Okay, so I lied… Joker chapter is next. It didn't flow quite right, so I figured I'd write a Bruce chapter so it isn't such a skip.
Bruce checked in on the girl almost four times the rest of the day. He was glad to see she was able to sleep after such an experience. It was possibly the fourth time, he wasn't aware of how many times he had looked in on her, when he decided to stay longer than just a quick glance to see if she was still breathing. She had an almost ethereal look to her. While Rachel always reminded him of a fairy, beauty in a small, mischievous package, he thought Kayla almost looked like an angel, tall, statuesque, and somehow divine. He rolled his eyes at his own mental comparison, he knew her less than a full day and here he could inadvertently trust her with his secret and possibly his and Alfred's lives.
She groaned slightly in her dream; face scrunching up as she curled in on herself. She seemed to be having a nightmare. Bruce was no stranger to those, so he decided he would do what he wished others could do for him, and gently touched her shoulder. He was not prepared for an elbow to his face. He back peddled a few steps to distance himself from the thrashing girl. He breathed a sigh of relief when she finally emerged from her dreamland.
"What? Bruce?" Kayla stared at him through blurry eyes, still hazy from sleeping for a good ten hours.
He straightened up and pulled a chair next to her bedside; now that she was awake and both alone he could get things out of the girl.
"I didn't want to wake you, it just seemed you were having a nightmare," he knew he was giving her a look similar to the one his father gave him after the well incident.
"Yeah," Kayla felt embarrassed by her fear, even as a kid, "mannequins just always scared me. I was back in that alley but the dummies were attacking me. No matter how much I fought back I couldn't break free. You saved me from them too, thank you for waking me up."
Bruce nodded, fears were always unexplainable, "how did the fear start?"
"I'm not completely sure," Kayla frowned as she looked to her still shaking hands, "I remember a distant cousin of mine locked me in a room full of them. He told me a story about how they came alive every full moon."
"And let me guess, it was a full moon?" Bruce smiled gently at the girl, amused the strong woman could be frightened by something so harmless, then again so was he.
Kayla laughed then, "of course. I hide under a cabinet until his mother found me, she was not as amused as he was. I know they can't hurt me but I have nightmares sometimes and the ones in stores still send a chill down my spine.
Bruce nodded before looking around conspiratorially, "I'll tell you my oldest fear if you keep it a secret." He was assured by a then solemn looking nod from her, "bats."
Kayla stared at him seriously for a moment before she broke down in laughter, Bruce joining. He noticed the noise attracted Alfred who was snooping by the half open door. "Bats?! Really, I wouldn't have guessed. What happened to you to make you fear them?" He had an attentive audience now, Kayla sitting forward all ears, and Alfred watching like a hawk.
Bruce felt comfortable by the openness of the girl, the fact she was really listening unlike all the fake women he had to socialize with. So he told his story, and she listened, she held his hand when he got to his parent's death. That was when Alfred left; Bruce could faintly hear him walk away.
"I'm so sorry you had to go through that," she smiled at him, "don't worry your secret's safe with me."
Bruce patted her hand as he stood, "I never told that to anyone, Alfred and Rachel already knew, I never had to tell them anything."
"Because they're your family too, they lived it with you and already understand. It's nice to tell things to a stranger."
Bruce nodded, she was a stranger, though he could tell they may be becoming friends. With a quick farewell and a promise to show her a few simple moves the next day if she was feeling up to it.
Hope this was nice! Finished the day up! Next will be Joker chapter, and I like it. I like making Kayla two faced… so sweet around people she's manipulating but put her with Joker or someone she wants to kill then she's tough, ferocious, and "righteous."
