Slugterra Fanfic
Chapter 37: On Step at a Time
-

After the skirmish in BullsEye Cavern, Twist and the Neons were called away to the medic bay as soon as they arrived.
Apparently news travelled quickly.
Kaiya watched as they dismounted there mechas gingerly and slowly hobbled towards their designation.
She didn't know what to think. Should she be sorry? Maybe pity? Her head was still whirling with her latest discoveries; the third Energy Disk, Black Skies voice, his ability to speak. Twist. The new personnel Blakk had hired.
She sighed as she remembered she still needed to talk to him about that.
Skies steered himself to her private garage, wirelessly opening the door and smoothly walking inside before he parked himself.
Kaiya ducked as they passed under the sliding door and slid down half heartedly, listening to the descending hum of her mechas engine as he powered down.
Leaning against Skies, she started to talk to him.
"You're getting too smart Skies….it's dangerous." She had no other words to start the topic so she went about as bluntly as she could.
Skies simply settled down into his power-nap pose -he simply lay down with front paws crossed over each other and head held up regally- and Kaiya half stumbled backwards as he moved behind her.
"Skies!" She snapped at him immediately like he was a naughty slug-hound.
She was not expecting him to react and she flinched as his head shot up higher and then looked away, settling his head on his paws with the air of a scolded puppy and a grumbly whine to match.
"Wha-uh-" She was speechless as she watched his electronic pupils flick over inher direction to check if she was still mad then flick away quickly when he saw she was watching him.
"Skies?"
The heavy metal head tilted in her direction, the white hot pupil in the sea of red looking directly at her.
Curiousity.
Wheels in her head began turning and she reached forward and scratched him under his chin, cooing, "Good Boy!"
Skies eyes dimmed to halfway and he lifted his chin up higher, his titanium jaws opening slightly with a pleased purr.
Kaiya laughed at the sight. Skies was developing a personality!
"Awww!" The noise came out in a mix of adoration and humour, which only caused her to grin even wider.
A fizz, a clang and a bark from Jet distracted her and as she stopped tickling his chin he instantly regained his silent brooding stare.
She sighed as she stood up, waving goodbye to Skies as she went to find Jet.
As she rounded the corner fear welled up inside, escaping her lips in a strangled 'No!'. She paused as her brain took stock of what she was seeing, causing her to break into a full sprint over to her fallen comrade.
Jet was lying on the ground trying to stand up, her robotic leg collapsed beneath her and blue energy leaking out over the floor, staining Jets velvety fur phosphorescent blue.
She was squirming and yelping as she tried to stand or see through her bionic parts.
"Woah, woah!," Kaiya instantly rushed to her pets side and slowly calmed her, stroking the velvety sides until Jet stopped squirming and just lay there whining pitifully.
It broke Kaiyas heart to see her pet in such a helpless state and she took a deep breath, trying to push down all the worry building inside of her as she lifted Jet up and leaned her against her chest.
Jets keen hearing heard the sound of Kaiyas frantic heartbeats and slowly tried to lick Kaiyas hand to comfort her. Kaiya just stroked her loyal dogs head and slowly examined the state of the bionic leg and eye.
As her fingers brushed the metal, she was treated with an electrical shock, causing both of them to yelp in surprise and pain.
Kaiya was at a loss at what to do. She hadn't actually built the parts for Jet, Smelter had. But she'd attached them with the knowledge from her old study books.
She'd need to replace the leg and eye, but how? She couldn't touch them without gaining an electric shock which hurt her and Jet. And she didn't want her canine to suffer anymore.
"What to do!? What TO DO?!" She was nearly yelling from the panic.
'Oh, why hadn't she replaced them earlier, when she saw Jet was in pain! When she saw the signs! Why HADN'T SHE?' She was responsible for this! Responsible for the pain Jet was in. Responsible for ANYTHING that happened to her precious memoir!
'Because you were busy, so caught up in your own little world you forgot about Jet, you forgot all about her. You forgot your last remaining family member...'
A tear trickled down her face as her brain went through all her memories at a lightning fast pace.
The worry was working with her, turning her brain into overdrive mode.
"If I can find an alternative route for Jets energy to flow, I'll have a decent chance at upgrading her leg. The eye will be harder."

