Stevie had never felt like this, she was unsure how she had got here but none the less, she was here in hospital, after taking a serious amount of prescription tablets and cutting her wrists. This hadn't been a cry for help, this wasn't even because she was depressed, she wasn't depressed. This was the only way out she could see, a way to save Smithy from prison, to stop Kate hunting the man she loved and to stop Smithy putting his whole life on the line to be with her. A faint knock sounded the room and Stevie sat up to see the doctor walking in. "How are you feeling?" he asked. "I'm okay, a bit drowsy" she replied. "Good, we will be keeping you in this evening, to monitor you and the baby and then you can go home tomorrow morning". She smiled "That's it?". He nodded "You will need an appointment with a nurse to change your bandages in a few days and you will be referred to a psychiatric clinic for a follow up appointment". She nodded "Okay, thank you". After the doctor left she rummaged in her pocket for her phone, Smithy answered on the second ring, she relayed the information the doctor had given her and he had agreed to pick her up in the morning.

Smithy hung up the phone and glanced to the two officers sat opposite him. "You both ready?" he asked, Callum nodded. Jo sighed "I would always help Stevie, I don't like being put in this position though". Callum sighed "If the shit hits the fan, we are going to take the flack Jo". Smithy smiled "We just need to make sure you get her in the right place, Stone and I will do the rest". Jo nodded "Fine but you best treat Stevie right after all this". Smithy smiled "Jo, I love her, in a way I never thought possible and I will make sure she never has to be in a dark place like that again". The three stood up and left the room, now Smithy just had to pray it worked.

Jo glanced to where Callum stood just away from Kates office and she took a deep breath before knocking gently "Sorry to interrupt Mam, Superintendent Meadows needs to see you". Kate sighed "Thanks Jo" before grabbing her phone and leaving the room. Jo watched her go before sighing as Callum walked towards her "She took her phone, it's in her pocket". Callum sighed "Text Smithy, he can deal with that his end". Callum pulled some papers from his vest and smiled "You are doing the right thing Jo". She nodded "I know". Callum smiled "Go and fill them in on Stevie being in hospital" he nodded to the group of CID officers before he slipped into Kates office and shut the door. He moved straight to her computer, Smithy had told him the password and luckily she hadn't changed it. He didn't have time for any setbacks.

Smithy glanced at the text from Jo and back to the two other men in the room, Jack sat in his chair and Neil leant by the windowsill. "Stevie" he gestured to his phone "They are letting her home tomorrow" he spoke before slipping his phone away. "That's good, maybe you should take a few days off whilst we investigate the allegations you have made regarding Kate". Smithy nodded "Yes sir, I would like to be at home. Kate has put Stevie through so much, I just want to give her my support". Neil nodded "Of course, please let Stevie know we are thinking of her". Hearing the knock on the door, Smithy rose to his feet, already knowing who was the other side and that he needed to cause a scene. Jo's message had thrown a spanner in the works but he had to get that phone. "Thanks Smithy" Jack smiled before calling for the person knocking to enter the room. Smithy shook both men's hands, as if ready to leave, turning and seeing Kate, he didn't need to act, to put on a scene, fury filled his body. The image of Stevie lying lifeless in a pool of blood, Callum trying to stop it pouring from her wrists. Smithy stormed towards Kate and pushed her hard against the wall, "You happy now?" he shouted "She nearly died because of you and your pathetic lies". He slipped the phone from her pocket and into his, as Jack and Neil pulled him back. "Smithy, take it easy" Neil said.

Jo rested onto the desk next to Terrys chair and sighed "Terrible news about Stevie eh?" she spoke. Mickey looked over "What's up with her?" he asked "She phoned in sick this morning". Jo nodded "She is in hospital" she replied. Mickey moved over and Jo continued "Attempted suicide last night, Stone saved her life". Terry cut in "Surely not, she is always so happy and upbeat". Callum cut in "You can never tell what someone is truly going through" he nodded to Kates office "Apparently that bitch had something to do with it, but I ain't one to spread gossip". He nodded to Jo and she rose to her feet and the two uniformed officers left the room, "Its all riding on Smithy" Callum smiled before the officers walked down and into the busy canteen.

