We made our way down the hall and soon ended up outside of the west wing and into the core of the building. It was a large circular room with an even larger circle inside of it which I am to presume is the spire. We walked up to the large circle but there wasn't an entrance on this side. Twilight was very eager to go and see rune star, she was practically seeming with excitement. We mad dour way around the base of the spire and soon we saw an entrance. We walked over to the entrance and there were two unicorns with hoods on in black garments just like twilights. One male and one female
"Halt..."the male guard said.
"You need permission to see the wizard of the spire." Said the female guard.
"Does, uh... This count as permission?" I asked flashing them the badge on my armor.
"It does... You may enter. "they both said in unison as the doors creaked open and they stopped aside. I smiled to twilight who was still excited and we walked right into the tower. We looked around and the walls were covered in book shelves and paintings. In the center was a large rotating globe with the moon and sun rotating around it. We looked around and suddenly an old stallion in black robes stepped out from behind the globe and started walking over to us. He had a very long beard and seemed to be blind as his eyes were a milky blue and soulless.
"Ah... Hello young ponies... What a pleasant surprise to find such company here in my tower... Please come in, come in." Said the wizard in an old pony's voice. It was raspy and dry, he definitely wasn't as young as he probably used to be, but for a pony over 200 he sure seemed to be in decent condition. There was nothing wrong with how he walked or held his body up. He didn't limp or wasn't hunched over with a cane. He had brown fur and white long hair.
"Are you rune star...? The descendant of starswirl the bearded?" Asked twilight excitedly.
"That's true my dear... I am who you claim me to be. "he said. "You must also have been told by Meredith that I'm also over two hundred years old... That mare gives my youth too much credit... I wish I were two hundred again... Those were the days." He said looking back.
"How old are you really?"Asked twilight.
"The next month will mark my 471st birthday." He said. "Quite remarkable isn't it..." He said chuckling a bit.
"That's amazing. "said twilight.
"Indeed... Now, what can I do you young ponies for?" Asked rune star.
"Well..."I said
"Hold onto that thought. "he said cutting me off. "Let's move to somewhere more comfortable shall we... Please, upstairs if you will... It's more private. "Said rune star.
"Alright..."I said. "So how do we get up there?" I asked.
"Well there is a staircase over there, but its such a dreadful climb up, and I'm not as young and persistent as I used to be, so I've crafted a portal to bring me to and from the top of the tower... It's over here." He said walking over to a large metal circle on the ground. We walked over and watched as he stepped on the plate and it started glowing. He suddenly vanished in a flash and was gone. Excitedly twilight jumped onto the plate next... But nothing happened. She looked at it confused and tried jumping up and down on it a few times. She stepped off and there was another flash. Once the flash was gone we saw a note laying on the pad. I picked it up and read it out loud.
"Dear young whippersnappers... That's what I call young whippersnappers such as yourselves... Whippersnappers." I read rolling my eyes. "I've decided that I'm going to test you, it's not any fun looking for anything when you don't have to do a little work for it... So while I've taken my fancy shmancy portal you two are going to climb the boring old stairs... Should be fun... I'll see the both of you in my tower in an hour and twenty seven minutes. I'll have tea and crumpets waiting for you on your arrival. Yours truly... Rune star." I read.
"I don't get it... Why did he do that?" I asked.
"I had a feeling he'd be barking mad." I said throwing the paper to the ground.
"Hey... There's something on the back of the letter. "said twilight. I looked down and there was more writing. I started reading what it said.
"You shouldn't call an old stallion who's trying to have some fun 'barking mad'..." Read the note.
"Damn..." I said. "Well, the old stallion didn't take account of my wings" I said. I flexed my wings out and started flapping them furiously as I took off into the air. Or at least I should have taken off into the air...but nothing happened."that the... I... I can't fly."I said.
"Just flap your wings." Said twilight.
"What do you think I'm doing." I said. I even jumped up into the air to give me a boost but I just fell right back down without even fluttering or floating down. "Well... I guess it's the stairs." I said putting my wings back to my side. I let out a sigh and looked around for the beginning of the staircase. It was over to our left, and it spiraled up to the very top of the spire.
"We have to walk up all of those?" Complained twilight.
