Here we are guys - end of the road. A small request from theypreferthetermpeople for the booklet part in this chapter.
Overall, thanks to thesameguest, TheTBone, Mea23 and MeryGFos for their beta work. Thanks to everyone who has made suggestions, reviewed, read and PM'd. If you would be so kind please read the longer Author's Note at the end :)
Enjoy...
As the time passed, the guests arrived and the champagne flowed. It wasn't short of its dramas. It wasn't short of its hidden nerves or of its secrets, but it was an event that allowed for it all to be put aside and for the family to focus on one thing. Themselves, together. Each of them in all of their own pockets of the same jacket, each with their own additions and contents inside, but all zipped up together in a cloak of warmth and comfort.
"Enjoying married life?" Kasey asked, siding up to Lena at the buffet table.
"I am." She smiled. "There's a lot more bread involved than I thought though." She teased with an eyebrow flick tossing Kasey a roll as she dipped her head down bashfully. Stef came up behind and eclipsed her in a hug around her back.
"Are you bothering my wife?" She asked menacingly in her ear. "I'm pretty sure I can arrest you for that." She gave her a kiss as Kasey yanked a bite off the bread.
"There's a lot of stuff you could arrest me for but you'll never find out about it." She mumbled smugly back through her full mouth as Stef scoffed and in a sweet example of role reversal, finally had a chance to steal the bread off her child.
"Well thank you for all of your help anyway, blunders aside." Lena added, ditstracting a squinting Kasey away from giving Stef a glare. "We couldn't have done this so fast without you."
"See Mom, that's what gratitute is. You're my favourite, Mama." She beamed back as Lena shook her head with a laugh.
"Oh! Not enough gratitude? Well you've asked for it now." Stef gripped around tighter as Kasey groaned, knowing what was coming. "Thank you, thank you, thank you." Stef sloppily repeated while kissing her ear and cheek, Kasey wincing and trying to escape.
"OK, OK! Can I get my body back now?" She whimpered through the kisses.
"In a minute...I'm not done yet." Stef squeezed a little tighter and tortured her some more, the champagne clearly taken as much hold of her as she had of her daughter.
"Congratulations you two!" Their friend Jenna came over with a hug for Lena. "Absolutely beautiful wedding!"
"We were just talking about how last minute it was and how we couldn't have done it without the kids' help."
"We were happy to." Kasey smiled back, Stef's still swaying her slightly but with a much more relaxed grip since the interruption.
"It's a strange name choice though, I've heard of people combining the two names into one...I've just never seen it." She added with earnest politeness, flashing her obviously un-amended booklet. Kasey turned edgily to avoid eye contact with Lena. Stef buried her face into her daughter's hair with smirk.
"Really can't let me go?" She whispered to Stef who held tighter with a firm "Nope."
"Looks like you got the joke booklet we snuck in there." Lena replied, thinking fast to cover. "It's like a prize...now Kasey gets you drinks for the rest of the day." She smiled with another eyebrow flick, proud of her resolution. Chuckling in the sighing girl's ear, Stef finally yielded her grip.
"Red or white?" Kasey mumbled, defeated before taking the answer and fulfilling her task.
"Care to dance?" Mike approached Kasey from the side once Jenna was set with her glass and Stef and Lena were deeply engrossed in a different topic of conversation. "You blew me off at the Quineceañera with that boot of yours." He smiled as she squinted.
"I dunno..." She replied nervously, Mike's head dipping in disappointment. "I've heard stories from Mariana. I'm not sure I want my shoes ruined." Seeing the play, he shook his head and hauled her briskly into a clasp as they took to the floor.
"Are you enjoying the wedding?" he asked once they had got into the easy rhythm.
Kasey looked around as they graced slowly around the floor. "It's a beautiful event. Moms look amazing and the ceremony was awesome. I could just eat Jude up sometimes." She chuckled, remembering how adorable he looked when almost losing the rings.
Mike nodded affectionately, taking a few moments to focus on the steps before beginning to talk again.
"So." He continued. "Is everything...OK?" He asked, thinking back to her words in the waiting room. The words that had been some of the hardest he'd ever heard but at the same time the ones that he had never been more grateful or proud to hear come from one of the people he loved most in the world.
Kasey flicked the corner of her mouth up as she looked lovingly at his face.
"I think it's pretty OK." She replied with a nod as they waltzed on, catching a wink of Stef's as they passed.
"Can you believe we're married?" Lena whispered, gazing deeply into her wife's eyes, Jenna having left them to it.
Stef raised her eyebrows gently with a smile. "I can't believe I'm lucky enough to have you at all." She nuzzled back as Lena dipped her head with a small blush.
"Yeah well that goes both ways." She replied softly pulling her as close as it was possible in their choreography.
From their now quiet spot alone, they looked over at their children - all scattered around in different parts. They saw Mariana twirling in a three with Jesus and Lexi, thinking over the road they had bumped and stalled along.
They clasped their arms into a link as they saw Kasey cuddling up to Mike, their dance having finished, and Brandon walking over to join them. He had a subdued smile which grew as Kasey poked him and he knocked a kick back. Mike soon stifling them both with a flick on each of their ears.
They dipped their heads together as they looked to Callie and Jude - their two newest babies who even though had barely been in their lives 2 months, they now couldn't imagine them not being so. The lost girl and her never forgotten boy - trekking for so long alone in the darkness and now finally finding a light to guide them.
Stef looked back to Lena, pulling her round face on and clasping her arms around her waist.
"You know, I don't think it's going to be an easy ride with six kids." Lena whispered. "But I'm glad I've got a wife to hold on with me."
Stef looked at her momentarily before her face dropped into a horrified glare.
"Who is this woman?" She spat back harshly as Lena rolled her eyes. "It's that Fadosteram hussy, isn't it?" she whimpered.
"I can't believe you tell me this on our wedding night!" She hysterically began to fake sob as Lena dived her face forward and shut her up with a kiss. They lost themselves in the feeling as the music and laughter dissolved around them before slowly and gently pulling away, both with a dappy grin.
"Please zip it, Mrs Adams Foster." Lena whispered with a contented squint
"Anything for you, my wife." Stef whispered back gently, licking her lips. "And that ride you were talking about - the good, the bad and all the bits in between..." she gazed as the light above them danced off Lena's eyes.
"I'm ready to hold on tight."
So there it is. Once again, thanks for the huge support I've received throughout this fic. It's been my longest by far and I can't believe it's taken 4 months! As always, you would make my day if you answer a few questions. I'd love to know what you thought of this chapter but also overall:
1) Favourite Episode/Storylines
2) Favourite Character Pairings
3) Bits you think could have been improved
4) Any ideas for what you may like to see in the future (pairing options, story ideas, past, future, flashback/present mixture fics etc.)
These all help me plan and improve my writing - I also welcome other comments as well, whether you're someone I regularly speak to or not - don't be shy!
I am going to be taking a break from writing now (the long stories at least), but if I do decide to come back (which I imagine I will) it will all help.
If you want to stay in touch with my work, whack on an Author Follow and remember I do have 3 other active stories:
The Mice Will Play: My current 11-chapter fic about a party the kids throw when Stef and Lena are away.
Fostering Fun: One shots and shorts in normal universe (I will probably be doing more eventually, at least sporadically)
Fosters, Nerds and Dummies: One shots and shorts in this universe (same as above applies)
Maybe see you over at one of them, or in a future fic, but if not - THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU and have a wonderful, love filled day.
All the best,
Grace
