Chapter 12

Angelo headed for the garage to get a short video of Det. Williams to provide the proof of life that that damned Commander had demanded and pushed open the door. In shock he spotted two armed men entering through the outside service door that was supposed to be locked. Reacting instantly, he drew his gun and fired at the larger target, the Hawaiian native with a shotgun.

His first shot caught Chin squarely in the chest, knocking him backward and out the door. Steve dropped all the way to the floor, firing back.

"Chin….," he called out, not able to spare a glance at his friend. Rising slightly, McGarrett sent a spray of bullets in the direction of the door.

"I'm okay, just took one in the vest," Chin replied sounding out of breath. "Looks like we lost the element of surprise."

"No kidding," Steve answered. "Kono, move in now, we've been made," he ordered and heard her answer in the affirmative.

Angelo had quickly realized he was out-gunned and had pulled the door shut and backed up. He was grateful that he had substituted a steel door between the garage and the house when he moved in. He could hear the bullets fired after him pinging off it.

"Cops….we have cops," he yelled to his two companions. As he shouted, he ducked into a room next to the garage that held his weapons supply. Grabbing an AK-47 and some ammo, he could hear the pounding on the front door and Cole was shouting to Trish to go out a back window.

Inside the garage, Steve hustled around the truck's front hood, using it as a shield. There was a sound of rattling wood and muffled yelling coming from the area near the stairs. He could see a panel of wood shaking and the screws holding a latch in place were beginning to protrude from the wood. Chin was up and working his way around the rear of the truck, keeping an eye on the door.

"Get him out Steve," Chin called out.

"Danny, is that you?" Steve enquired as he reached the rough door in the wall.

"Steve? Hell yea it's me, get me out!" Danny's voice called back.

"Hold on Danno," Steve instructed and setting his rifle down, he reached to pull open the latch. At that same moment Danny delivered one final kick that broke the bolt and sent the wooden door flying outward. Steve had snatched his hand back quickly but still caught the brunt of the door in the shins. Looking into the dark hole, Steve grinned.

"Hey man, looks like you managed to get yourself into a tight spot," he said mildly.

"Not funny McGarrett. Get me out of here this instant," Danny growled in annoyance.

The sound of gunfire from inside the house had Chin moving up the stairs to the door. He tried to open it but found it was locked.

"Pretty clever, he installed a self locking steel door," Chin observed as he looked down at where Steve was taking hold of Danny's ankles to pull him free.

"Will you hurry up Steven," Danny was complaining.

Once he had freed his partner from his prison, Steve took one look at the ropes that bound Danny's ankles and knew he couldn't untie the tight knots. He got a pocket knife out of his pocket and began cutting the ropes.

"Where am I? Who is that character that took me from that old man's place? What the hell is going on?" Danny peppered him with questions while he worked.

"Save the questions buddy and let us get you out of here," Steve commented as he helped Danny into a sitting position.

"Then get these cuffs off. The damned kid used my own cuffs against me," Danny grumbled as he tried to raise his wrists so Steve could see them better.

"That was pretty smart actually," Steve commented. "How did they forget to gag you?" he asked as he retrieved a key from his other pocket.

"You really are not funny you moron," Danny sputtered. "Just hurry up."

As McGarrett released the first cuff, the house door flew open, causing Chin to jump off the stairs to avoid Angelo charging out brandishing a rifle. Chin rolled under the rear of the truck, yelling a warning to Steve and Danny just as Trey turned his attention to the pair of men near the hole in the wall.

Recognizing McGarrett, Trey howled in anger, his plans going up in smoke and he was aware that this was going to end badly. His leverage was gone and now he could only try and inflict as much damage on his enemies as he could.

Steve saw Angelo swing his rifle muzzle to sight in on Danny's chest and shoved his partner to the floor, protectively covering his body with his own. Trey fired quickly, his first bullet sliding under McGarrett's arm and penetrating his side where the two flaps of the vest didn't meet. With a groan, Steve became still, lying over his partner. A second shot ricocheted off the concrete floor and buried in Danny's upper right arm. Williams tried to free McGarrett's Sig from its holster with his left hand as he remained trapped under Steve's limp form.

