Thanks for the response to the last chapter. It is nice to have so many of you reading the story. So let's see how Danny and Steve are doing, shall we?

Chapter 13

Arriving at the hospital, Chin and Kono learned that Steve was in surgery to remove the bullet and Danny was being treated in an ER cubicle. They found seats in the waiting room and tried to get comfortable.

"I should call Catherine, she should be here…..if…..well…she needs to know," Kono said softly, not able to put into words her biggest fears.

"They said things looked good, before he went into surgery he had regained consciousness," Chin reminded her. "You can tell her that much and be positive. You are right, she needs to know."

Nodding, Kono pulled her phone out of her pocket and found Catherine's contact number. Her call was answered on the first ring even though it was just after midnight.

"What's happening Kono?" Catherine asked anxiously.

"We found Danny. He's hurt but he will be fine. How's Grace?"

"She's sleeping but she'll be happy to hear the news," Catherine answered. There was a slight pause. "Kono, is there a reason why Steve isn't calling me with this news?"

Kono bit her lower lip nervously and glanced at Chin. He laid a supportive hand on her shoulder and squeezed it lightly.

"Kono," Cath prompted.

"I'm sorry, I didn't do a good job of watching Steve's back. He got shot and is in surgery right now. They think he will be just fine," Kono said quickly. She looked at Chin in concern.

This time the pause was even longer. There was a deep sigh from the other end before Cath spoke again.

"Okay, what hospital are you at? I'll wake Grace and we'll be there as quickly as possible. She needs to see her Danno and I'm sure he'll feel better seeing her too," she said calmly. "And if you see Steve before I get there you tell him I expect him to be okay."

Kono gave her their location and promised she would pass on her instructions to Steve and then hung up. She smiled slightly at her cousin.

"She's bringing Grace," she told him. "She took that a lot better than I thought she would."

"She has been through this with Steve before," Chin remarked. "I think she is right about Grace. Both she and Danny will do better if they are together."

Ten minutes later, Danny was released from the ER exam room, his right arm in a sling, wrists bandaged and under instructions to rest. He had been told to watch for signs of a concussion and to see his own doctor on Monday. Chin and Kono promised they would keep an eye on him over the weekend. They told Danny that Catherine was on the way with Grace and then they moved up to the surgical waiting room to learn how Steve was doing.

They were the only ones in the room when Catherine arrived with a sleepy Grace who perked up the moment she set eyes on her father.

"Danno….are you okay?" she exclaimed as she launched herself at her father, hugging him before he could get to his feet.

"Hey Monkey, I'm fine," Danny answered, wincing slightly at the jolt to his right arm but wrapping his good arm around his daughter. He met Catherine's eyes over Grace's head and mouthed the words 'thank you'. Catherine nodded and then looked at Chin and Kono for information.

"Is Steve still in surgery?" she asked.

"Yes but we should be hearing something soon," Chin replied.

"How did you get hurt?" Grace asked Danny, gently touching his arm and noticing his bandaged wrists.

"I was helping Uncle Steve catch some bad guys," he told her. "I'm fine sweetie."

"But Uncle Steve is hurt too?" she questioned.

"Yes but the doctors are taking care of him. We should hear how he is pretty soon," Danny explained.

Grace's large brown eyes scanned the rest of their group, seeking confirmation to her father's assurances.

"Grace, your Uncle Steve will be fine," Kono spoke up first. "We are waiting to hear how he's doing and then he can go home."

Grace centered her attention on Catherine, knowing that if she agreed then it was all right. Catherine nodded, not able to find her voice but she smiled to help the child feel better.

As if he heard the conversation in the room, a doctor emerged and approached the group. He gave them an encouraging smile as he stopped before them.

"You are the friends of Commander McGarrett?" he asked for formal confirmation.

"We are," Catherine replied, knowing she and Danny were Steve's representatives. "How is he?"

"Commander McGarrett had a bullet buried in his left side. It entered below his arm between his Kevlar vest protection, travelling into his chest and deflecting downward off his rib. He handled the surgery well, it was a tricky extraction because of where it was located and that is why it took so long," the doctor reported. "I have every reason to believe that he will recover completely with the proper rest. We are going to keep him until morning to be sure he doesn't develop an infection and then we will release him."

