A/N: Snow days are boring.
But at least I get lots of free time to write.
Enjoy :)
Chapter 11
I slowly opened my eyes. I began to panic. Where was I? I threw the light green comforter off of me and jumped out of the unfamiliar bed. I recalled the night before and calmed down as I remembered agreeing to stay at 's. I took a few deep breaths. I looked around the room and spotted something that wasn't there the night before. A red bath-robe hung from a hook on the back of the closed door. I note was pinned to the sleeve. I removed it and began reading.
I came in to invite you to dinner, but you were sound asleep. Breakfast and tea will be ready at 9:00 tomorrow morning. If you haven't already got one, you may borrow this robe for the time being.I trust you have all the essential toiletries. - Mrs. H
I grabbed the robe off the hook and wrapped it around my body. It was silky, like the one Sherlock wore the previous day. I wasn't sure how early it was so I crossed the room and picked up my phone. 8:47 AM. I grabbed my toothbrush, toothpaste, and comb out of my suitcase. Just as I opened the door and stepped out, Sherlock entered the same hallway from the next room over.
"There's the loo." He said without looking up at me. I began walking towards the door he pointed to, but before I made it in, he turned swiftly and stepped in my path.
"That's my robe." He told me. His voice was calm, though he sounded a bit annoyed.
"Oh." I wasn't sure what to say. "I'm sorry. She left it for me. You can have it back." I began pulling my arm out of the sleeve.
"No. It's fine. You can use it for now, but I must have a word with that woman." He stalked away, mumbling something about people touching his stuff. I watched him disappear around the corner and found myself staring. It seemed as if he didn't like me. Why would he? I probably reminded him of John. I entered the bathroom and di my usual morning routine. Afterwards, I exited the bathroom and headed down the hallway into the main room. I spotted the kitchen and went that way. Mrs. Hudson and Sherlock were seated at a table there. She motioned for me to sit.
Breakfast consisted of English muffins and jam. The tea was excellent. So much better than the tea I drank at home. We sat in silence until Mrs. Hudson finally spoke up.
"So what are you planning on doing?" She asked.
"Well I'm not really sure. My mom wanted me to come home, but I didn't want to pass up a great opportunity such as this. My first day of school is tomorrow. I just need to find a place to stay and my funds are running a bit low." I told her.
"A job shouldn't be too hard to find. There are plenty of shops hiring."
"I'll have to check on that." I smiled.
"And I'm sure she Eden could stay here for a bit longer if the need arises." Sherlock suggested. My jaw dropped. "That wouldn't be a problem, right Mrs. Hudson?" He didn't look up from his breakfast.
"Well...um..I guess not." She looked confused. He didn't seem like someone who cared much about others. This must have shocked her.
"Thank you for the offer, but I could never.."
"Oh come on. You need a place to stay and we're providing you that." He interrupted.
"Um, okay. I guess I could stay for a little longer."
"Well alright then."Said Mrs. Hudson. "I guess I should clean up that room a bit." I felt bad for her. I didn't want to cause her any trouble.
Once we were finished eating, Mrs. Hudson cleared the table. I changed into a new pair of jeans and a fresh t-shirt. Mrs. Hudson came in to clean up John's room and helped me unpack my things. She was very sweet about it. I still felt bad, though.
"I'm sorry," I apologized. "about this. I don't want to cause you any trouble."
"Oh don't mention it, Dear. I'm just a little shocked. Sherlock's been more anti-social than usual since he learned about John. Maybe having you around will help him get back to the way he was. You remind me a lot of John and I bet Sherlock feels the same way."
Once we were finished, she left with my dirty laundry and Sherlock's robe, leaving me alone in my fathers old room. I grabbed my book and sat on the bed. I read for a few minutes until I heard a knock at the door.
"Come in." I called. The door opened slowly and Sherlock entered. He was carrying the robe Mrs. Hudson had taken just a few minutes before. I closed my book and placed it on the bedside table.
"You can keep using this if you'd like." He placed it on the bed next to me.
"Oh. Thank you." I replied, sheepishly. He nodded and began backing away towards the open door. "Wait!"
He stopped.
"What is it?" He asked.
"Well...I-I was just wondering. Why did you suggest I stay?" He looked down to the floor. He was silent for a moment, but eventually replied.
"I think you know why." He told me. It was true. I did know.
"Is it because I remind you of John?" His eyes grew sad and I feared I wasn't correct. I was afraid I'd reached a touchy subject and he'd get upset. But he didn't. After a few seconds of panic, he spoke up.
"Precisely." He smirked, turned, and exited the room, shutting the door behind him.
