Reid ended up spending the night and woke up to the smell of bacon. Reid got up from the guest bed and walked into the kitchen. "Good morning Emily. Good morning Holly. Where's Maddie?"
Emily tilted her head towards the living room. "She starts school tomorrow and has packed and unpacked her backpack for a week."
Reid walked into the livingroom and sat down beside the three-year old. "You excited about your first day of school?"
Maddie stopped and looked at the ground. "Will you come with mommy to drop me off and pick me up?"
Reid was a little taken back, but replied. "I don't know you'll have to ask your mommy?"
Maddie got up and walked into the kitchen. "Mommy can daddy come with us tomorrow?"
Emily was happy that Maddie had taken so well to Reid. "Sure Maddie."
"Maddie your going to be late." Emily said standing at the door.
Maddie ran down the stairs. "I'm coming mommy."
Emily laughed. "Well Beth is picking up Holly and taking her to school so we have a little time to spare."
"I'm not always late." Beth said from behind Emily scaring her a little.
Emily turned around. "Sure Bethany."
"How could I be late E, Holly said you had company that I would like to meet."
Emily turned to face Maddie. "Sweetie can you go get your father?"
Maddie nodded and ran to the living room.
Beth was shocked. "I can't belive you actually told her who her father is even I don't know."
Reid was pulled into the room by Maddie followed by Holly.
"Aunt Beth meet Spencer, daddy meet Aunt Beth." Maddie said.
"Nice to meet you again Dr. Reid."
Reid went to say something, but was interrupted. "Come on daddy we're going to be late."
Emily, Reid, and Maddie stood at the door to Maddie's classroom. "You ready to meet your teacher?"
Maddie nodded at her mom. "Yes, I am."
The trio walked into the room. "Hi I'm miss Ellen Ross and you are?"
Emily went to answer, but Maddie beat her. "I'm Maddie and this is my mommy and daddy."
Miss Ellen looked down at Maddie. "Nice to meet you Maddie. Some of the other kids are over there color would you like to join them."
Maddie looked up at her teacher. "No ma'am, is it okay if I read my book I brought?"
Miss Ellen smiled. "Sure."
Maddie pulled out the Little Princess and handed her book bag to Reid. Then she found a chair in the corner and started where she left off.
Miss Ellen was surprised. "One of you is welcome to go read her story to her so she doesn't get bored."
Emily laughed a little. "Miss Ross are you implying that reading is boring."
"It is if all you see are letters on a page."
Reid spoke this time. "Besides she doesn't like it when we read to her she gets mad."
"Well then I guess I'll see if maybe she would rather color." With that miss Ellen walked over to where Maddie was sitting.
"Honey wouldn't you rather go play then look at this book?"
Emily and Reid watch wondering what Maddie would say. "No ma'am, I want to find out who put the stuff in the attic."
Miss Ellen was a little surprised nodded and walked back over to where Emily and Reid were standing. "Is she actually reading the story or has she seen the movie or something."
Reid smiled. "She's actually reading the story."
"Oh, most of my students can't even read full words yet that's why I didn't think she could actually read the book."
Emily looked at the younger women. "That's fine miss Ross. If you don't mind we need to get to work."
"That's fine I'll see you when you come to pick her up.
Miss Ellen watched her class play minus Maddie who was still reading. "Class it's time for reading circle."
The kids cleaned up their messes and formed a circle. Maddie marked her page and put her book in her cubie.
"Today I'm going to ask one of the students to read our story." Miss Ellen announced.
Some of the kids looked a little nervous since none of them knew how to read. Maddie raised her hand.
"Yes Maddie?" Miss Ellen asked.
Maddie glanced at the rest of the class. "Can I read it?"
Miss Ellen smiled. "I was hoping you would want to."
Maddie walked to the chair that was sat in front of semi circle. Then she took the book of poems from miss Ellen. She turned to the marked page and read the poem.
Then miss Ellen spoke after she finished. "Now I'm going to give you a few minutes to draw pictures to illustrate your own poem."
While the rest of the kids were drawing pictures Maddie actually wrote her poem on a piece of paper. The rest of the kids handed in their drawings and told miss Ellen their poems and she wrote them down. Maddie handed in her's and went to read in her book. Miss Ellen read over Maddie's poem.
A world alone all by itself.
From dragons to monkeys and gardens hidden for years.
Books are an escape to the world that anything is possible.
Nobody questions the simple things that they hold.
People may not understand the reason to read them.
But, you never know what you will find in your own little world by opening the cover of a book.
"Maddie do you think you can come her for a second." Miss Ellen asked.
Maddie walked up to the teacher's desk. "When the other students go to p.e. I want you to come with me."
Maddie nodded and went back to her book.
Maddie followed miss Ellen through the school halls into the first grade room who were doing math. "Mrs. Daniels I have a student her you need to meet."
Mrs. Daniels walked to the classroom door. "What can I do for you Ellen?"
Miss Ellen smiled. "This is Maddie I want her to sit in on your class."
Miss Ellen left and Mrs. Daniels showed Maddie to an empty desk. "Guys this is Maddie Miss Ellen the k-3 teacher asked that she sit in on our class."
Mrs. Daniels pointed to a math problem on the bored. "Can anyone tell me what 3x3=?"
Maddie raised her hand. "Nine"
Mrs. Daniels smiled. "Do You know what 3x12=?"
Maddie answered. "Thirty-six"
Maddie stayed in Mrs. Daniels class until five minutes before school was out.
Emily was the first to talk to Maddie. "How was your day Maddie?"
Maddie smiled. "Mrs. Daniels is awesome."
Reid looked at miss Ellen. "Who's Mrs. Daniels?"
"I hope you don't mind I let her spend sometime in the first grade class.
"That was fine Miss Ellen." Emily said.
