Chpt 19: Shadowclan
-
I first heard the news while I was out on a stroll with Jet. Twist called me by my earpiece as I watched Jet tear around the park then make a keyhole turn on her foot and race in the other direction. It was a wonder how her robot leg could keep up with the speed it had to match.
Static buzzed in my ear and I touched it to activate the speaker. Twists voice filled my ear, he sounded scared.
"Kaiya! You gotta get back here now! Something bad has happened!" He said.
"Huh? What's wrong Twist? You sound scared." I asked calmly, picking up a stick for Jet to try and get.
"I'm not scared! I'm just…gah, just get over here okay? I need you!"
I rolled my eyes, boys these days. "Sure I'll be there soon." I muttered before ending the transmission.
Jet was eyeing the stick I held. I watched her carefully before chucking it away. She raced after it and caught it in her mouth before it hit the ground.
She jogged over to me, holding the trophy in her mouth.
"You're getting faster, Jet! That was impressive. But we gotta go now. Apparently there's trouble at HQ."
I raced her over to Skies, you can guess who won, then mounted up.
"Hup-pup!" I said, patting her platform which she sat on.
She wagged her tail and bounded aboard, auto-magnetic locks, locking her leg and speed regulators to the bench, an insurance so that she won't fall off when Skies goes over the speed limit, if there was one.
I radioed Twist in, "I'm on my way, Twist. But you owe me a walk with Jet."
"Thanks, Kaiya." Came a reply. I could hear shouting in the background noise.
"Everything okay?" I asked.
"Yeah, look, just get here as soon as you can. I'll explain everything."
I revved Skies harder in reply and he climbed up to 300 miles per hour instantly.
We would be there sooner than Twist thought.
When we arrived, I immediately headed for Blakks office to ask Twist what the problem was, though I figured it out as soon as I got there.
Nacho, John Bull, Locke and Loade, Twist and CC were all standing arguing with each other.
I paused in the doorway, unable to figure out the situation, until I noticed the main person was missing.
"Where's Blakk?" I asked, my voice buried underneath the noise.
"Hello!" Again I was ignored.
I shook my head and clapped twice. That got no-ones attention either, but that wasn't the point.
The door opened again and Jet raced in. I clapped again and she barked, loudly.
The noise died just before the first echo.
"Right, let's try that again. Where's Blakk?" I asked, my hand resting on Jets head.
"Kaiya!" Twist broke away from CC and headed in my direction.
"What's going on?" I asked him.
"Blakk's missing." He said calmly, "CC said he was going after the Lightwell, to try and destroy it and the Shane boy. But he never came back."
I watched him impassively "You do know the Lightwell is on Shadowclan ground?"
"Yeah. CC managed to get away, but Blakk we don' know."
I looked at CC. "How'd you manage to beat the Shadowclan?"
CC smiled and tried to look heroic, "I used a Darklight, a ghouled Phosphoro slug."
"Where can I get some?"
"Blakks supply."
I grabbed Twists arm, "You're coming with me."
Twist looked confused as I pulled him along.
"Wait." Someone growled.
I turned to see Locke facing me, "Who gave you permission?"
"I don't need permission. Blakks not here."
Twist looked at me, "But then… who's in charge?"
"Me." Nacho stepped forward.
"What!? No! It's me!" Locke challenged Nacho.
CC stepped forward, "Uhh, men. It's clearly me."
I pulled Twist along behind me, "Dunno. Let them figure it out themselves."
"You do know they'll start fighting."
"That's what I'm hoping. Come on. You need to show me where those Darklights are. We are going to go help Blakk."
"You do know that's stupid, right?"
"Yup. Now let's go!"
After we had loaded up on Darklights and other ghouls, I briefed Twist my last minute plan. Ensuring he understood, we left on our mechas.
"Are you sure about this, Kaiya?" Twist drew up next to Skies.
I nodded, "As long as you cover me with those Darklights, I can get Blakk back."