She was so fixated on the task at hand she semi-consciously stood up, cradling Jet in her arms and walking over to her work bench.
She passed Skies, who raised his head at her muttering. His AI could detect something was not right.
" The wiring is connected to her optic nerves which in turn are connected to her brain. That will be harder to replace. But if I can just fuse the two wires together…" She continued muttering as she carefully placed Jet down on a clear space of her bench before alking evenly to grab some soft towels from her bathroom and making a comfortable space for Jet to lie down.
"Right…" She took a step back and thought out a mental list.
"Gas, I'll need anesthetic gas, pain killer. Medical tools, bio-metals..." The anxiety was building. She needed to make a design! She needed to plan out everything! She had to do so much! But she had less to no time.
She circled anxiously around her mecha, who was watching her with curiosity mixed with concern. If that made any sense…

There was such little time! She needed more time!
Jet was still whimpering quietly on the table, lying dead still yet her warm brown eyes were filled with pain and sorrow. Kaiya couldn't bear the sight any longer. It tore what was left of her heart to shreds to see her most precious soul lying on her workbench, paralysed and in pain.
She needed more TIME!
The idea that hit her was like a sledgehammer.
Time was ticking now, and she'd never be able to stop the flow, but maybe she could stop the time for Jet.
What was it called? Cryogenic freezing? Where they froze someones' body so they didn't age?
Tears threatening to breach her eyes, she turned and dashed out of her door, Jets pitiful whimpers tugging at her heart.
It was her only hope. And Jets only chance.

The Citadel was strangely empty, but the thought was far from Kaiyas mind as she dashed through the hallways and into the infirmary, loading up a trolley with much needed equipment, including an incubator, sleeping gas and others. She had decided she couldn't attempt cryogenic freezing on something she valued as a sister so she had gone onto the next best thing.
She steered the trolley immediately back to her room and skidded inside.
It would have made a peculiar sight to see if there had been anyone to witness it.

She had only been gone twenty minutes. But when she finally brought the equipment laden trolley inside, Jet was silent. Unmoving.
"No…" Was all she managed before she ran to her companions side. Skies was still sitting down, silent.
Kaiya reached a hand forward, dreading to feel the cool feel of death. But as her hand touched the short fur, she could feel warmth and the slight rise and fall of breath.
Of life.
"It's gonna be okay, Jet...I promise." She whispered as she stroked her beloved dogs head.
The trolley was wheeled towards her with a flick of Skies tail and Kaiya instantly set to work to create a makeshift incubator.
She inserted a breathing tube into Jets throat, who provided little resistance.
She set up a small containment box around Jet to keep her body temperature regular and inserted numerous needles to provide a nutrient drip and measure body activities.
It took her almost an hour to complete everything.
She did not know where she had learnt these skills or how she managed to complete everything but she didn't care.
She was only grateful of the small chance she was presented as Jet slipped into a long sleep.
Only to wake up when Kaiya was finished with her.

Three Days Later

Life had been hell for Kaiya, her nerves were frayed past the point of no return as she kept a daily surveillance on her comatose dog.
She hadn't left the Fortress, refusing every order Blakk had given that was outside of the Fortress.
Skies hadn't left his garage too. Kaiya had begged him to watch jet and he had complied, sitting patiently paws crossed and unblinking red eyes never leaving Jets prone form.

Tiny parts of Kaiyas mind still yearned for a thrill, a rush of adrenalin from racing outside the Fortress; but her heart knew that it wouldn't be the same without Jet. And she was too scared to leave the Fortress and Jet alone. What if something happened? And she wasn't there.
It was thoughts like this that kept waking her up in an hourly basis at night, until Blakk had commanded her to take sleeping pills under, strangely enough, Skies reassurance that he would wake her if anything was to happen.
That reassurance had happened via e-mail.
So now Skies could talk and write.
That small thought of Skies gaining intelligence had somehow interested Blakk.
Kaiya didn't like that.
But somehow, the thought of Skies being sentient gave her hope. At least she had a friend she could actually rely on.