"I suppose so..." I said. "We might as well get going."I said w
Asking over to the stairs. Twilight followed and we started to make our way up the stairs step by step. It wasn't so bad at first, but then once we had spiraled around the tower a couple times and had gotten some real height it started getting agonizingly boring. I could see that twilight was starting to get tired and we weren't even halfway there. I looked up to see that there was still more tower left to go and I let out a deep sigh. Me and twilight sucked it up and started trudging on.
Me and twilight weren't massively tired or gasping for air, but our hooves started to ache and soar, even mine were killing me. At least we made it past the halfway mark, or what I presumed was the approximate halfway mark. Time pass by and we sucked it up and carried on up the stairs. After a while we finally came to the end of the stairs and happily rushed up to the top. We broke out through the opening and entered the top floor of the tower. Up here was a large room with a lot of interesting things in it. There were still bookshelves lining the walls and the ceiling stuck up like a cone. The ground was hardwood and laminated and there were a few windows which were huge with large red curtains opened up to let in some natural light.
There were shelves stocked with skulls, tomes, gems and other things. There were tables set up that were glowing with runes and symbols carved on them. There was a curved table that fit snugly with the wall stuffed with various beakers and other potion making things. They were all bubbling away and filled with strange and colorful liquid. A few stones laid on a table next to us with magic runes burnt into them and they were glowing. There was a large telescope sticking out of an open window. To the left was a fireplace with furniture placed around it. a few couches and chairs with a mahogany coffee table. Not far from that was a bed which had black sheets with stars on them. Over by the fireplace, sitting on a couch was rune star.
"Ah... Exactly one hour and twenty seven minutes... Welcome, please have a seat, warm yourself by the fire, I've made tea and crumpets." He said welcoming us over. We were tired so we welcomed walked over and sat down on the couch where there were in fact... Tea and crumpets. Twilight grabbed her cup of tea and took a sip.
"Mmmm... This is good." She said.
"Thank you..."said rune star. "It's chamomile... Your favorite twilight." He said.
"Wait what?" Twilight blurted out noticing the same thing I did.
"And earl grey for you crimson." He said. Me and twilight both looked at each other.
"How do you know our names?" I asked.
"Oh, I know a lot of things... But don't trouble yourselves over it... Please, have a crumpet... " he said offering us a crumpet. Me and twilight each grabbed one and ate it. They were lemon meringue with a bit of citrus frosting on top... They were freaking delicious.
"These are great..." Said twilight.
"Oh thank you dear... I've had a bit of time to perfect the recipe" he said.
"Yeah, it seems like it." I said.
"The the both of you are here from Equestria to solve this little dilemma were having here... Quite the predicament it is indeed."
"So can I assume you know every aspect of our lives?" I asked.
"Yes... It would be a good bet to assume that." He said. "Oh... On the topic of knowing lives... How's the princess doing?" He asked.
"What princess...?" Asked twilight.
"Princess celestia of course... Is she doing well, I haven't been to the alpha world is a long time." He said.
"Uhm... What?" I asked.
"Oh don't play dumb with me... I know the both of you came from a different world other than this one."he said. "The one you came from is the alpha verse, it's the main stem of all the other beta verses, and even delta verses." He said.
"Oh... Okay. Yeah... We're from a different world, how did you know that?" I asked.
"Oh, because I'm from that world too... I came to this one on vacation, it's been fun... But I might actually move back." He said.
"Vacation?" I asked.
"Oh yes... Just to get away from reality for a bit and have some fun." He said. "But it's been over fifty years now...I think it's time to head on back... But I can't leave until all of this hubbub over the missing mountains and the ships is solved." He said.
"So do you know anything?" Asked twilight.
"There is speculation going around that some sort of demon sea monster just ate it... Quite a funny tale isn't it... I can sure you that isn't what happened." He said.
"Do you know what happened?" I asked.
"Not entirely... But when the incident occurred I felt a slight ripple in the magical veil... So it could be transvoidal." He said.
" are you really that deeply connected with the veil?" Asked twilight.
"Of course... Void magic is my specialty after all." He said. " I specialize in ripping through space and time, manipulating matter and physics to my will... If I got bored of sitting on the ground I would just reverse gravity and take a nap on the ceiling." He said.
