The two men sat in the family room of St Hughes as the Sunday morning hours began to tick by. Smithy could not erase the picture of Stevie lifeless body laying in a pool of blood on her bed. Callum had gone into robocop mode, he had ripped the bed sheets from under her and wrapped them round her wrists, attempted to get any form of a response from her. Smithy on the other hand, had shutdown, barely even managing to radio for an ambulance. Since arriving at the hospital, they had been rushed into this little room and left to sit with their thoughts. He had registered Callum attempting to get some form of a conversation from him but he wasn't in the right mind to talk. Hearing the door open both men jumped to their feet. "Is she OK?" Callum asked. The doctor pointed to the chairs "Take a seat" Callum sat down. Smithy shook his head "No, tell me if she is alive?". The doctor nodded "She is, she is awake but very weak". Smithy rested down into a seat behind him, the doctor sat opposite him. "I understand you are Miss Moss' partner? Ideally I would rather speak to next of kin" he asked. Smithy interrupted "I get that, she don't really have any one else though". The doctor nodded "She also said that and has given permission for me to update you, we have stabilised her, the nursing team is just finishing some checks and she will be assessed by our psychiatric team, you should be able to see her in about an hour". Smithy sighed "Okay thank you".

"Miss Moss, how are you feeling now? Are you comfortable?" the young nurse asked as he read over her notes. "I'm okay, just really tired". He smiled "That's to be expected. Obviously, when you arrived our main concern was to tend to your wounds and deal with the medication you had taken" he smiled "Stevie, are you aware you are pregnant?". She shook her head "I had no idea, if I'd known, I would never of" her voice trailed off before she moved her hand to her stomach "Will the baby be okay?" she asked. He smiled "I have a machine outside, we can do a scan now".

Smithy paced the room, he had found his voice and had been to the reception desk and shouted several times, even being threatened with security if he didn't calm down. Callum sighed "Would you sit down already mate". Smithy glared at him "He said an hour, that doctor said I could see her in an hour". Callum nodded "I know Smithy, they ain't doing this out of spite, she is obviously still with the shrink, just sit down, I'll grab you a coffee". Smithy shouted "I don't want a fucking coffee Stone. How could she do this?" he asked sinking into a seat, tears finally escaping him "She knows how much I love her, how could she be so god damn bloody selfish, does she really care that little about everyone around her". Callum nodded "Yeah, cause that's why she has done it Smithy because she is selfish and obviously nothing to do with what she has been through. That ain't the Stevie you love in there. It's the frightened, fragile person you and Kate have turned her into, so lose the blame game attitude before they let you see her".

"Hi Stevie, I am Dr Self, Debbie, do you understand why I am here?" the dark haired woman sunk into a chair next to Stevies bed and smiled. Stevie nodded but gave no verbal response. Debbie opened her pad and took out a pen "Okay, I am going to ask a few questions, just to determine what your state of mind is". Stevie again only responded by nodding her head. Debbie smiled, a genuine smile that instantly put Stevie at ease. "Okay, Stevie, did you intend to end your life?". Stevie nodded and Debbie jotted in her pad before continuing "Can I ask why you felt you wanted to do that?". Stevie sighed "I don't really know where to start, it's a long story". Debbie smiled "I'm in no hurry Stevie, you can take as long as you need and share anything you want". Stevie had explained the last couple of years of her life, leaving out the details of what could land Smithy in prison. Debbie had listened and made notes, only speaking to let Stevie know she was still taking in what she was unloading. As the story came to an end, Debbie smiled "How are you feeling about Smithy now?" she asked. "I love him" she replied "I really love him". Debbie smiled "And how do you feel about Kate?". Stevie sighed "I feel guilty, I have put her through so much but I can't let go of Smithy, he is the only person who has ever loved me". Debbie nodded "What are your intentions now?". Stevie sighed "In all honesty I have no idea". Debbie jotted a few more things down "Okay, how would you feel about going home, do you believe you can keep yourself safe?". Stevie placed her hand gently to her stomach "Yes, I don't have a choice now" she smiled "I have my baby to look after". The doctor smiled "That's good. I'm going to go and have a chat with my colleagues and I will come back to see you shortly". Stevie smiled "Thank you".

Smithy paused outside the room and turned to Callum "I don't think I can do this, I have no idea what to say to her". Callum smiled "Well maybe try listening mate, she obviously needs help". He nodded "Yeah, she does but what if I ain't the person to help her". Callum sighed "Of course you are, If you love her, as much as you say you do, you make sure you are that person Smithy". Callum moved to the door and knocked before turning back to him "I'll come in with you".

The knock sounded the room and Stevie used all of her strength to sit up in the bed. Callum entered the room first and walked over to the bed. Smithy stayed in the door way, he hadn't even attempted to make eye contact. Callum held her hand "How you feeling Stevie?" he asked. She didn't really know how to answer what seemed like such an easy question, she nodded "I'm okay" quietly slipped from her mouth. Her eyes moved back to Smithy "I'm sorry Smithy" she whispered. His eyes shot to hers and she whimpered "I'm so sorry". He moved over to her and pulled her into his body "No Stevie, you have nothing to be sorry for, you look at me" he moved her to face him "This is not your fault, none of it is your fault and we are going to sort it, I promise you I will sort this and me and you we are going to get through this". Callum smiled "I'm going to give you a bit of time" before heading out the door. Stevie took hold of Smithy's hand "I was so scared about spending my life without you Smithy". He ran his hands gently over her bandaged wrist "Stevie, I love you so much, I will never willingly leave you but I need to know you will never try anything like this again, you need to promise me, because seeing you laying on that bed, I can't be the reason you don't want to live and if being with me will push you into it, I need to walk away and let you be the amazing person you were before I fucked you up". Tears ran down her cheeks and she wiped the back of her hand across her eyes "Smithy, I can't take back what I have done but please believe it wasn't you that has fucked me up, you are the only thing that has kept me going, I am a big girl and I got myself into this, I made the choices I made because I am nothing without you" he interrupted "Stevie you are everything, you are amazing". She sighed "Smithy, I needed to protect you from Kate and she wanted me gone with no chance of coming back and I would do it again without hesitation and if you can't handle that Smithy, well that's tough because I will always put you above me". He gently kissed her lips and smiled "I'm going to go to Meadows and tell him the truth about Devlin, if Kate has nothing over us then we can be together, I will do my time Stevie and then we can move away and start again". Stevie shook her head "You can't do that Smithy, you can't go to prison, I'm pregnant". The shock on his face was priceless and normally she would of ripped him to shreds but now just wasn't the time. "Pregnant" he repeated and she nodded "Is it okay?" he asked gesturing to her flat stomach. She nodded "Yes, they have done a scan, I'm six weeks. Smithy, I didn't know, I swear to you, I wouldn't of" she stopped talking as tears fell swiftly from her eyes "I know, I know you would never hurt our baby Stevie" he smiled.

They had spoke for the next half an hour or so, until the doctor had come and said Stevie needed to get some rest. He had promised he would be back to see her in a few hours with some clothes but right now he needed to deal with the one thing standing in the way of him and Stevie living happily ever after. "Callum" he spoke as he approached the man in the hospital cafeteria "I need your help mate". He was going to take Kate down if it was the last thing he ever did.
