Yay! Welcome new followers and reviewers!

The darkness swam and shuddered as she became aware of the light shining in her eyes. She was aware of her eyes reacting to her new found consciousness, moving under her lids.

"Ah, look who's awake," that voice, she remembered it, clicking in her head as someone who she couldn't trust. How could she? He was so obviously aligned with Batman and she wrecked his little charity ball.

Her eyes snapped open to see Bruce's own shining dark eyes looking into hers, how did he find her? She was a good hours walk from his apartment when she was attacked.

"How did I get here?" she squinted at the man before her, his eyes so similar to the Joker's own.

"I heard you were attacked after you left, I should have driven you home. I'm sorry," he looked so down cast then that she felt bad for not trusting him earlier.

"It's fine," Kayla frowned as she looked up at the handsome billionaire. "How did I get here?"

"A police officer found you in an alleyway, shot," Bruce looked uneasy before reaching into his pants pocket and pulling out a card, "they found this on you."

Kayla accepted any piece of information eagerly, and was beyond shocked when she saw it was a Joker card, "what happened?"

"They believe you were attacked by the Joker," Bruce looked down at his clasped hands, "they think he formed a fascination with you when he attacked my party."

Kayla inwardly snorted, no he formed it far earlier, "no, it was the mob. The Joker told them I was responsible for their bosses death."

Bruce arched a brow, "so now he's getting the mob to pursue you? And he got them to leave you alone after you were shot." He was deep in thought, this girl was somehow a player in Joker's little game.

"Sure, something like that," she was forming the events of the night in her head. She was lured into an alleyway, she managed to kill one man before she was shot, and the Joker saved her from the last man. She would have to go back to the alley and see what the crime scene looked like. Was there more blood than hers on the ground? Oh, she hoped the Joker killed him. She was pissed at the clown but she remembered his eyes when she fell, he was shocked. The Joker wanted to play with her, to ruin her… he did not want her dead. That would end his fun.

"How long has the Joker been targeting you?" Bruce knew there was something she wasn't telling him, but what?

"I'm not entirely sure, but something did happen," Kayla looked up, into those warm brown eyes, "after the party he was in my apartment, he wanted me to join him. I tried to fight back, but his men overtook me."

He was confused to say the least, what did she do to start this obsession in the lunatic? Why was she just now telling him? What could he do to protect her, because in the end the Joker would beat this girl?

"You need protection, you need to stay somewhere safe," Bruce began pacing around the hospital room, "you aren't safe in at your place. Do you have any relatives out of state that could take you in?"

Kayla smiled as she put her hand on Bruce's when he passed her, "I'll be fine, for now he doesn't want me dead. I can take a few self defense classes."

Bruce looked down at her hand, now chipping blue nails were gently pressed against his slightly tanned fists. He had to do something, if she wouldn't leave Gotham than maybe he could prepare her for her stay, "I'll teach you."

Kayla cocked her head, red messy curls fell around her face, "teach me what?"

"How to defend yourself, I'll teach you how to fight," he smiled tightly, "I took some classes myself, and until you heal I want you to stay in my guest room in the pent house." Bruce knew he was going out on a limb and that he barely knew this girl, but he was Batman and he felt he had to protect her.

"A-are you sure?" Kayla looked up in shock, "I don't want to impose." Why was he helping her? Hell, she'd not look a gift horse in the mouth.

"I got you in this mess, let me help you get out of it," the man was soon talking to the doctors, asking for her release. Of course, who could deny the Bruce Wayne anything? And so she was soon in his car, wrapped up in bandages and a robe to help cover the hospital gown. At last he was helping her into a plush bed, Alfred assisting all the while asking her if he could get her anything; "A blanket, tea, book," was all rapid fired at her as he gently lifted her legs into the bed, drawing the sheets around her. She felt like someone dying more than a victim of a gun wound, the two were so doting. Bruce had finally left to work while Alfred started to tidy the large house. It seemed the old man was a jack of all trades, he had switched her bandages, telling her of his time in Burma and other exotic places Kayla could only dream of.

The girl nodded off to the sounds of his distant footsteps, feeling safe and comfortable for the first time in a long time.
