AN: I'm so sorry for being gone so long guys. I've been having laziness issues over the past few weeks, but hopefully I'll have more luck now.

I had a really difficult time writing this scene because I really wanted to get it right, but I just wasn't sure. Hopefully you guys like it though. It's just my opinion of what could have gone through Castle's head when Coonan had him at gunpoint.

Reviews are strongly encouraged and greatly appreciated!

It had all happened far too quickly. One minute Rick was standing in the break room with Beckett, desperately trying to make her see that she didn't let her mother down. He knew that was an impossibility; the woman she'd become could never be a disappointment to any mother. And it felt like seconds later Coonan had a gun shoved into his back, and Montgomery had one aimed very close to his face.

Beckett was going to let him go; Rick could see it in her eyes. It would be one thing if Coonan would ever actually tell her, but he wouldn't, especially not if he was allowed to walk out of here.

He wanted so badly to be able to fix this for her, would gladly give any amount of money if it would help any. But at this point all he was was a liability, someone whose peril was complicating her decision. She shouldn't have to worry about him in a situation like this. If he hadn't been there, she could've easily disarmed Coonan, but yet again he must be in the way.

There was nothing he could do about that now though. All he could do was try to convince her that letting Coonan go wasn't the answer. She would still never get him to tell who'd hired him, and he would kill again. He was too good, and made too much money to stop. Rick couldn't blame her for wanting to take the risk, but he knew how much she'd regret doing so in the future.

He looked her in the eyes and shook his head before mouthing don't. He knew full well she wouldn't listen, and she had every right not to, but he had to try.

Beckett looked at the floor and Rick knew he'd lost her.

"Roy, please." The desperation in her voice broke his heart, but he stared and Montgomery anyway, begging him not to let this happen.

Montgomery stared hard at Coonan before slowly lowering his gun. Rick could feel Coonan relax and he tried to find a way to fix the situation.

"That's right Roy. Nice and easy." He said as he started to push Rick forward again.

Without thinking, Rick did the one thing that came to mind, and threw his head back into Coonan's nose. That was definitely more painful than he'd anticipated.

Time seemed to slow as Rick fell against the wall, holding the back of his head and searching for Coonan. As he watched Coonan raise his gun and aim it at his chest, he realized how stupid his actions were. Had he really thought he could actually help? He was the hostage. He was supposed to look terrified and do as he was told. But of course, he had to try and be the hero.

Rick watched then, as a gunshot sounded and Coonan fell. He turned to Beckett and saw the pain in her eyes, now covered by resolve. His heart fell. This was his fault. Any chance she may have had, he'd just lost it for her.

And then everyone was just standing there, watching as she futilely fought to revive Coonan. Nobody could take their eyes off of her, but they were just standing. Pain radiated off her and Rick couldn't stand the sight. He crouched down and laid a tentative hand on her shoulder, wanting nothing more than to wrap her in his arms and make the pain go away.

But he couldn't do that; her pain was his fault. He had caused this.
