Slugterra Fanfic
Chpt 24: The Race to Recovery (P2)

Decided to try 3rd Person Perspective for all characters, see how it goes

Twist trudged off down the corridor, feeling mixed thoughts towards taking Jet for a walk. He didn't want to go back inside Kaiyas room, the very thought of her asleep in a deep coma was just too much for him to handle.
But his legs didn't listen to him, they continued in dragging themselves in her direction.

Eventually he reached her door, where he had been half an hour ago. He lowered his head and fell headfirst against the door, the guards gone as their shift was over. He raised his arm to his forehead and stood there alone, tears running down his cheeks.
He could taste the salty tears in his mouth and feel the wetness on his cheek.
He shakily took in a breath and wiped his eyes on his sleeve, glancing around to see if anyone was watching, before slipping in quietly.
He wiped his eyes once more before he looked at the form in the bed. It had moved again.
Now it was propped up on one elbow: one hand holding a photo and the other had a dog tucked under it.
Twist froze, his brain unable to process what he was seeing. Kaiya was sitting up, awake.

He tried to speak but all that came out was a strangled sound of astonishment.
Jets ear flicked in his direction but Kaiya did not notice.
Twists mind was racing. All his hope had been shattered, eaten away by the increasing amount of time Kaiya stayed in that coma. He had almost given up, the machines steady reading his only glimmer of light.
But how? How had the machine not picked up on her waking up?

Twist pushed the thought aside, his body and mind fully functioning again.
"Kaiya!" He called as he sprinted towards her. Her head spun around and she winced from whiplash. The photo fell from her hand, forgotten.
Jet leaped out from underneath her arm as Twist collided with her, pulling her bruised frame into a deep hug, burying his face in her hair, breathing in her warm friendly fragrance. It was as if a huge weight of doubt had been lifted off his chest.
The tears were flowing freely again and his body shook with huge shuddering sobs of relief. She was alive!

Kaiya just sat there looking shocked as he hugged her, her arms pinned by her sides.
"Can't…breathe…" She managed.

Twist immediately loosened his hug and stepped back awkwardly, his cheeks burning in embarrassment.
He looked at her surprised face, her big wide eyes and her shocked expression.
"Kaiya, I'm sorry! Did- did I hurt you? Are you alright?" He instantly began beating himself up for forgetting she had been in a major crash.
"Uhhh…" She just kept staring at him, her expression changing into confusion.
"Kaiya..?" Twist asked cautiously.
A terrible thought came to mind 'What if she can't remember anything?'

"Kaiya! It's me! Twist! Your best pal!?" He grabbed her shoulders tightly, desperately looking for a sign of recognition in her dark brown eyes, "Kaiya.."
His tone lowered and he stepped back "You don't remember me… Kaiya, please. I need you, please remember me…"
Kaiya opened her mouth, her eyes narrowing in suspicion.

"Kaiya, please remember me, please! I need you! I can't work for Blakk alone, I need you with me. I need your temper, your attitude, your selfishness, your humour, your friendship. Please Kaiya!" He came and kneeled by her bed, taking her hand in his.
She snatched it away, tearing his heart even more.
"Kaiya, you can't just forget me! Or Jet or Nicole or Skies. What will happen to them!? Please, you're the only thing keeping me here in this goddamned place! You're the one thing that's keeping everyone here! You're my reason for living!"

"Twist, what are you-" Kaiya began before she was cut off by Twist.
He brought his lips up to hers and kissed her forcefully, full of sadness, anger, frustration, mourning and everything else he had locked up inside him, washing over her.
She just stayed there stone still, her heart monitor escalating.
They stayed like that for two full minutes, but it felt like forever for both of them.

After what seemed like eternity, Twist finally stopped, his familiar mischievous smirk on his face as he stepped back.
"Always wanted to do that." He stated, closing his eyes to relive the moment.
However, his daydream was cut short by a powerful punch in the stomach and a raging "HOW DARE YOU!" and he fell to the floor.
"Oooowww" He groaned lying on the floor, clutching his stomach.
He opened an eye to see Kaiya glaring down at him, the trademark scowl on her face.
"Don't ever do that again, unless I say so" She growled, trying to keep her face stern.

"Glad to see you're back to normal" He quipped as he heaved himself up.
She eyed him warily, fists still bunched.

"Relax, I'm not going to do it again…unless you want me too." He added a sly look.
"Forget it, Prince Pain-in-the-Butt."

He approached her again, climbing on the bed with her and drawing her in for a hug. She leaned away at first and struggled out of his grasp, but the more he persisted the less she struggled, until she finally gave up and laid her head on his chest.
"This doesn't mean anything" She mumbled, sulkily, his heartbeat echoing in her ears.
"Suuure" Twist drawled, wrapping her arms around her chest and stroking the cuts on her cheek.
She batted his hand away but let him keep his arms around her. Jet, who had been watching the whole thing unfold, decided she wanted in and hopped on the bed, much to Kaiyas delight.

"I don't think this bed is big enough for the three of us." Twist stated, narrowly missing being whipped in the face by Jets thin tail.
Kaiya looked around, finally calming Jet down, "You're right, for once."
Then she shoved him hard, nearly pushing him over the side.

"Woah! No you don't! Come here you!" He managed to right himself and grab her arm, tickling her stomach.
"Hey! Ow!" She protested. Twist immediately stopped at the sight of her rubbing her arm in pain.
"Kaiya, I'm sorry! Are you okay?" He asked, resting a hand on her shoulder.
"Yeah, I'll-ugh- I'll be fine." She grunted.
"Geez, what happened to me?" She asked, studying her arms and body.
Twist looked astonished, "You mean, you can't remember the crash? Or the Train? Or Skies?"
"Who? Wait, what crash? I WAS IN A CRASH!?"
Twist was shocked but he quickly regained himself, "I'll explain later." He dismissed the subject.

"Oh, And Twist?"
"Yes?"
"Did you really mean all those things you said before?"
Twists eyes widened and he started blushing.
Kaiya took the hint, "Okay then, we'll come back to that later."
Then she lay her head against his chest and fell asleep again with Twists arms around her.

And that's how Nicole found them.
