Chapter 30

Brennan entered their new home bearing a fruit-covered cheesecake, her favourite. She'd picked out her own favourite, because today, she'd achieved something she hadn't thought possible. "Elena? Booth?" she called in a happy voice.

Booth had been resting on the couch, but sat up when he heard her voice. Elena came running from her bedroom and ran right into her mother's arms.

Booth however, wasn't so fast. During their first three months in DC, Booth had kept watch over his family like a hawk. When the adjustment period had passed and Chief Hardy had confirmed that the threat was no longer a reality, he had started looking for a job. True to his word, he hadn't applied for another job as police officer. Instead he'd found a job as an auto mechanic. He didn't make much money and there was lots he had to school himself in, but it brought home the bacon. He knew that Bones had noticed that it put quite a strain on his back and ribs, but he refused to listen to reason. The situation they were in was mostly his fault, so he had decided to just grin and bear it.

Brennan kissed her daughter and smiled broadly at her. "I have a wonderful surprise, sweetheart. Where's your dad?" Elena called for her father and eventually, Booth walked into the room. Brennan walked up to him and kissed him. "I brought this, because we have to celebrate," she told him as she showed him the cheesecake.

"Cheesecake?" He knew she didn't like any kind of candy or sweet, baked goods, so when she was the one bringing home something like that, she had something to celebrate allright. As he went over the possibilities in his head, his smile grew. "No...?" He felt so proud of her, he was almost certain he was right about this. "The Jeffersonian?"

She nodded, full of excitement. "I got the job!"

Booth took the cake out of her hands and put it down on the coffee table. He pulled her into his arms and lifted her into his embrace, twirling her around in the living room. He put her down on her feet and rested his forehead against hers. "I am so proud of you."

"Thanks," she whispered. She looked into his eyes for a moment, then couldn't contain her happiness anymore and just kissed him, her arms around his neck, holding him tightly. "I never thought they'd take me. Do you know that they took me over a college professor?" Her eyes twinkled. "I just - I can hardly believe it."

"Darling, you're a genius. Of course they took you over a college professor. You love your job, you were practically born to do this. You're patient, precise, detailed... you're exactly what they are looking for."

"I hope I won't disappoint," she said, but she knew she'd do her very, very best. "I can start next week."

"That is wonderful," Booth smiled at her. "Let's cut the cake."

"Cake!" Elena exclaimed and put her hands in the air enthusiastically. They all sat down on the couch and Booth quickly made his famous hot chocolate as Brennan cut three pieces of the cake.

They all huddled together and Booth couldn't stop himself from kissing her cheek several times as they enjoyed each other's company. He was very - very - proud of his Bones.

Booth showered her with his love and his pride, and at that moment Brennan felt bad. She'd just got the job of her dreams, and Booth was stuck in the garage. He wasn't unhappy with his job, but he didn't enjoy it like he'd enjoyed being a cop. He'd done exactly what she asked from him, but she realised she couldn't keep asking it. She wanted him to be happy, to feel the happiness that she felt.

"So," she said, "Now that I have my dream-job, I think we need to talk about how you're going to get yours."

Booth leaned back and looked into her eyes, "You don't have to do this, Bones. I can continue working in the garage."

She shook her head. "You deserve to be happy, too. You've tried, Booth, I notice that. But this job doesn't make you happy."

"But it keeps you safe. Both of you. I... I don't want to put either of you in danger again." To himself he had to admit that he missed it, but could he really do it? Go back to being a cop? That had almost cost him his family.

"I know that, but I also know that it was a lesson and you learned a lot from it. There's different kinds of law enforcement. You talked about the FBI. They're bigger than the police, have more safety measures, are probably better prepared. I think you'd be safer working with them, if you can get in."

"Thank you," Booth whispered as he leaned in, his arm sneaking around her waist as he pressed his lips against hers until they could hear a familiar little voice. "Eeeew!" Booth chuckled and rested his cheek against Brennan's. "Come here, little monster."

Elena made a face but climbed onto her father's lap, anyway. Brennan smiled and tucked her daughter's curls behind her ear. "Such a pretty monster we made," Brennan smiled.

Booth hugged his daughter closely to his chest. "Yes. She's more of a princess than a monster, though, most of the time." He rested his cheek on top of Elena's head, softly rubbing her back.

"Can we eat cake, now?" Elena wanted to know. She didn't care a lot about the reason, as long as there was cake.

"Go ahead, honey," Brennan chuckled. Their little girl had been doing well. They'd found a school for her, and she'd already made one new friend. Even before finding a school, though, Elena had insisted on visiting a few gyms in the area. When she'd seen one of the current senior national team members train at one of the gyms, Elena had made up her mind. Now that Brennan had got the job at the Jeffersonian, they could actually afford to let Elena take gymnastics at her preferred gym.

They sat together as the family they were and continued to eat and talk. The late afternoon turned into evening and they went their seperate ways. Brennan went to give Elena a bath and have a shower herself afterwards, while Booth made dinner. They allowed Elena another small cup of hot chocolate and afterwards tucked her into bed, reading another chapter from her favourite book.

As they exited their little girl's bedroom, Booth pulled Brennan along with him to theirs. When the door closed behind them, he pressed his lips against hers. "Let's celebrate... a few more times?" Her soft giggle told him she agreed wholeheartedly and he continued to prove his love, devotion and admiration to her throughout the night.

So, they've ended up in DC. They're safe, they're happy, and they still love each other, of course :). In the epilogue, you can look forward to Elena's birthday wish coming true, and we get to check in on Angela, among other things. There will also be a big surprise we have in store for you... Please leave us some words on this chapter!
