14 October 31 / November 4 1992
Jennie woke up late in the evening with a curse, her brain still groggy, and winced as she sat up.
"I'm so not going on more girl's night out!" she promised herself aloud and groaned as eh slowly made her way downstairs and had a light meal; a slice of toast and orange juice.
"Hi pretty girl… oh is that a letter?"
Sunshine hooted and Jennie retrieved the letter and her owl stole the last of her toast; the bird was obviously a bit annoyed that she had had to sit in the kitchen and wait.
Dear Jennie
Things are scary over here… Tonight Ron, Hermione and I were on Nearly Headless Nick's 500th death day party, and when we left I heard a hissing voice from the walls, it said it was out to kill and hurt, and I was the only one who could hear it! Why is that? Am I mad? It is not good to hear voices, even in the magical world…
Also, Lockhart is a fool and I think we learn zero in his classes; he is like a peacock, all colorful and glorious when he talks, but then nothing happens… I miss you and feel like I really, really, really need a hug… I think you are right; I am starved for affection, he he, I love you Jennie you rock!
Love Harry
Smiling fondly at the little rushed but oh so cute love declaration, Jennie hugged the letter close to her before getting serious.
"Hearing voices… well boy that isn't right, you've got that one nailed down… guess some researching is the next thing on my list…" mumbled Jennie as she took paper and pen to reply.
Dear Harry
I get that things are scary; they seem scary when I read what you've written, but don't you worry I'm sure nothing bad will happen to you this year – I forbid it!
Now, to be a little more serious, if you hear more voices, go to Professor McGonagall or owl me straight away, okay? And no, you are not mad, I think there is something speaking that perhaps only a few can hear, and you might be one of them.
Ah, well, I don't give much for Lockhart, so don't feel bad about not liking him and his lessons, he's the type of man who talks a lot but does nothing, just like you say yourself – well spotted there little man!
My sweet little darling I miss you as well, and I'd love to hug you right now and I love you very, very much – don't you dare forget it!
Now, I'll do some digging around and see if I can find anything about hearing voices; if I find anything I'll tell you, so don't be too frightened Harry; I'm sure there is a simple explanation t this.
Take care and please stay out of trouble!
Love you
Jennie
She finished of her letter with a heart after her name and just when she sent Sunshine out the window, another owl came flying in; it landed elegantly on the table and screeched once before offering her its leg and Jennie curiously took the letter and unfolded it.
Dearest Jennie
It was such a pleasure to hear from you and I do apologize for nor replying earlier but I have been terribly busy with getting Draco to school, managing the house and other domestic things – you know how it is.
I would like very much to meet for lunch, and I'm delighted that Lucius likes the idea as well; he is not that fond of letting me off on my own the darling man!
If you can give me a date, I will make sure that I am available for lunch and talking, perhaps we can meet at a more neutral place than Diagon Alley; it is such a rushed place to dine at, with all the people moving around, I'm sure you get my drift, woman to woman.
With hopes of hearing from you soon,
Narcissa.
"Oh dear…" mumbled Jennie and slapped herself, quite shocked that her little play had gone so well.
"Shit! What do I do?! She'll for sure know I'm not a witch… and why did he buy my antics? Don't they check up on new acquaintances?!"
Moaning, Jennie selected a new paper and wrote a new letter.
Dearest Narcissa
Oh I'm delighted to hear from you; I thought you might think me irrelevant!
Ah yes of course I understand and there's no need to feel bad for having much to do.
Someplace neutral sounds very good in my ears, perhaps Lloyd's, if you have heard of it? If not, it is a lovely small place on the countryside which offers a variety of food and drinks. What do you say? Or do you have a nice place in mind?
I'd be glad to hear from you soon so we can decide on a date,
Jennie
Groaning at the turn of events, Jennie tied the letter to the owl's leg and watched as it soared out in the windows and away in the night.
"Well fuck! I need a cover story… and I need to sleep again!"
####
Four days later, Jennie stood by the entrance to Lloyd's and waited for Narcissa Malfoy; she had donned a modest dress in cobalt blue since the place was after all non-magical, and she hoped that the dress would scream sophisticated, or else she was as good as dead.
"Jennie?"
Jennie swooped around and beamed at the blond woman, kissed her cheek and went on:
"Narcissa! How lovely to meet! I love your dress! How are you?"
The other blonde smiled genuinely and Jennie gestured for the door and n they went while Narcissa replied, sounding happy and non-suspicious:
"Oh thank you, it's new actually, and I'm well thank you. What about you? Lucius didn't lie when he said you were a beauty!"
Jennie was a little put off by this, and Narcissa must've noticed for she laughed merrily.
"Now, don't tell me you husband doesn't have eyes for others?"
"Oh, I wouldn't know about that since I have no husband", smiled Jennie and now it was Narcissa who looked put out.
"You don't… oh well, there is nothing wrong in being unmarried either, I just assumed…well, no matt, no matter! So tell me, where are you from?"
They sat down by a table and where offered menus and a list of several wines.
"Ah, you see Narcissa; I have something to confess… I don't know what Lucius has told you, but I'm not a witch, not that is has anything to do with me being unmarried, but still, I'm not part of your community", said Jennie since she figured it was best to be honest from the start with Narcissa; the other woman seemed to be very sharp minded.
To her surprise, Narcissa laughed aloud.
"I I know, Lucius knows as well; we were impressed by your little stunt move in Diagon Alley; you handled the situation really smoothly! So, mind telling me why you acted as if you were a witch?"
Jennie laughed a little.
"Well, the thing is I didn't; I just acted politely since Lucius seemed to be of a finer upbringing."
Narcissa laughed again.
"Oh he'll be delighted to hear this! Now, tell me, how are you guarding?"
They spent the next two hours talking; although Jennie never once said who her protégé was.