"When can we see him?" Danny asked.

"He's in recovery at the moment. Once he is alert enough to be moved to a room a nurse will come to tell you. Until then you may wait here."

"Thank you Doctor….?" Catherine asked.

"Dr. Okena and I'm very happy to be able to give you good news. He will be fine with some rest and recovery," the man said with a tired smile. "Now if you will forgive me, I have another patient who needs me."

"Of course…..thank you," the group responded as the man turned to leave. He waved a hand briefly and disappeared back through surgical doors.

"So Uncle Steve is going to be okay?" Grace asked the others.

"Yes he will be Monkey," Danny said with a reassuring smile.

"Of course he will," Catherine added in relief when Grace's gaze fell on her. "Steve is going to be just fine."

A huge smile broke over Grace's face as the others nodded in agreement. She was completely willing to believe what the adults were saying as long as her Uncle Steve got better. She buried herself closer into her father's embrace, her arms snaking up around his neck. Danny continued to hold her tight with his left arm.

Catherine moved to a nearby chair and sank down, all her energy leaving her. She had questions for Chin and Kono but didn't want to bring them up in front of Grace. There was no need for the young girl to hear what her father had gone through that day.

Kono could tell that Cath had questions and she sat down beside her and began to fill her in quietly, making sure that Grace wasn't listening in. She told Catherine all that had gone down since they learned that Kapono Lee and his nephews were involved in taking Danny prisoner.

When the nurse came to show them to Steve's room, they all headed down the hall. Before she let them enter the nurse explained that Commander McGarrett would be groggy and slow to respond for a while. She warned them not to tire him out.

Catherine was the first one through the door and smiled when she saw he was able to focus on her.

"Hello Sailor."

"Catherine, you found me," he replied, his words sluggish but his smile widening.

"Of course Steve, they call me when you end up in the hospital," Catherine chuckled softly. "Why is it that we end up doing this so often?"

"It's a curse," Steve grinned.

"Uncle Steve….I'm so sorry that you got hurt helping Danno catch the bad guys," Grace announced as she rushed to his bedside. She bounced on her toes to see he was awake and looking more or less in one piece.

"I should have been watching the bad guy better but I will be okay," Steve assured her as his fingers closed over the hand she had placed on the bedrail. He looked over at Danny. "Hey partner, how are you?"

"Good, thanks to you," Danny acknowledged seriously as he stopped behind his daughter.

"No problem," Steve said quietly. "You would have done the same."

"That is up for debate," Danny smirked but his eyes remained serious. "But I really do appreciate the effort. I'm glad you will be okay."

"Hey Boss, you look pretty good for scaring us half to death," Kono quipped. "Do you think we can close a case without putting you or Danny in the hospital next time?"

"Aw….I worried you Kono?" Steve teased as he felt more alert.

"You managed to worry us," Chin admitted. "And you should get some rest."

"I'm fine," Steve argued but his eyes drooped and he yawned widely.

"Sure you are brah," Chin said smoothly. "The nurse said we shouldn't tire you."

"He's always playing hero," Catherine teased. "I think it's hardwired into his DNA." She moved closer to Steve's left side, carefully maneuvering around the equipment. Gently reaching out, she took his left hand in hers, reassuring him with her physical presence.

"My partner was in danger, I had to do something," Steve commented, his gaze moving among the others in the room.

A large yawn escaped Grace and she leaned back against Danny.

"Danny, take Grace home, it's way past her bedtime," Steve spoke up.

"They will probably find us a room to crash in for the remainder of the night," Danny suggested.

"Have someone give you a ride back to Honolulu Danny. Salvage what is left of your weekend," Steve said firmly. "Really, everyone….go home and get some sleep. I'll be released in the morning and we can pick things up from there," he insisted.

End chapter.

So there you go….the guys will be fine. Thank you so much for reading. I am going to be out of town next Friday so the next chapter will not be posted until Saturday. I promise my notebooks will go with me so I will have a new chapter finished by then.
