Chapter 8: Day's End

8:34pm: 26 minutes Before Closing:

Nothing eventful happened after all their friends left, there was just boring mundane work. Both Elliot and Olivia were sitting behind the counter sharing a pack of starburst and chatting.

"I just realized something," Olivia started. "Right before I went to go move my car you were going to say something to me, what was it?"

Elliot froze for a second, how could he forget to tell Olivia how he really felt about her?! Now was his chance and he was going to take it. He took a deep breath first. "Liv I really like you! I really like, like you!" he gave her a sheepish smile. "Not to sound like a cheesy afterschool special but I really mean it and even if you say no nothing can change how I feel about you."

Olivia just looked at him before smiling back. "This whole day I was nervous about what would happen if I messed this up but we feel the same way about each other. Ever since you broke up with Kathy I wanted to be with you but I didn't want to ruin our friendship. I want to be in a romantic relationship with you, so yes I'll go on a date with you!"

"Yes!" Elliot had a huge grin on his face and hugged Olivia and she did the same. They let go after a while and smiled at each other. Elliot rubbed the back of his head. "So…"

"So…?" Olivia repeated.

"Where would you like to go for a first date?"

"Coney-"

"Please don't say Coney Island," Elliot stopped her.

"Aww, why not?" She sounded like a little kid.

"Because if we go to Coney Island the guys will wanna come and they won't take no for an answer." Elliot said. "I was thinking of something more romantic."

"Okay," Olivia realized he did have a point. "What did you have in mind?"

"I was thinking a candle light dinner on the boardwalk at that seafood restaurant you're always talking about."

"But you hate fish,"

"I'll do anything for you," he told her truthfully. "Besides, they also have stake."

"That place is kind of expensive," she said.

"It sounds like you're trying to back out of the date."

"I wouldn't dream of it, but I don't want to burn a hole in your wallet."

Elliot shook his head. "Liv there's a reason why I've been working all this overtime and it's not just because of the game. I've been working up the nerve to ask you out for weeks and I wanted to take you some place special."

"That's so sweet." Olivia beamed.

They stared into each other's eyes and then in a fluid motion they both leaned in to kiss but they were interrupted by a man who walked into the store.

"Do you guys sell diapers?" he hollered. "My wife needs to change the baby."

The two clerks were taken out of their stupor and Elliot groaned in annoyance. "Yeah they're in the back, let me get them for you." He mumbled something inaudible and grabbed a step ladder to get the diapers on a high shelf. He handed the pack to the man below.

"Thanks kid," he took his item up to the front were Olivia rung up the price. He looked over his shoulder and grabbed a Twinkie. "I'll take this and a scratch off since I'm here."

"$7.75" Olivia told him. The man paid and then left.

Elliot went over to Olivia and was going to kiss her but she just looked at him. "The moment has passed, later."

"Fine," Elliot sighed but still kissed her on the cheek. He saw her face turn red and he casually walked away. He looked at his watch and saw it was almost closing time; he switched the sign on the door to closed.

Olivia felt her cheek. "I'm going to mop up," she walked to the back of the store.

"I'll take out the trash." he replied. Elliot started his chore when he heard Olivia screaming from the back. "Liv!?" he ran towards the back and saw Olivia standing in the doorway of the bathroom. "What happ-" he stopped when he saw a man slumped over the toilet with his pants around his ankles and a porn magazine. "Oh my God! Is he dead!?"

Olivia was panicked. "I-I don't know!? His penis is erect…check his pulse."

"This is disgusting!" Elliot said as he tried to maneuver himself to the side of the man. He put two fingers on his neck and checked his pulse but there wasn't one. "He's dead."

"W-what? H-how did he even get back here?" she was still shocked.

Elliot moved himself out of the bathroom. "Me and Fin let him use the bathroom, I didn't know he was still back here!"

"When was this?"

"When you and John went to get pizza."

"That was hours ago!" she shouted. "That was before we went to play ball, who knows how long he's been dead!"

He put his hands on her shoulders. "Liv just calm down, get your cell phone and call 911. We didn't do anything wrong and we'll tell the cops what happen."

"My dad is going to kill me!" she took out her phone and called 911.