"That's amazing." Said twilight. "I didn't know there were such magics."
"Ah but there are... Before starswirl died he taught me, and only me the secrets to void magic, it's also one of the reasons why I can withstand such longevity." He said. "It's a lost magic, one you can't find in any book or anypony, except myself... And a book that I've written on the uses and practices of void magic."
"You wrote a book on it?" Said twilight excitedly.
"Yes... I can see you might be eager to read this book... But I cannot allow you, not yet." He said.
"Not yet?" Twilight asked curiously.
"No... But maybe sometime, I've been looking for a chipper young learner with great raw power to pass over the legacy of starswirll... He was the one who invented both time magic and void magic."
"He also created the first effective use of instant transmission and formed an unnamed magic using the four base elements of earth, air, water, and fire." She said.
"Very impressive... Not many ponies know that." Said rune star. "I can see being celestial student has really paid off."
"So what did you mean by all of that stuff?" Asked twilight.
"Well... Twilight sparkle, I figured that you... Might make a perfect second generation desciple." Said rune star.
"Are you serious... Really?" She said excitedly. "Don't you think crimson would be better suited for that?" She said seeming a bit regretful, she was feeling like I always get stuck with the good stuff because of what I am.
"Not at all..." Said rune star. "Look, I know about your friend." He said.
"You do?" I asked.
"Yes... I know what you are..." He said taking a pause.
"And..." I said leading him on.
"And I don't care..." He blurted out with a smile on his face. "You called me barking mad...plus you smell funny."he said.
"I... I smell funny?" I asked questionably.
"So, twilight... I would like you to take the book. I wrote on void magic, but... There is a condition." He said.
"What is it?" She asked.
"The book will only open up on a certain day at a certain time in the future... Out must wait until this time before it opens and you can read from its pages." He said.
"What day is it?" She asked excitedly.
"He'll if I know." He said. "But it will open... Eventually, here... Let me show you the book." He said. He held his horn up high and it started glowing a vibrant black with white sparkles like the midnight sky. On one of the shelves behind us a large leather bound book floated over and landed on the table. It was titled 'void' with the picture of a spiraling universe on the front all in black leather. The book was at the least, a foot thick. It was a huge boom and probably weighed like a ton.
"You want me to take this book?" Twilight asked becoming nervous at the size of it.
"Yes... It's every spell and trick I know, have been taught, or have created myself, along with leads into other tricks or spells." He said. "I understand that it is a big book." He said.
"So you expect me to carry this around with me until we get back to our own world."
"No of course not... You'd throw your back out, I'll leave it at your house when I go back to the alpha verse." He said.
"Wow..." I said, which is all I was really able to say. I was proud of twilight, and happy for her too.
"So... Now that that's out of the way, back onto pressing matters." Said rune star. "You still need me to tell you everything I know." He said.
"Yes, we need to get this done as soon as possible." I said.
"Well...if you want some advice, I can give that to you...but I don't know anything else beyond what I've told you." He said.
"Alright...well what's your advice?" I asked.
"Simple..." He said. " if I were you I would want to investigate where the third great horn used to be... See what you can find... It may lead to something important."
" are you sure... It supposed to be dangerous." Said twilight.
"No better place to start than at ground zero." Replied rune star. "We'd better wait though before we head out, your friends are going to want to came with us." Said rune star.
" what do you mean with 'us'?" I asked.
"Well I'm damn well coming too of course." Said rune star. "I want to see what happened too." He said. " then of course I might bring one or two students... Knight commander Merideth is going to join in on the fun too of course with an escort of four castle Templars and eight guards." He said.
"Are you sure you should come... It could be very dangerous." I said.
"Give me some credit..."he said. "Do you think I've lived this long just spending my days inside eating pourage and yelling at kids to get off my lawn...?" He asked making fun of me.
"I'm sure he can handle himself." Said twilight. "He is a disciple of starswirll, and starswirll fought and killed a flock of dragons when he was 175 years old." Said twilight.
"Granted I'm not that young, but I've got plenty of fight left in me." He said.
"Alright... I suppose I was wrong to think that." I said admitting defeat.