"Chin…..Steve's hit," he called out.

Kelly had rolled free of the truck and rose to pump several shots into Angelo at the same time that Danny managed to free the weapon and awkwardly shot at the drug dealer. Crying out in pain, Angelo tumbled from the stairs to lie bleeding out on the floor.

After kicking the rifle away from Angelo's body, Chin hurried over to McGarrett and Williams, calling to Kono to be updated on the status in the house. He checked Steve's neck for a pulse and was relieved to find it beating normally. Crouching down next to the pair he pressed a gloved hand to the bleeding wound.

"Hey Cuz, we've got the other two," Kono announced as she popped her head out the door. She quickly took in the scene in the garage, noticing that Steve was unresponsive and bleeding. "What happened?"

"Call an ambulance quick, Steve's been shot," Chin ordered.

"Don't forget me," Danny groaned, his arm aching from the wound along with his head banging from all the abuse it had taken.

"We won't brah," Chin assured him as Kono disappeared to make her calls.

Danny wiggled free far enough to sit up and help support Steve as Chin kept pressure on the wound.

"Damn it man, why did you do that?" Danny scolded his unconscious partner. "You always have to play hero and end up bleeding. Do you have some kind of complex?"

A low groan escaped McGarrett.

"Steve…..talk to me. Are you okay?" Danny demanded as he gently shook the man in his lap.

"Danny…..I…'k," Steve mumbled, eyes fluttering open.

"No you are not okay. Stay still until the EMTs get here," Danny ordered.

"Kawela PD had an ambulance on standby," Kono said as she reappeared in the doorway. She reached out and hit the garage door opener alongside the door and saw that Steve had his eyes open. "Hey Boss, good to see you awake."

Sirens could be heard approaching the house and Chin looked up at his cousin.

"Tell them to hurry," he instructed as he noticed that Danny was becoming almost as pale as Steve. Kono rushed out to meet the ambulance.

The garage became a flurry of activity when the EMTs arrived with a gurney and went to work on Steve. Chin assisted Danny in moving out of the way as they attempted to stop the bleeding under Steve's arm and assess his overall condition. Chin did his own assessment of the wound to Danny's arm.

"Gentlemen, when you get Steve secured, I have another patient for you," he informed them.

"Let them be Chin, I'm fine," Danny protested. He knew he had his own worries but they didn't seem important given that his partner and friend had once again lapsed into unconsciousness.

"They can take both of you," Chin insisted. "You need treatment and have to be checked out." He helped Danny to his feet as one of the EMTs told him to bring Danny along. "Go with them and keep an eye on Steve," he added softly as he slid an arm around Danny's waist.

"Okay," Danny agreed and leaned heavily on Chin as they headed for the ambulance. He was aware that he didn't know if he could have walked there on his own, his legs felt very unsteady and he was dizzy. Kelly strong grip was all that was keeping him from dissolving into a heap on the ground.

Kono joined Chin after both men had been safely loaded onto the ambulance and it pulled out of the yard.

"Will they be okay?" she asked.

"The EMTs seemed to think so. Steve's vitals were okay. Danny was pretty unsteady and was hit in the arm so I insisted he go with them. He wanted to stay behind. He will do better if he has Steve to worry about and should cooperate with the hospital staff," Chin replied.

"Smart move Cuz," Kono agreed.

"We don't know if he suffered any other injuries while being held captive. It is better that he get cleared by a doctor."

"Good thinking," Kono agreed. "The locals have control of the situation so let's let them do the clean up and we can go to the hospital and find out how they are doing."

"Sure, do you have the keys to Steve's truck or do you need a ride?"

"No keys, he doesn't let them go easy," Kono laughed. "We can pick up the truck later." She paused and a look of concern crossed her face. "I have to call Catherine and let her know that Steve is shot."

"You can wait until we're at the hospital so you can give a full report," Chin advised. He draped an arm around her shoulders. "There is no need to worry her without facts; it can wait until we know more."

"Okay," Kono agreed. Together they headed to his vehicle to check on their teammates.