"How are you going to find him?"
"Skies can scan for a tiny DNA trail. That should be sufficient."
Twit looked at me, clearly not believing a word, "Seriously?"
"Yes. Plus the tracker I put in his shoe should help too." I allowed myself a sly grin.
He smiled and shook his head.
"You know he won't be happy if he finds out about that tracker."
"What tracker? I don't know of any tracker!"
Twist just chuckled as we speed off into Shadowclan territory.
We had barely passed the border when Skies picked up the tracking signal.
I halted and nodded to Twist, who in turn hopped off his ride and mounted mine, behind me. He put his arms around my waist and I stiffened at the close contact. However it was strangely comforting.
I looked back at him to see if he was ready.
He nodded once and we continued going, Skies not making no sound.
Soon enough we arrived at the lip of a crater in the ground. Below us was Blakk, surrounded by Shadowclan.
A shiver went up my spine and I felt Twist tense.
I looked at him. "Let's go" I whispered.
Twist nodded and loaded a Darklight into his blaster, took aim and fired.
The Darklight created a huge explosion of blacklight, sending the Shadowclan running for cover.
I raced Skies down into the crater where Blakk was.
This was as much of the plan I had told Twist about.
Quickly adding in some extra details to Skies coding, I grabbed Twists blaster from him and flipped off Skies.
"Kaiya!" Twist called as my mecha ran ahead, grabbing Blakk in his jaws, then racing in the opposite direction.
I smiled and waved at the receding figures, before running back the way I came.
I had commanded Black Skies to take Blakk and Twist out of Shadowclan territory, deposit them safely then return for me, while I ride on Twists mecha, luring the Shadowclan away from them.
I sprinted towards the place of the mecha.
Something hissed beside me and I ducked as a lithe figure jumped at me.
Shadowclan!
At least they were following me and not Twist.
I ran on, dodging Hop Rocks and Armourshelts in my bid to reach the mecha.
The mecha came in sight just as a tail snaked out and grabbed my foot, tripping me up.
"Oof!" I gasped as all the air was pushed out of me.
Scrambling around I found myself surrounded by Shadowclan, green eyes narrowed and teeth bared.
I scrambled backwards as they parted, letting an even bigger one through. This one wore a crown shaped helmet, clearly a sign of leadership.
He began to speak in their strange way of hisses and I slowly loaded a Darklight into Twists blaster.
I kicked out my foot in an effort to distract them, then fired the Darklight into the air. The Shadowclan immediately fell back, screaming shrilly as I pulled myself up and ran towards the mecha.
As soon as my hand touched the handle I was filled with confidence. I leaped aboard and started the hyena up, before charging at the on coming creatures. They scattered and I aligned myself with Blakks tracker trail, then hit the gas.
I hooked Twists blaster to my belt and drew out my throwing knives as I closed in on Blakks signal, which appeared to be emanating from behind a rock-face.
Turning the corner I saw Skies surrounded by Shadowclan and Twist trying to control Skies.
I almost smiled at the comical scene.
Blakk was sitting behind Twist, trying to keep the Shadowclan at bay.
"Twist!" I yelled as I threw him his blaster.
He caught it deftly, instantly loading and firing another Darklight.
He was now down to three.
However, Blakk got distracted by me calling Twists name and in his second of distraction a Shadowclan grabbed his arm.
"No!" I cried, hurling on of my knives at the pair, just before they vanished, the knife along with them.
There was no time to stop, I pulled up alongside, Twist and jumped onto Skies.
"Do I have to go back on my mecha now?" Twist asked.
I looked back, seeing the mecha crash into a pile of rocks.
"Only if ya want too." I added, "Hold on. We're getting out of this dump."
I twisted the throttle and all three of us raced away from the feline figures.
Once we were clear of the Shadowclan, Twist asked the question I had been dreading.
"Where's Doctor Blakk?"
I sighed and looked at him, "I have no idea."