She had gotten over the initial shock when she had taken a peek at his AI chip. It had seemed normal and he had no complaints or warning growls to give so she decided to have a chat with him: she talked to him normally and he replied but E-mail with the rare exception of a deep static 'yes' or 'no'.
She had asked about the first time she remembered him speaking, which was, for her, the other day in BullsEye. But apparently, Skies had mentioned something about a train crash.
Kaiya gave Skies a confused look but he said nothing more. He hadn't learnt to read facila expressions, she surmised.
But truth be told, the fact that her train crash memories were fuzzy scared her. She was a person who tried to remember everything that had ever happened to her and the Train Crash had been huge news. Sometimes it still gave her nightmares.
The chat had been short, she had kept herself busy checking Jets vitals and designing a new leg and eye for her, based around the same mechanics as her mechas heart. It could channel and use both types of energy.
Her only problem was the fact that Skies had been a machine. Jet was a living organism. Ghoul Energy might affect her in ways Kaiya dared not think of.
This had caused her to research Dark Water and its effects.
She started slipping into Blakks office and hacking and downloading his notes on the whole 'Ghouling' project, taking a serious approach towards the efects.
Blakk himself was living proof of the Dark Waters effects on humans.
She had just begun to think she had found a way to solve her problem butan urgent matter postponed her research.
Sirens out in the corridor had distracted her from her notes and she instantly switched on her phone to check her messages. She tapped the first one from Twist and sprang out of her chair, grabbing her clean jacket and sprinting towards Blakks office immediately as soon as she read the text.
She barged through the doors and into Lockes back.
He turned and glared at her so she just growled back before walking forward and into Blakks view.
Blakk was sitting at his desk, looking like the cat who got the cream. His fingers were steepled and Nicole was sitting on the desk next to him, an evil glint in her eyes, matched only by her husband.
"Glad you could join us Kaiya. I haven't seen much of you around lately." His voice was silk but she could easily hear the venom intertwined. What surprised her was the fact that the venom wasn't directed towards her.
She quickly glanced around the room, her eyes resting on the hunched over figure, kneeling in the centre of the office beaten and bloodied. The orange backpack was unmistakable.
Eli Shane.
Twist was standing next to him, sneering while the neons Twins were smirking in the background.
"Huh."

That was all she had managed and she instantly winced as the single phrase echoed around the room.
All eyes snapped in her direction and Blakks eyebrows knitted together in a brooding glare.
Eli managed to look up and glance over his shoulder, dried blood spattered around his nose and a dark purple bruise blossoming on his temple.
His uniform was dirty and ripped and his slug canisters were shattered and cracked, his famous slugs cowering inside them.
His blaster was lying on Blakks desk like meat in front of a hungry wolf.
"What do you mean, huh?" Blakk asked patiently.
Kaiya shrugged then ran her hand through her head. She was exhausted and impatient. She didn't have time for this.
"Oh, nothing." She answered absent mindedly.
Blakk took the answer grudgingly and then trained his attention on his captor.
"Eli Shane," He purred, "The boy of my arch-rival Will Shane. The Hero of the Ninety-nine Caverns and the Best Slug Slinger in Slugterra. The very same boy who sent me to the UnderWorld!." He spat the last sentence out with malice.
The word 'UnderWorld' triggered Kaiyas brain and she realized just how many Dark Bain were present. They easily outnumbered all the humans present.
Once again, her uneasiness grew.
Her eyes flicked back to Eli, who defiantly raised his head to meet Blakks glare head on.
A twinge of pride tugged in Kaiyas head and she was reminded of her defiance against Blakk. That was back in the old days, when she was 'wet behind the ears'. But now, now she had to much to lose if she defied him. She didn't know if Blakk knew this but either way, she couldn't afford a slip-up now. Blakk would eventually want her to get back on Skies and spread his terror throughout the Caverns once again but she couldn't risk leaving Jet unprotected. Twist and Nicole weren't to be trusted along with anyone else she knew her.
So she would be complacent. For now.
Slowly drifting back to reality, she realized she had missed half of the conversation between the two enemies.
She sighed and rolled her eyes as she realized it wasn't important; they were simply trading barbs. Or in Blakks case, kicks delivered by Twist.
A beep sounded on her glove and her reaction was instant.
She flicked up the notification, her heart rate increasing in fear that something had happened to Jet but her dog was stable. Instead, she discovered Black Skies had hacked the Surveillance system and was warning her of incoming Intruders.
The Shane Gang.
A thin line of mecha beasts were waiting at the top of Devils Gate.
There were so many Kaiya couldn't be bothered counting.
She glanced at Blakk and the others present. None seemed to be alerted of the presence.
She flicked her gaze towards the screen again and her eyes widened as she caught the site of an all too familiar T-Rex head appear over the brow of the ridge, steel mouth shut and moving at a leisurely pace. This was bad.
She couldn't afford to leave Jet alone without her or Skies.
"Blakk!" She couldn't stop herself.
Her words cut through the traded insults like knives and the whole room turned towards her.
"You need to stop trading barbs." Her voice was low and threatening. A tone which Blakk didn't take kindly too.
"Please do explain...why?" His stony gaze was settled firmly upon her, anger brewing in his eyes.
She took a deep mental breath and strode up to him, her fist raised so he could see the screen on her glove.
"This is why."
His eyes widened and he sucked in a breath before shooting daggers at Eli, who was still staring bravely at him.
Then with a swipe of his fingers, he accessed the camera feed and a large screen behind him showed the small legion of Mecha beast riders and slingers. There were young ones and old ones.
Some recognizable; such as Harper, Zaylee, Elina and the rest of the Shane Gang.
Others not.
Either way, all their faces showed the same determination. They were here for the Shane.
Kaiya turned around to face Eli Shane, the boy her boss hated so much. And something she had never wanted to deal with in the first place.
The spark of courage that never left his eye was still there, shining brighter at the sight of his friends.
Blakk, too, also caught the small smile of triumph on his enemys face. That set him in a rage.
He heaved himself up off the chair, slamming his huge hands down on the desk.
"TO ARMS!" He roared. His whole body radiated anger and his eyes wer as cold as snakes.
In the first few seconds the room was emptied and the building began rumbling softly as it was prepared for the oncoming battle.
Kaiya watched as Elis confidence shrunk, but the determined sparkle was still there.
"Why aren't you gone?"
The subtle questions twisted Kaiya around to face her boss.
"What do you mean?"
Blakk regarded her with surprise, "I mean, why aren't you out there, on Skies charging into the thick of things. Like you normally do?"
"I-..I can't!" Her composure slipped and she instantly felt the barb of his gaze dig into her.
"Why not?" His words drooled out, thick like poisoned honey.
Kaiya quickly regained herself, the fear sending her brain whirring "Skies has been having..well...'mood swings'" The sentence tasted strange on her tongue.
Blakk looked surprised and raised an eyebrow.

