Author's Note: So, I know this hasn't been updated in months, but with all the recent follows and reviews I have found the motivation to write some more. I'm going to try to stay on top of this story throughout the rest of the summer now that school is out for me. I hope you enjoy this longer chapter :)
-A year later-
"Take a deep breath and follow my lead," David softly spoke into Emma's ear. Emma grunted in response. This was not her idea of a fun day, but she knew she needed to learn how to dance if she wanted to play the part of being a princess.
Emma took a deep breath and exhaled slowly to calm her nerves that were driving her mad inside. She felt her father lean into her space as he took a step toward her. In response, she took a step back and moved her right foot to the left until she felt it land on somebody else's.
"Shit, I am so sorry. I told you I was bad at this." Emma rambled, embarrassed that she stepped on her father's foot.
David sighed with a smile because he expected this to happen. "Emma, relax." He put his hands on her shoulders and gently pushed them down out of their tension state. "This is only your first lesson and I am sure that you will get better with time."
Emma shook out the tension in her body. She was obviously over thinking this and needed to calm down or else she would never learn this dance.
Emma nodded after hearing what her father said, "Can you show it to me once more?" David smiled now messaging her shoulders because Emma hadn't backed out of the position they were in.
David back up a few steps, "Of course." He then moved his right foot up followed by his left then moved over to the left, down and back to his original place. "Think of it like a box." He suggested.
It was like something went off in Emma's head and everything started to click. A box. Of course. She understood this concept.
"Why didn't you say that before?" Emma smiled, mimicking her father's movements from earlier. She practically did a happy dance at the end clapping and all. "Did you see that?!" She exclaimed.
David couldn't help the growing smile on his face at the pure excitement on his daughter's face, "I did. I guess I should have explained it as a box earlier." He walked up to her and offered his right hand with a bow, "Can I offer you a dance, princess?" He smirked at the term though he didn't know if she could see it.
Emma grinned at his cheesy line while humming a laugh through her teeth, "Sure." She put her left hand in his slightly bigger right hand, which David responded by standing straight and moving his other arm around her waist. She was timid at first, but gently placed her free hand on his shoulder.
"Ready…three…two…" David counted down and without anymore warning took a step forward and to his left, which Emma followed without any mistakes. She smiled in excitement that she was finally getting something right. She wasn't stepping on his toes or feet anymore because she honed the skills necessary to dance in a simple box formation.
Once the box was completed, David twirled his daughter, which only had her giggling like a little girl. David couldn't help, but to laugh with her. Emma's giggling was contagious. They continued to dance the formation a few more times before he grinned and bowed once more to end it.
David stood up, "You are a natural just like your mother." Emma smiled looking down a bit then back up at him. David was never happy that he had to give his little girl up as a baby and send her through the closet to only see her 28 years later. He wasn't happy with the past, but he was definitely enjoying his present and he had only the best outlook for the future.
"Thanks." Emma looked down at her hands briefly folding them in and out then back up at David, "I'm pretty sure mom will always be a better dancer than me."
David smiled at how comfortable Emma felt calling Snow 'mom.' It warmed him on the inside to know that they may have got through to Emma a bit in the past year. She used to only call them 'mom' or 'dad' whenever she was upset, but now it was happening more and more often. She finally trusted somebody other than herself.
Emma absentmindedly hummed along to the tune that was coming from the older, antique looking stereo. "One more time?" Emma asked, while David continued to stare at her as if she were the most adorable thing he had ever seen.
This snapped him out of his reverie, "If you're up for it…"
Emma nodded her head a few times, "Yeah. I need the practice." David and her got back into the dancing position and danced the formation once more. Emma couldn't hold back the laugh that escaped her when David twirled her once, twice, three times. David smiled and chuckled along side her. He had never heard a more beautiful sound.
They finished their final dance and Emma was clutching her stomach still laughing. She was having a blast and with her father nonetheless. She took a seat on the ground and leaned her head up against the wall behind her. David still had the biggest smile on his face as he changed the song on the stereo.
Emma pointed at the stereo, "Oh, hey, I know this song!" David stopped touching the older stereo and moved to sit down beside Emma on the ground with a grunt. "Somebody is getting old," She nudged him in the stomach with a giggle.
David rubbed his stomach and chuckled, "I am about…" He thought about his age when the curse broke and how old Emma was now, "60…maybe? Yeah, let's not talk about my real age."
Emma laughed through her smile, "This whole curse thing really screws with everybody's age…" She sighed through her nose, "It makes things complicated."
David patted her knee, "It can only get better from here."
Both Emma and David sat in comfortable silence listening to the tune coming from the stereo. Emma leaned her head back against the wall and closed her eyes. Before she knew it, her head was falling onto David's shoulder on its on accord. David smiled, but didn't say a word and instead leaned his head gently on top of hers. He could tell she had fallen asleep because her breathing had evened out.
"Dinner is hot and—" A woman walked through the door where Emma and David were napping together. Snow stopped at the sight of her two favorite people and put a hand on her heart. She was thankful she didn't wake them, so that she could take in every detail of this moment and memorize it.
Snow walked over to the other side of David and gently shook his arm. He took in a sharp breath and opened his eyes to see his wife and then felt his daughter still leaning on him. David tried not to move too much, so that he wouldn't wake her,
"Hey, beautiful." He whispered to his wife moving his head off of Emma's a bit. Snow looked at Emma sleeping and thought of how young she looked. It brought tears to her eyes.
She whispered back, "Hi, I just wanted to tell you dinner was done."
David smiled, "Sounds good." He thought back to Emma and him dancing and sleepily grinned, "She dances like her mother."
Snow quietly giggled trying to picture her daughter dancing, "Does she have two left feet?" David shook his head.
"She's a natural. You should see her when she finally let's go for even just a moment she's…" David searched for the right word to describe Emma, "beautiful."