Neil had filled Kate in on Stevies current situation. Kate had acted concerned but quickly turned herself into the victim. Smithy had shouted and gave Jack a simple choice, either Kate is transferred or he will be resigning. Jack had said he was prepared to hear both sides of the story and had followed Kate to her office, to retrieve her file. Smithy just needed to pray Callum was done. He removed the memory card from the phone and snapped it before putting it into his pocket. He made sure to carefully place Kates phone into the chair she had been sat in before heading for CID. "How is Stevie?" Terry asked as he headed inside. "She ain't in a good way mate, completely deflated" Smithy replied "I know me and Stevie did wrong but that woman has made her life hell for months and believe me, I'll walk before I work in the same station as her". Feeling the hard shove from behind he spun to face Kate "What the hell?" he shouted. She pushed him again "I know you have screwed me over" she shouted as Neil pulled her back. Jack sighed "DI Kenley my office now". She backed away and towards the door, Jack followed. Mickey rose to his feet as Neil went to leave "Is it true Gov?" he spoke and Neil replied "Not now Mickey". Smithy glanced round where several officers now looked on "Come on Neil, your officers deserve to know that their DI has pushed and bullied a DS so much she attempted to kill herself last night". Neil glared "This isn't the time or the place". Grace stood up "Is that true Gov?" she asked. Neil nodded "Stevie is in hospital and we are investigating the claims of bullying". Terry rose to his feet "Gov, I'm with Smithy, either Kenley goes, or I walk". Neil glanced round as Banksy, Mickey and even Max stood with Smithy. He watched Grace move towards them and he sighed "Grace". She shook her head "I'm sorry Neil, I can't work under someone who has treated a friend like that". Smithy watched as she moved behind him and he smiled at her before looking back to Neil and speaking "Neil, if you ever cared for Stevie, you would be stood with us too".

Smithy stood with Callum out the back of the station, the two officers were struggling to focus. It had been over an hour since he had made a stand with CID. An hour since Kate had gone to speak with the two most senior officers in the station. The two glanced up as Jo headed over "She is packing her stuff, transferred as of tomorrow morning" she spoke. Callum laughed "Ding dong the witch is gone, it's all done with, we won". Smithy remained in silence. Jo glanced at him "Yeah I guess so, let me ask you a question though Smithy, do you know how far is too far when it comes to protecting Stevie?". Callum cut in before Smithy could respond "It's not like they sacked her, Stevie nearly died Jo, doctors said ten more minutes and they wouldn't of been able to save her, so let's remember why we did this". Jo nodded "Oh I do remember, I remember Smithy and Stevie having an affair behind her back and you covering it up. Let's not pretend any of us are innocent in this Stone. All of this is on you Smithy". Callum glared as Jo walked away "Harsh much Jo" he shouted. Smithy sighed "She is right Callum, I should never of got involved with Kate knowing I was in love with Stevie and I owe her an apology for that".

"Kate" he spoke as he headed to where she packed her stuff into the boot of her car. "Piss off Smithy" she responded. "I don't want to leave it like this" he spoke. Kate sighed "What did I ever do to you?" she asked "Or did you just see me and think, oh yeah let's play with her life". Smithy sighed "Look, I have come to apologise for the affair and our relationship, I should of been honest from the start". Kate laughed "You and her are welcome to each other but are you ever going to trust a relationship built on lies, does she know you nearly got me fired today, that you set me up?". Smithy smiled "I have said my piece" he moved closer "But know one thing, I would do anything to protect Stevie, so when you get in that car, just keep driving". He turned away and Kate smiled "It won't last, just no that, you will never get a happy ending with her Smithy".