"Wonderful..." Said rune star taking a sip of his tea and taking a small bite out of a crumpet. " so we'll wait for your friends to get here and then we'll move out, in the meantime... It's getting late... You two should find a place to stay the night. There's a nice tavern not far from here that rents cheap." He said.
"Crimson, when do you think the others should get here?" Asked twilight.
"I think in about three or four days." I said.
"Actually they'll be here in 78 hours and fifteen minutes." Noted rune star.
"Oh... Well then, I guess they'll be here in about two days." I said looking back to twilight.
"Thank you for all of your help, it was great meeting you." Said twilight as we both got up. Rune star held out his hoof and we all shook hooves.
"No problem..." He said. "... Now, it's growing late, and I'm tired. So it's time for bed, good luck finding a place to sleep tonight, and this time, I'd suggest using the teleporter instead of the stairs." He said.
"Yeah, good advice." I said jokingly. He gestured over to it in the corner and we walked over to the teleporter. Twilight stood on it first and she was gone in a flash. I went next and suddenly I was engulfed in light. Once the light faded I was back down at the first floor of the tower with twilight. She smiled over at me and we started making our way out of the spire. We walked over to the doors and I pushed them open. We walked out and the doors magically closed behind us. The two mages from before are the ones who closed it. They were just standing there emotionless just like they had been before, I guess that's what they probably get paid for.
I shrugged it off and started to make my way out of the castle. We had to circle around the base of the spire before we found one of the corner exits into the circular rotary connecting the four wings. Once we passed through that exit we moved through a small garden before the rotary where we passed right through and back into the courtyard. We walked along the courtyard and made our way to the entrance of the castle. once we were off the castle grounds and moving through the streets we started looking for a place to stay. We looked left and right, but there didn't seem to be many places. Mostly stores and stalls.
"Hey... Look, I think I might have found us a place." Said twilight stopping and looking over to the right. I looked over and saw a large building with a sign out in front. The sign read, "The lucky Couple Inn" and it had at true of a mare and a stallion on either side of a large red heart with two arrows through it.
"Uhhh... Maybe we could keep looking?" I said nervously.
"I know it sounds strange, but its getting late and this is relatively close to the...wait a second." I said as I had an epiphany. "This place is close to the castle... And there's a sign in the window that says 'rooms now twenty bits cheaper'." I said.
"So?" Said twilight.
"That wis sold bastard..." I said recalling what rune star said. "He said that there was a place not far from the castle that rents cheap." I said.
"So, do you really think that he could help it, it was just good advice, and its probably the only place we can both find and afford." Said twilight.
"I still feel like this is all his doing... But whatever, I guess we have no choice." I said. I let out a deep sigh and started walking towards the door. I pushed it open and wade in with twilight right behind me. When we got in and looked around what we saw was definitely not what I figured it to be. From the sign out front I thought this place would be full of couples and lovers... I was wrong.
Inside there was a cluster of round tables, all of which had large stallions who some of which might even be guards. They were all sitting there drinking beer out of large wooden goblets. And all around them were mares... Mares in maid outfits serving them beer. There weren't any mares not wearing maid outfits. There was a bar and a roaring fire in the back. Some of the waitresses were even hitting on some of the guys... Then I noticed the piece de résistance. A large board in the back, labeled... "Girls". Running down it was a long list of names, all female names... With prices next to them. This is some kind of whore house inn.
"We've made a big mistake." Said twilight who was clearly shocked by the sight before her.
"Uhhh... I think we should keep looking around." I said.
"Well, we don't have anywhere else to go." Said twilight. "I think as long as we don't buy in we should be fine." She said.
"Hey there big boy..." Said a mare who creeped over to me and sent a shiver down my spine. She was wearing a tight fitting maids outfit with her hair tied back in a pony tail. She had silvery eyes with light brown fur and icy blue hair. "You look lonely, pay the right price and I can make sure you get a good nights sleep... Unless... Your not tired." She said with a smile. My whole face started turning red and twilight gleamed at me.
"Thanks... But no. I'm... Uh... I'm good." I said. She just shrugged and turned away.
"Your loss sweetie." She said walking away. I looked over to her and noticed her tail was propped up so everything was visible. I quickly averted my eyes and I'm sure twilight had seen it too since she blushed and shot away. I noticed that all of the mares had their tail propped up.