He appeared to say something but then quickly shut his mouth.
He then reconsidered, "Mood Swings?"
"You know, how he's getting…" She lowered her voice, "Smarter. He has now developed a personality. A teenage one." She faked a sigh.
Blakk looked stumped but he hid it well.
"Well then. Twist!" He called his apprentices name. Kaiya glanced over at Twist, who was still by the kneeling Elis side.
"Leave Eli in Kaiyas care. She can't perform today so," He seemed to choose his words carefully, "Take one of the Demons out. For a test ride."
Twist stiffened, his eyes wide with alarm and he flicked a worried glance between Blakk and Kaiya. "A-are you sure?"
Blakk simply glared at him and he slipped out guiltily.
"Demons?" The word slipped out as soon as she heard the sentence.
Blakk laughed a low menacing laugh, "Don't worry your head about it Kaiya."
Kaiya was baffled but she was left with no choice.
Blakk marched out the door, blaster in hand as Kaiya walked over towards Eli.
Before she reached him, she felt a hand on her shoulder. Turning around, she saw it was Nicole.
"Here." Her friend handed her the blue data disk. The one containing her blueprints of Skies
"Hmm? Oh thanks!" Kaiya took the disk back and tucked it under one arm.
Nicole simply nodded before slipping out the door.
Watching her friend leave the door, her uneasiness tripled. Something wasn't….right anymore.
Blakk was keeping secrets from his best.
Or well, at least she thought she was his best.
She was, right?
She shook her head clear and then turned to Eli, who had managed to push himself up onto unsteady feet.
"You look like you've had the shit beaten out of you." Was all she said.
Eli simply glanced at her, clever blue eyes taking her in. Detail for detail.
"Well" He started, " What'd you expect?"
Kaiya simply glanced at him and raised an eyebrow.

