Number One Jerk.
"So," Bunny said looking at Jack. The two were in Warren, Jack sitting on an egg golem failing at looking casual. Bunnymund's green eyes studied the spirit of Winter from his spot leaning against a tree. "yer gonna tell me what happened?"
"No."
At that Bunny tried very hard not to roll his eyes and went back to painting an egg. It was just like how it used to be when Jack was still human, he'd go knock on a tree to get Bunny so they could to the Warren when he was upset and didn't want to deal with his parents. North and Tooth are fantastic parents but they could be so... overbearing... A bit much. Too overwhelming to deal with when you're upset.
After a short while Jack finely spoke up. When he did he was unusually quiet and he spoke in a solemn tone. "Dad and I got in a fight."
Bunny's ears perked up at that, in the past whenever Jack had come to the Warren when upset it had been because his parents had had a fight that seemed more serious to the child than it had really been or when he felt useless in comparison to the rest of is eccentric family.
Jack didn't argue with his parents... then again a lot had changed in the past three centuries. "About what?"
Jack sighed. "Dad wanted to know about some of the stuff that happened during the time I was... You know?" He asked finally looking at Bunny.
Bunny did know. The 300 years when they thought Jack was dead. Obviously a lot had happened in the time period that Jack had gone without them. A lot of good things, that much was clear in whenever the Winter spirit's friends visited, but also a lot of bad things, that they knew thanks to the dark looks that would sometimes cross Jack's face. Or of course because of the glimpses Tooth had gotten when she viewed Jack's memories with his lateral incisor.
Though Jack usually had no trouble answering their questions. The boy was a master in changing the subject and would usually tell them about adventures he had during his time without them, the people he had met, the places he'd seen and soon the guardians forgot their original questions about dark looks fighting experience.
So for Jack to get upset about North asking didn't make sense.
Which was why Bunny snorted. "There's something else right?"
"I'm also world's number one jerk."
Bunny blinked at that, hadn't that been what Jack had once called him? "Then what am I?"
Jack smirked. "Second place."
"And Pitch?"
"Oh I have two lists, one for nice people who don't mean to be jerks and the other is for people who are well... ba" Jack shrugged, appearing to be relaxed. If only he was... "Y'know, Pitch, rogue summer spirits and all that."
Recognizing the attempt at distraction for what it was Bunny backtracked to the matter that they needed to discuss. "So what did ya do to kick me off first place?"
Jack looked away, his relaxed expression morphing into one of shame. After three whole minutes of Jack not saying anything and looking downright with himself the Winter child finally spoke up. "You know how mom's been begging to meet Chika right?
The girl they had only gotten a glimpse of, who apparently was Jack's best friends, who Jack clearly wanted to be more than friends with? How could Bunny forget? Tooth constantly gushed about her 'baby growing up' not that, that was something that Jack could do... "Yeh."
"Well earlier I decided I should ask Chika to come over some time, but I didn't want be all 'hey my family wants to meet you' so I tried to be...Smooth." Jack explained sounding miserable as he said the word 'smooth'. "So I started talking about you guys so I could casually ask if she'd want to meet you all. I told her about, you, Sandy, aunt Katherine and grandpa. Finally I tell her about mom and dad... And then I asked if she'd like to come to the 'pole later today." Jack muttered palming his forehead.
"She said no?" Aster guessed, he didn't see the problem really. Well Jack is a teenager so maybe he should have expected girl drama. "Still, ah don't see what tha problem is-"
"Today's the 298 anniversary of her mother's dead."
Oh...
Oh!
Bunny grimaced. He looked at Jack who was still looking miserable. "Aw no mate, tell me ya didn't." Sure 298 years is a long time, but you never get over a loss like that. Never fully.
Nodding Jack got up and jumped down from the golem. "I went on and on about how happy I am to have my family back and she didn't say anything till I asked if she wanted to come meet you guys." The spirit of Winter started pacing, an angry look on his face. Anger that was only directed at himself. "I always remember today so I can distract her" He muttered to himself. "Of all the days I could ask I asked her today! I'm such an idiot."
Well, no point in telling the bloke that he had screwed up, Jack seemed aware of that himself. "Well, it wasn't the smartest thing to do." Bunnymund said crossing his arms. "Question is, what are ya gonna do about it?"
He hadn't expected that. Surprised Jack turned Bunny. "Wha-"
"Ya need ta apologize to yer dad." Bunny continued. "And make it up to yer girl seeing ya hurt 'er feelings and she'd probably want a distraction today, just like you said."
During Bunny's talk Jack started nodding realizing Bunnymund was right. What was he doing feeling bad for himself?! "You're right!" He needed to apologize to his dad and then make it to Chika... "But how?" He wasn't talking to Bunny.
Starting to pace again Jack thought out loud. "I've already her on that sleigh ride... She loves to see new places." New places... "That's it!" The teen cheered jumping up.
Before Bunny could ask what he'd come up with Jack had grabbed his staff and was riding the wind. "Thanks kangaroo! I owe you one!" Jack cried before he let the wind carry him out of the Warren.
"NOT A BLOODY KANGAROO, MATE!" Bunny yelled after him, watching Jack fly off.
hopefully Jack and North wouldn't be fighting next time Jack had girl trouble.
Author: Happy New Year!
Next chapter or the one after that will be the one in which Chika and the rest of Jack's family will finally be properly introduced. I already got it planned out, but if there's anything in particular you'd like to see during that meeting let me know, and I'll see if I can get it in.
A major thank you to all of you for reading and staying with me throughout this.