"Let's just go and get a room..." I said. Before we started walking over though both of our stomachs rumbled audibly.
"And maybe some food?" Suggested twilight.
"Yeah, that sounds good." I said. We started making our way over to the bar and saw that there was a stallion behind the bar cleaning glasses. It was somewhat releasing, but he was probably the owner of this... Exotic, establishment. We waved up to the bar and took two seats next to each other. The bar pony looked over and smiled. Then he looked at twilight and a strange look of excitement washed over his face.
"Oh, good evening miss... You must be here to apply for a job."he said.
"What!?" Exclaimed twilight. "N-no... Of course not, I just need a room for the night."
"Shame..." He said. " what about you sir?" He asked quickly shooting away from twilight over to me. "Can I get you a AGB special?" He asked.
"A...a what?" I asked.
"AGB, an ale, a girl, and a bed..." He said. "Only one hundred and twenty bits."
"No... Me and my friend are just here for a bed and some food." I said.
"Wow... You two are really boring." He said. "But money is money, how which room do you want?" He asked.
"Do you have a room with two beds?" I asked.
"Two... Two beds?" He said rolling his eyes. "Look buddy, what kinda place do you think this is?" He asked.
"I'm not even sure..." I said. "Some kind of perverted inn." I said.
"Hold your horses friend..."he said. "This place ain't perverted... It's a place of love."
"You've gotta be kidding me." I said under my breath.
"In this place a mare and a stallion can find each other and make sweet love." He said.
"Whatever, so you have any rooms or not?" I asked.
"Hmm, lets see." He said looking back under the counter. "Nope... Sorry pal, fresh out." He said.
"You've gotta be kidding me." I said attracting the attention of a few ponies.
"Relax friend..." He said soothingly.
"Please stop calling me friend." I said between his sentences.
"Look, you can still get a room... But there's a catch." He said.
"I don't think I like the sound of this." I said.
"If you want a room you gotta buy a gal, then you get her room for the night." He said.
"We've gotta buy a girl." Twilight exclaimed also attracting some attention.
"No... He's gotta buy a gal." He said. "There ain't any mares that swing your way."
"I don't want a mare to swing my way... I just want a place to sleep." Said twilight blushing furiously. Meanwhile I was burying my face into the counter trying to contemplate this predicament.
"Look, friend... I get that you ain't big on the whole thing, that's fine... Lots a guys come in here just looking for a gal to sleep next to... Ain't nothing tone ashamed of... Though, some of the gals are pretty wild end end up getting what they want anyway...it's all about choices my friend." He said.
"I can't believe that all of the choices I've made in my life have ultimately lead me up to this point and have brought me to this cruel place." I said under my breath.
"Well, that's great that you have a choice... But where am I going to sleep?" Complained twilight. "C'mon crimson, you gotta help me out." She said.
"Hey, you looking for a place to stay?" Asked a strange voice next to us. Me and twilight both looked over to see a stallion with grey fur and dark blue hair sitting down at the counter and having a drink. "I've got an empty room if you wanna join me tonight."
"Uh... No... No thank you." Said twilight somewhat nervous.
"Oh, sorry if I came across as a creep." He said. "I'm a city guard...also I'm married... So I won't try anything, In fact if my wife caught me at this place shed probably have my head and mount it over the fireplace." He said laughing a bit.
"So what are you doing here?" I asked.
"I'm like you two, I'm on a scouting mission for a suspect drug dealer in midtown and I've to nowhere else to stay for the night." He said.
"Is it really alright to do this?" Asked twilight looking at him but mainly directing her question to me.
"If you don't want to that's fine I guess, if you feel awkward about it then I don't blame you, if you want you can just have my room, it's fine... My job is to protect and serve." He said.
"No... I, thank you." Said twilight. "I'm grateful that you offered your room to me, but I don't want you to go without a bed tonight, so I guess we can share it." She said.
"Thank you." I said looking over to him and nodding. "We can help pay for the room since your willing to share it with my friend." I said.
"Don't bother..." He said. "It was a cheap room and I'm getting paid well for this job anyway." He said.