Eli ached. He ached so bad. His ribs felt like cracked glass, his head was throbbing, on the brink of darkness and his insides felt like the been tossed in a shredder.
He had slipped up badly. He should've never have raced ahead of Elina in the canyon. That would've meant that he never would encountered the huge drill being transported along the outermost of Slugterra.
And all the armed guards with their ghouls.
He hadn't stood a chance. And then there had been Twist. Twist who had rammed his mecha into Lucky. Sent him tumbling off and slamming his head on a rock.
On the brink of unconsciousness, he remembered two girls. Complete opposites yet still twins.
They lifted him and threw him over a mecha like a sack. He hadn't even managed to get a slug out. Or to let them escape.
The last thing he remembered was the sight of twist smiling. Evil deep in his eyes and flanked by two things Eli wished he would never see again.
Dark Bain.
Then a heavy hit on the side of his head had sent him spiralling into darkness.
Only to wake up as Blakks prisoner.
With no way out.

But yet, the sight of his companions, the slingers proud to bear the title of Shane Gang or be affiliated with him, readying themselves for battle atop Devils Gate. It warmed his heart and gave him confidence. Courage. A will to live and too escape.
"You look like you've had the shit beaten out of you." The most notorious mecha racer was standing next to him, eyeing him up. He straightened up, his slugs squeaking.
He copied her before replying.
"Well? What'd you expect?"
The raised eyebrow was followed by a small smile from Kaiya.
Elis eyes widened. That was unexpected.
Then the hilt of an electric knife slammed into his forehead, sending his staggering backwards.
"Ah!" He cried as he went down, his eyes half open and able to catch the glimpse of a thick soled boot come crunching down on the side of his head.
His last thought in a mind filled with numbed pain, before the darkness came to claim him once again was "That's more like it.".

Kaiya stared down at Elis prone figure. She had knocked out his defenses with a small smile then slammed the hilt of her knife into the front of his skull.
Unfortunately, the forehead was the strongest part of the body, so Kaiya knew it wouldn't put him out. When he was on the ground she had slammed her heel into his temple, that act would guarantee he was out for a long time.

Leaving her with enough time to carry him towards the cell, check up on Jet and then work on her new leg.
Slipping the long knife in its sheath, she leaned over and picked Eli up, slinging him over her shoulder like a sach of rocks.
"Ugh, fat bastard." She muttered as she walked unsteadily towards the door until she eventually found a rhythm and continued at a good pace towards the cells.
Part of her wished she had gotten him to walk to the cell first, but she had known that he always made his escape when he was conscious and put in his cell. It gave him the opportunity to learn the layout and determine potential tools and shortcuts.
As she swiped open the door into the prison block, something bit one of her fingers.
She flinched and flicked her fingers but she refused to remove her hand from Elis back.
Glancing over she saw his Arachnet chewing on her finger. It caught her gaze and she hissed at it, sending it scurrying back to its slug container.
"That's another thing.." She muttered, "His loyal slugs. Proper pests. I'll nab 'em all and have 'em ghouled."
Most of the prison cells were empty. Blakk had ordered a 'clean out' the other day, sending all those that were no longer important down to the Deep Caverns as slaves for Brimstone.
She shuddered as she recalled their pitiful screams as they were sucked into the swirling red and black vortex. Blakks laugh had sliced through their screams as he watched them fall to their doom, safe behind a large diamond-glass window, high up in his office.
She had been the one to herd them into the room, ensuring all their chains were secure and that none were going to mess them up.
It had been fun, to watch them shrink from her gaze in fear. Watch them flinch when a foolish brave man who had leaped at a guard had been pacified by the blade of her knife in his gut.
She still remembered the smell of his flesh burning as he writhed in pain, the maniacal grin on Blakks face and the numerous guards that turned their heads away.
The memory of burning flesh brought with it the smell of smoke.
Smoke?

She glanced down to find an Infurnace trying to set her jacket on fire.
"Hey!" She snapped, batting the flames out and grabbing the slug, squeezing hard.
The other slugs squeaked in angry alarm as the Infurnace lit himself on fire in an attempt to get her to release him.
Unfortunately for the slug, Kaiya had anti-heat gloves, due to their many uses when dealing with mechanics, one Mecha beast in particular.
Her fingers from the middle knuckle up were uncovered but she was holding the slug in a specific way so they wouldn't get burnt. After all, only the top of his head was alight.

