Chapter 17
Vidia hissed again and smiled as she watched Fairy Mary cringe against Fairy Gary, glancing around wildly. The two guild fairies moved around them in a circle, sword and lantern held out before them. Vidia remained crouched, poised to spring. She could hear the others rustling loudly in the brush and hoped that they had gotten the message. Fairy Gary's carrying the Blue Pixie Dust, we need to get it! She thought, staring at the satchel in the large sparrow-man's hands. , a broken wagon wheel wobbled. All the fairies spun around as something fell out from behind it, something with a familiar cap.
"Terence!" Fairy Gary suddenly exclaimed, darting away from the group towards the fallen figure, ignoring the guild fairy's cry to stay away. "Terence?" He knelt beside the dusk fairy, who groaned. "Are you okay?" He placed a hand on Terence's cap.
"Grrrr!" Terence looked up, his eyes flashing purple. Fairy Gary cried out in alarm as Terence pounced on him, hissing fiercely.
"What's happened to him?" Fairy Mary screamed, glancing at the Guild fairies who looked stunned as Terence snapped at FAiry Gary. The elder sparrow-man was crying out in fear as he struggled to keep the younger dust-keeper at bay. Vidia had to fight the urge to laugh.
"The Duskmoth's gotten to him. He's become a sprite!" One of them replied.
"We have to help him!" Fairy Mary started forward, but one of the guild fairies held her back.
"No, we can't lose you too!" She yelled. "Gale!" The sparrow-man with the lantern rushed forward. Terence saw the lantern coming and darted backwards, releasing Fairy Gary. As Fairy Mary rushed to help him, Gale trust the lantern at Terence like a spear. Terence hissed angrily and Vidia saw him cringe away from the light.
"Psst, Vidia!" Vidia looked to the side and saw Rosetta staring at her through the grass. "What's the plan" she whispered.
"I'll get that lantern out of Gale's hands, then we all rush them. Whatever happens, don't let them take that pouch. The blue pixie dust is in it" Vidia replied. Rosetta nodded and withdrew her head. Vidia could hear her whispering her instructions around. She waited, watching Terence flinch away from the light.
"Yeah, that's right!" Gale yelled as Terence stumbled and fell backwards. "Stay down if you know what's good for you!" Now! Vidia thrust out a hand, sending a small, but powerful gust of wind at Gale. The wind struck him hard and he was knocked over, the lantern flying out of his hands and landing in the brush.
"The lantern!" He yelled, running after it. The other fairy meanwhile, had come between Terence and Fairy Mary and Gary, her sword at the ready. But she was so nervous it was shaking, and Vidia saw a smile flicker across Terence's face for a second. Vidia couldn't help smiling as well, she looked so silly!
"Gale, where's the lantern?" She yelled, flinching as Terence fake-lunged at her.
"The lantern's wet!" Gale yelled back. "I don't think it's going to...aaahhh!" Gale suddenly screamed and darted backwards as Silvermist rose in front of him, glaring at him though narrowed purple eyes. At the same time, Fawn erupted from the brush on the other side of the glaring, growling like a wild animal. Vidia smiled as she saw Tinkerbell leap from her hiding place to hover over the group, hissing.
"It's her!" She yelled, her sword point following Tinkerbell as she came to land beside Terence, who had gotten to his feet. Fairy Mary's eyes widened and she gasped in horror as both fairies hissed at her. A loud roar made everyone glace around as Klank tore up part of the snowflake basket pully and threw it aside. With a growl, Rosetta emerged from hiding, she clenched her hands and raised them up, and dark vines sprouted from the ground, towering over them like a pair of deadly hands. Iridessa emerged from behind these vines, hissing like a snake, pale orbs of moonlight glowing in her hands.
Fairy Mary, Fairy Gary, and the two guild fairies backed into each other, staring around with wide eyes as a ring of sprites slowly surrounded them. Vidia smiled, then emerged from her hiding place, giving an extra-loud hiss to get their attention. She was rewarded by the look of terror on the guild fairy's faces. For a moment, Vidia just held their gaze, and as she did, she saw Gale's hand slowly sneak around and grab the strap on the pouch that Fairy Gary was holding. She hissed angrily, and Gale flinched. Tinkerbell hissed as well, and Vidia caught her eye. Tinkerbell glanced down at Gale, then back up to Vidia, and gave the tiniest of nods. Vidia's lip curled up, than she lunged at Gale.
Everything seemed to happen at once, Gale screamed as he saw her attack and in one smooth move, yanked on the strap, tore off the pouch containing the blue pixie dust from Fairy Gary's hands, and took off, rocketing away into the night, followed by his companion, abandoning Fairy Mary and Fairy Gary. Vidia gave an angry screech and gave chase. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Tinkerbell and Terence following her, and heard a scream of terror from Fairy Mary an instant before the night swallowed them.
"Gale's got the Pixie Dust" Terence hissed.
Tinkerbell nodded. "We can't let him get to the winter woods"
"I got him" Vidia smiled and rocketed ahead, quickly closing the gap between herself and Gale. The other fairy saw her coming and spun in midair, drawing her sword, but Vidia simply swerved around her and kept flying.
"Gale! Look out!" The fairy's yell made Gale look back. Spotting Vidia on his tail, he sped up, but Vidia was sprite-enhanced and easily caught up with him.
"Aahh! Get away! Get Away!" he screamed, desperately weaving between the trees, but Vidia easily kept pace with him. She was now so close that she could almost touch him. She hissed, he glanced back and screamed so high he sounded like a girl for a second. It was all Vidia could do to keep her scary face on, she felt like she would burst from keeping her laughter hidden.
A screech from behind made Vidia glance back to see Tinkerbell following her. She caught Vidia's eye and winked, than gave a hiss. Vidia glanced forward again to see the fearful look in Gale's eyes and her started to move his arms and legs frantically as if that would help him fly faster, the pouch holding the pixie dust waved wildly. Vidia heard a snigger from Tinkerbell, who had drawn level with her by now.
"SPRITES!" Gale suddenly screamed aloud. Vidia and Tinkerbell exchanged a look, both were struggling to keep from laughing. Suddenly, Vidia noticed that Tinkerbell's wings were beginning to sparkle.
"Tink, your wings" She hissed, Tinkerbell noticed and worry crept into her eyes.
"We must be getting near the border" She whispered back. "If my sister is there..."
"We'll just have to stop him before he crosses it" Vidia clenched her fists and accelerated at Gale.
"SPRITES!" Gale screamed at the top of his lungs. Vidia was so close that she winced as his voice invaded her enhanced ears. "THEY'RE RIGHT BEHIND ME!" Gale screamed as the border came in sight. Narrowing her eyes, Vidia could see a crowd of fairies along the border, one of them had sparkling wings. Growling, Vidia thrust out her arm, sending another burst of wind at Gale, striking him just as he reached the edge of the autumn woods. He yelled and spun in the air like a top, the pouch of blue dust slipping from his grasp. When he stopped spinning, he found himself facing Tinkerbell, who growled in his face. "SPRITES!" He yelled, shooting away towards the border. He moved so fast he actually collided with two frost fairies hovering at the edge. Smothering her laughter with her hand, Tinkerbell darted backwards into the deep foliage.
"Is the dust okay?" Tinkerbell asked as Vidia flew up to her. Vidia nodded, clutching the satchel that Gale had dropped.
"Let's just hope it's not too late" Vidia said, flying back towards the Pixie Dust Tree with Tinkerbell in her wake. As they flew, two voices reached their ears.
"THE BLUE DUST!" Gale yelled
"TINKERBELL!" Periwinkle screamed.
