Chpt 27: More than meets the eye
-

Skies head smashed down on the cold and dull metal floor, the red light in his eyes flickering out of existence as all the energy disappeared from his body.

Twist, who had been cringing as Skies raced towards him, straightened up and kicked the dragons lifeless head, a triumphant smile growing on his face.

"Nicole!" He crowed, "We did it! Your electro-magnetic thingy worked!"
Nicole's grinning face popped out from a section of the wall. She had managed to override the power-lines in the wall that Skies had ripped open and used a device which had sent the pulse straight towards the charging mecha beast.
She and Twist high-fived as Blakk walked over calmly, holstering his Harbringer Firestorm.

His face wore a grim smile, no doubt he was already calculating costs to repair damage.

Meanwhile, behind him, all the guards were looking shaken and relieved such and ordeal was over. Twist knew how they felt.
Looking down at the armoured beast that lay next to him, he had to gulp at the razor sharp claws and the gruesomely jagged tusks, sprouting from either side of the huge, blade-filled jaws.
Kaiya had certainly outdone herself.
Thinking of his crush, he remembered he needed to see how she was doing. The shard embedded in her eye would cause plenty of problems if it hadn't been dealt with immediately.
And knowing Kaiya, she was probably sulking somewhere in her room, trying to fix herself without proper medical care. Twist had to admire her persistence to try and do everything by herself, declining help when she needed it.
"Come on, Jet. Let's go drag Kaiya to the doctors." Twist said light-heartedly.
"Need any help?" Nicole had overheard and broken off from her chat with Blakk.
Twist waved goodbye, "No, I've got this," before sprinting down the corridor.

Twist knocked once on the door before going inside, he wanted to give her a warning but not let her get away or arm herself.
"Yeah?" Came Kaiyas voice as he walked in.
"Hey Kaiya, do you wanna go to the medical bay to get that eye of yours seen?" Twist asked, walking over to where she was lying on the bed.
"Hmm? Oh, I already got it looked at," Kaiya rolled over to face Twist, she had a bandage over one eye, "The put me on some anesthetic and pulled it out. It wasn't actually stuck straight in my eye, more or less, it had slid into the corner."

Twist was taken aback. Kaiya had actually gone and accepted help without persuasion?
"Uh, Kaiya….are you feeling okay?"
"Yeah, why?"
"Because, you seem different. You've gotten all your memory back, right?"
"Most of it, yes."

Twist studied Kaiyas face. It had the same bored expression on it but it seemed cold, like a mask. There was no true feeling display.
None of her fiery attitude, her witty comments, they wariness in her eyes was dull and the pale scars ran across her face like cracks. Even her recklessness had weakened. A month ago she would be riding Skies like a rodeo bull, now she let her friends do her work
She wasn't the same person he had fallen for.
"Well?" Her impatient voice cut through his thoughts.
He didn't know what to say so he blurted out the first thing on his mind, "I..I…I just don't think you're the same person I met anymore. You've changed."
"What do you mean I've changed? Sure I got pretty beat up from the train crash but I haven't changed that much? What's the matter, pretty boy? Am I not your dream girl anymore? Well get over it."

She stood up and glared at him and he was taken aback by how much darker the stare was. It wasn't bright and fierce and challenging, it was silently furious and evil. Even her tone had changed; she spat out every word and taunted him beyond low.
Twist tried to remain calm, "Look, it's not you physically, it's your attitude. You used to be fun-loving, independent, reckless, daring, sly, sarcastic, wary; I'm only scratching the surface of your personality. I think you haven't remembered everything. You've forgotten who you are exactly."
Twist hadn't meant for his words to sting, but the look on Kaiyas face said otherwise. Her stony mask cracked and she slumped back down on the bed, closing her eyes and burying her head in her knees.
Twist came over and sat next to her, carefully putting an arm around her.
"Kaiya? What's wrong?" He asked, pulling her onto his chest
She didn't answer, she just leaned against him, her face hidden by her hair.
"Kaiya" Twist cooed as he pushed her hair out of her face. She just snapped at his fingers.
He laughed and pulled back, softly hugging her as she started to squirm, trying to get out of his grip.
"Forget it. No-one can break my hold!" He said, before Kaiya jabbed him in the ribs hard, escaping while he lost his hold.
"No-one, huh? Then who am I?" She grinned triumphantly, scooting backwards and away from him. The familiar light was in her eyes again.
"Good to see you're back. Now, answer the question." Twist sat opposite Kaiya, cross-legged as Kaiyas face darkened again.
"Promise me you won't tell anyone what I am going to tell you, okay?" She asked menacingly.
"Promise."

Kaiya leaned backwards, bringing her knees close to her, "Truth be told, I don't know who I am."

Twist was surprised, he hadn't been expecting an answer like so, "What do you mean, you're Kaiya"
"I'm not sure anymore, especially after what the doctors found."
"What'd they find?"
"This," Kaiya handed Twist a small brown envelope. "Inside is a contact lens, the iris colour is green. It's the only reason the shard didn't make me blind."
Twist pulled it out, he could barely see it. The iris was a cool, fresh green, the colour of Kaiyas eyes.
"So what? You aren't actually green eyed? Then what colour are you?"
Kaiya tapped her glove and the lights brightened. Twist could see her good eye was green but as she took of her bandage he could see her other was brown. A light hazel.
She replaced the bandage, "You see? I've been wearing contact lenses this whole time. Why? I have no idea. Not mention some of my memories don't add up to…well…Slugterra. And now you come along and say that I'm not who I used to be. In short, I don't know who I am, who I used to be and who I'm expected to be!"

She ground her teeth in frustration as Twist came over and hugged her, then picked her up bridal style and headed for the door.
"Let's get started then." Twist smirked.
"What? Oh no you don't!" She yelled, elbowing him in the chest and wriggling out, landing on her hands and flipping out of range. She adopted what she called, the 'Black Dragon' attack stance and watched him.
"See, you're doing it right already!" He dusted himself off, "Now, try and attack me."
Kaiya smirked, "With pleasure."