"Oh how touching..." Said the bartender completely ruining the moment. "Now what about you good sir?" Asked the bartender.
"Damn..." I said dreading this moment.
"If you want a room then you gotta but a girl... The list is over there." He said pointing over to the board of names. I let out a deep sigh and started looking over at the board.
"Oh god..." I said cringing at some of the names. Starlight...50, bloom...65, April...70, crystal...100. A lot of these girls were really expensive.
"The girls with red hearts by their names are already taken." Said the bartender. Most of them had hearts next to their names... Except for three. Starlight...50, Medussa...oh god, she cost 235 bits, she's out of the question. And finally the last name was. Girl at the bottom called May Breeze... She was also 50 bits. So it was a decision between May Breeze and Starlight.
"Uhm... Can I see the two mares?" I asked. The reason I asked is because it helps for me to look into their eyes, then I can read their emotions and intentions.
"Of course sir..." Said the bartender. I can't believe that this is really happening. "Oh Starlight...May Breeze, come here my sweeties." He said calling out. I watched as one mare sitting on a stallions lap looked over and started making her way. Then another mare who was serving beers finished the round quickly and made her way over. They stood next to me and looked over at the bartender.
"Yes master..." They both said in unison. This place makes me sick.
"This fine gentle colt is having trouble choosing between the two of you, he needs some visual assistance." He said. He practically just turned those two mares on me because they shot right at me and our eyes met. They both faced me and smiled.
"Hello, my name is starlight..." Said a light blue mare with short blonde hair and light blue eyes. she wore a hat on her head which was like a barrette. It was knitted tightly and green.
"And my name is May Breeze..." Said the other mare who had light orange hair also with light blue fur. Her eyes were emerald green and she had sparkling white teeth. I couldn't decide on looks and both of them kept their eyes closed as they smiled at me, so I couldn't read their emotions. I looked between the two of them. I looked back to twilight and she just gave me a nervous smirk.
" I choose... Uh... Starlight." I said ultimately picking my poison. She jumped and giggled and then hopped right onto my lap.
"Yay... This is going to be so much fun..." She said smiling. She hopped off me and the other mare waved away.
"Excellent choice, starlight is a rising star here and is full of energy." Said the bartender. I just sighed and rolled my eyes as I paid the bartender fifty bits. After that everything went down hill. Me and twilight got some food and drink. We both stayed away from alcohol so that it doesn't affect our better judgment. We ate our food and twilight started to lighten up to the guard who had offered her to share a room. He seemed like really great guy and she wasn't worried about it at all. His name was grey stone, he was a city guard like he said. Getting to know him made both twilight and myself more confident in trusting him. So I'm glad for twilight that she'll be able to get some good sleep. I'm not sure exactly how my night is going to be, but I just want to get some sleep.
The entire time we were eating our food before going to bed starlight was on my lap smiling. I was still in my armor, so she was just stroking my armor to no avail. Grey stone was generous enough to buy us dinner, he really was a great guy. I just wish there were more ponies like him in the world. It wasn't long until we finished our food and we went off to our rooms. I was nervous, very nervous and starlight walked beside me leaning up against me. We went upstairs to the rooms and grey stone and twilights room came up first. He opened the door with the key end showed twilight the room. The beds were exceptionally big, so it was a nice room to be in.
"Well... Good night twilight." I said.
"Yeah, uh... You too." She said.
"I doubt that." I said nervously sweating.
"Just... Don't do anything stupid." She said.
"I'll do my best..." I said as she went into the room with grey stone and the door closed. Now it was just me... And starlight.
"C'mon big boy... This way, I sleep down the hall." She said leading me down the hall. I followed behind her and tried not to look at her since her tail was propped up like all the rest of them. Once we finally got to her room she opened the door and walked in. I walked in too and looked around. It was a pretty big room with a large king sized bed. The sheets were all folded and tucked in neatly and there were a few pillows thrown on for decoration. I looked back at starlight nervously and saw that she was undressing from her maids outfit. Once she was completely out of her clothing she walked over to me. "Alright... Your turn." She said.
" my turn for what?" I asked.

All the pieces moved back to the doorway and started to heal back together. The door began reforming piece by piece as it soon reattached itself to the hinges and straightened out.
