asked.
"Sure, I was just clearing my throat," I lied.
"I'm gonna be slightly late, around 5pm," he said. Then he added, "but I'll bring dinner, kay?" he asked.
"Yea, sure."
"Okay, I gotta go, I love you, bye."
"Love you too," and with that, I pressed the 'end call' button.
Great, gives me more time," I muttered to myself and pulled into the parking area.
I stepped out the car and took a deep breath. I looked at the huge sign that stood ahead of me.
It read "..."
Oh gosh…
I wiped my sweaty hands on my black pants and headed for the 20-story building.
