Life had been bliss, Stevie couldn't express how happy she was with things at the moment. Kate had taken some personal time, which Stevie was pleased about but she was also working hard to prove herself as the cop she knew she was. Her relationship with Smithy was going great and her friendships were back on track. Life was good, that was until she walked into work on a warm Saturday morning and saw the blonde sitting in her office, like the last few months hadn't happened. Stevie moved to her desk and placed her bag down and switched her computer on, pulling her phone out she sent a text to Smithy to warn him of his ex fiancé's return, he wasn't in until the night shift but she didn't want him finding out from anyone else. "DS Moss" Kate called "A word please". Stevie took a deep breath and rose to her feet and headed to where the woman had walked back into her office. "Shut the door Stevie" she spoke. Stevie did as asked before turning back to her superior officer "It's great to see you back Kate, how have you been?". Kate smirked "Cut the bullshit Stevie, I'm not going to sit here and pretend you weren't shagging my boyfriend". Stevie tried to cut in but Kate cut her off "So here is what is going to happen" she rose to her feet and moved a file to the desk "The day Smithy kicked me out, I had a little rummage through his phone, hoping to find something to humiliate you with but among the filth you had sent him, I also found this" she opened the folder and pointed to the transcript "A text message exchange between Smithy and Stone, does the name Jason Devlin mean anything to you?". Stevie gulped "I don't understand". Kate laughed "I thought you would say that, I have done a little digging and it turns out, your beloved Smithy beat Devlin to near death" Stevie cut in "That's not true". Kate laughed "Oh come on Stevie, don't be so naive". Kate closed the file "Now, you are going to end things with Smithy, pack up and leave and never look back". Stevie sighed "I can't do that". Kate sniggered "Oh but you can Stevie, because if you don't, not only will Smithy and Stone lose their jobs, I will make it my mission to see Smithy rot in a cell for the rest of his life". Stevie shook her head "You wouldn't do that to him". Kate smiled "A few months ago you would of been right but now, I would happily watch him loose everything, shut the door on your way out DS Moss".

She had watched from outside the briefing room as Smithy had spoken to his officers, giving them the evening briefing, once they started to file out, she slipped in. "Hey gorgeous" he spoke upon noticing her "I got your text, how has it been?" he asked, stuffing papers into files, he turned to her and seeing the tears escape her eyes he moved towards her "Babe, are you okay?". She shook her head "Did you attack Devlin?". He looked confused "Where has this come from?". She sighed "Smithy, please be honest with me, I need to know" he took her hand "What difference does it make now? It was a long time ago". Stevie sighed "She has a file Smithy, about Devlin. Kate has a file and if I don't leave, you will go to prison". He nodded "That's fine Stevie, I will do my time and pay my dues, so long as you will be waiting for me". Stevie squeezed his hand "I'm sorry Smithy, I can't be the reason you go back to prison" he cut in "You wouldn't be Stevie, I made my choice that day and I would do it again, I will always protect you". Stevie pulled her hand back "No, I'm sorry Smithy, we are over, we have to be over. I will be gone by the time you get home tomorrow, I am so sorry for everything and please always know, you are the person who has taught me what love is". She pecked his lips and he took her hand in his "Don't, please don't do this Stevie". She pulled from him "Don't make this harder, you know this is what has to happen. Goodbye Smithy".

Smithy remained sat at his desk for the next few hours, he was angry and upset. He had cracked open a bottle of Whiskey from his locked cabinet, it had been a Christmas present from Jo that he had never got round to taking home. He glanced up as Callum appeared in the door way, "You alright mate?" he asked. Smithy sighed "Piss off Stone" before taking a swig from his bottle. Callum pointed to the bottle "You won't find any answers at the bottom of that thing". Smithy slammed the bottle down "No, cause its making me feel a damn sight better". Callum nodded "What's going on? I know Kates back but I'm sure that's no reason to be sinking that". Smithy rose to his feet "Stevie is leaving, she is leaving me and leaving Sunhill". Callum laughed and Smithy glared at him "I'm glad my misery is amusing to you". Callum stopped his laughter and responded "Oh it's not Smithy, the fact you are sitting here getting pissed instead of stopping Stevie walking out on your is hilarious though". Smithy glared at him and Callum walked to the door "So are you going to sit there and get shitfaced or are you going to go and stop the woman you love from walking out of your life".

Callum had driven, he had told Smithy he would be over the limit and he wasn't really in the right frame of mind to make any form of an argument. The two men climbed from the car and headed to the front door. Smithy had pointed out that her car was still there, which was a good sign she was still here. Callum knew both Smithy and Stevie could be unpredictable and thought it best to accompany him in, until he knew they were both calm enough to handle the difficult conversation hanging over them. Smithy dropped his keys to the table in the door way and headed into the living room, the house seemed empty. Noticing an envelope on the fireplace, he headed over to it. He vaguely heard Callum say he would check upstairs. Ripping the letter open, he glanced over the words

Smithy,

I have never really understood this whole love thing but please know you were the most important person in my life. I could not imagine not seeing you everyday, telling you I love you and watching your rubbish impressions of celebrities I have never heard off. I am so sorry for all the problems I have caused you and I know the decisions I have made probably seemed selfish but everything I have done has been for you. Please don't hate me, I love you. Do not come into my room, please call for help.

Forever yours,

Stevie xx

Smithy read the letter, he was confused. Hearing Callum's voice, panic ran through him.

"Smithy, get an ambulance".