"You know that's not gonna change anything...except piss me off." It felt weird to be talking to a slug, something small and insignificant to her. The slug simply glared at her with small eyes before reluctantly extinguishing itself. She grinned at her triumph and released the slug who hopped away hurriedly.
If Jet was here she'd have fed the devil to her. She always had a soft spot for slugs

The memory stuck firmly in her head and her breath caught in her throat.
If Jet was here…
Her pace slowed as she remembered her carefree pet lying still on the bench, barely breathing and relying on machines to keep her alive.
She gritted her teeth and forced the image out of her mind, picking up her pace again in an attempt to stop the threatening feeling of tears.
She'd fix her. She had to fix her sister.
The body slung over her shoulder started to stir as she reached the end of the prison block and Kaiya half-heartedly swiped the door open and tapped in a nine digit code. The red bars of solidifying hologramic-light vapourized and she dumped the body firmly on the steel bench, rolling her shoulder to stretch her sore muscles.

Her captive groaned as he came too, reaching a gloved hand for his head, "Ugh..wha? Oh, right…"
"You're used to being knocked out and brought to enemy lairs?" She asked, half surprised as she walked in the cell and the red bars slid into place behind her.
"No.." Eli groaned, "Not really."
Kaiya shrugged and slowly slid the Buzz-blade out of its sheath, "Look, Eli. Blakk will be back any minute after he's dealt with your friends and i have somewhere I need to be so let's get this straight. Hand over your little helpers and I'll ensure they won't get ghouled."
His blue eyes widened as she made her demand clear, "What? Give you my slugs? You'll have them ghouled as soon as you're out of my cell! Why should I give them to you!"
His tiny comrades squeaked their approval of his words.
Kaiya sighed and shrugged, grinning on the inside "Well, if you want them removed by force and most certainly ghouled, feel free. But with me? They'll have a chance."
Eli opened his mouth to speak but shut it as her words sunk in. He narrowed his eyes and scrutinzed her.
Everything about her pose, her expression, her idle flipping of the electrical knife as she chucked it up, not even watching its rotation in the air, then caught at the hilt perfectly without a single fumble.
His slugs could sense he was thinking and they all started squeaking, trying to persuade him otherwise.
"Well?" She acted like she had all the time in the world.

Eli glanced at each of his team, one at a time with worry. They had all grown silent at her words but their faces looked crestfallen.

The Best Slinger of the Ninety-Nine caverns took a shuddering breath and sagged his shoulders.
"Fine." His whisper-thin voice was on the edge of cracking.
Kaiya simply nodded, her face serious.
"You're doing the right thing. Trust me."
Eli just looked up and met her gaze steadily. Kaiya felt a flicker of unease at how much strength was behind those eyes. If she screwed up, she'd be… there weren't any words for what would happen to her if she screwed up.

But she wouldn't. She had everything planned out.
Eli motioned with his head for the slugs to leave. Kaiya disabled the red prison bars and grabbed a slug carrier that lay around the corner.
She dumped it down on the ground in front of Eli as he sat down on the bench, hunched forward.
Eli said nothing, yet his slugs reluctantly left him, streaming out of his backpack and hopping out of the tubes in a swarm.
Only Burpy stayed, glaring at her with fierce determination. He was staying.
"Burpy too."
Eli raised his head slowly before dropping, muttering something under his breath. Burpy instantly tensed and squeaked in disbelief.
Kaiya was slightly impressed at how Eli understood and controlled his slugs.
She'd never experienced something like this except with Skies and Jet.

But then, she'd never really bothered with slugs in the first place once she'd made Black Skies.
A harsher muttering from eli sent Burpy packing. He sullenly hopped of his friends shoulder and on to the top of the slug carrier.
Kaiya waited expectantly for him to hop in a tube, but he didn't.
She scowled and made to grab him and shove him in one of the spares but Elis words stopped her.
"Don't."
That was all he said yet Kaiya knew the hidden meaning behind him.
He wouldn't talk much. He knew what was coming.
She shut the slug carrier, the multitude of slugs and their tubes sliding inwards and sealing the tops. Burpy hopped up her arm and sat on her shoulder; obviously to try and keep an eye on her.
Kaiya picked up the heavy container and slowly stepped out of the cell.
She half turned and swiped her identity pass in the lock, watching in her peripheral as the red bars slid shut, illuminating Elis determined face.
Kaiya simply glanced away and strode down, towards her room.
Deep down in her mind she felt a surge of pity.
Eli didn't know what was coming.
And neither did she