Elliot closed the bathroom door, no need to keep looking at the dead guy. "This day was almost over…" he said to himself.

Olivia hung up the phone. "The police are on their way."

Elliot led her to the front of the store.

8:47pm: 13 minutes Before Closing:

Olivia stared at her phone still deciding whether she should call Cragen or wait till she gets home to tell him that there was a dead body in the store. It wasn't her fault but Elliot broke the rule about letting costumers use the bathroom. She was lost in thought when she heard the front door open; she looked up and saw it was two police officers. "NYPD, we got a call from this location."

"Yes I called officers." Olivia said. "My friend and I found a dead body in our bathroom." She led the officers to the back where Elliot was waiting for them. He opened the door and saw the dead man still in the same position.

"Jeez, what happen to this guy?" the cop asked.

"I don't know," Elliot answered honestly. "This guy asked to use the bathroom and I let him. We didn't know he was still back here until she went to get the mop bucket."

"How long ago did you let this guy use the bathroom?"

He thought about this for a moment. "Like 4-5 hours ago."

The other cop was looking over the scene. "Anything unusual happen before this?"

"The air conditioner broke today," Olivia said. "It was hot in here."

"I don't see any foul play, you kids did the right thing by calling us." The officer took out a notepad. "Names please,"

"Olivia Benson"

"Elliot Stabler"

"Stabler?" The officer repeated. "Your dad is Joe Stabler right? I worked with your father on a couple of cases." He looked over his notepad. "Anyway, you two are going to have to wait here for a while and give your statements to the SVU detectives."

"SVU? What's that?" Elliot asked.

"Special Victims Unit," the officer told him. "They deal in sex crimes."

"This is why you should study more." Olivia gave him a mock look.

"Wait, we didn't commit a crime!" Elliot defended.

"Relax," the officer told him. "It's just standard procedure, the guy's pants are around his ankles and he looks like he gave himself some self-love. Just wait for the detectives."

"Officer Quinn, escort these two outside!" he yelled to another officer. "And someone get the medical examiner?!"

8:58pm: 2 minutes Before Closing:

Olivia and Elliot sat on the curb outside the store; they watched a few police officers and the medical examiner walk in and out.

"This has been one weird day." Elliot noted. "Dana broke the TV and the AC, the Yankees lost and we found a dead guy in the bathroom."

"'We found a dead body?'" Olivia repeated. "I found the dead body, it was gross. I should kill you for letting that guy back there."

"If you kill me then there's no romantic dinner date." Elliot tried to make light of the situation.

"I might not even make it to that," Olivia groaned. "When my dad finds out about this he'll ground me for the whole summer."

"No way he'll do that," he tried to sound reassuring. "But he might fire me." It was his turn to groan. "All this and I wasn't sup-" he was interrupted when Olivia caught him by surprise and kissed him on the lips. He was surprised but he liked it and embraced the kiss.

While they were still lip locked the SVU detective had arrived and walked over to the young adults. He cleared his throat to get their attention. They both stopped kissing and had red faces from embarrassment, as if this night couldn't get any weirder.

10:05pm:

After an hour of talking to the detective and going through their day they were finally able to leave. There wasn't any foul play so no need for an investigation and the EMTs took the body out of the store. Olivia grabbed her backpack from behind the counter and walked out; Elliot was right behind her and locked up the store. They walked to Olivia's car.

"So you kissed me," Elliot commented.

"Yeah, but only to make you stop complaining." She teased.

"It was a great kiss,"

"You're a great kisser." She beamed.

"So are you." Elliot chuckled. Then there was s pause. "So…uh…I guess I'll see you on Monday."

"I can drive you home." She offered.

"Liv that's a whole different borough and it's late you don't have to do that for me."

"Let me at least drive you until we get to my house." She knew he didn't like taking the train very much. "You can take the F train from there."

"Okay,"

She unlocked her car and they both got in.

"You know after all the weird stuff that happened today at least I can say we weren't robbed." Elliot saw a bright side to this. "Today wasn't that bad and I got a new girlfriend."

"And I have a new boyfriend." Olivia started her car and pulled off from the Quick Stop.

The work day was finally over and in the end Elliot didn't mind that he came to work on his day off.
