Wrong Place, Very Wrong Time XV

Disclaimer: I do not own Hawaii 5-0. I do like playing in their world though and will continue to do it.

Thank you for your patience for my later posting last week. I did get a chapter finished in time this week. The muse threw me a curve with this one. I hope you like it.

Chapter 15

McGarrett tried to convince Catherine to go directly to headquarters but she over-ruled him, insisting that she needed a shower and change of clothing. With a smile she pointed out that it would be a good idea from him to get some fresh clothing as well. He then suggested that his bloody shirt would help intimidate the Wilson boys but she sweetly reminded him that she was driving and they were going home first. With a grin, Steve sat back and let the argument drop.

At home Catherine quickly showered and changed into new clothes. Seeing that Steve had changed as well, Catherine agreed to take him to 5-0 headquarters if he would take his prescribed painkillers and remember to call Grace Williams as he promised. Knowing that once again he would not win this fight, McGarrett swallowed his meds and made the call as Catherine drove him to the office.

As they entered the office space, neither of them was surprised to find Chin and Kono gathered around the smart table.

"Looking good Boss," Kono greeted them. She looked him over from head to toe and grinned at Catherine. "How on earth did you get him to agree to stop home and change clothes?"

"I threatened to shoot him if he didn't do it," Catherine said mildly.

"She did not," Steve interjected firmly.

"Of course she didn't," Chin chuckled. "Catherine is far too persuasive to need a weapon to make you listen."

"Very true and never argue with a woman who knows how to take you down," Steve grinned. "And never argue with her when she's right."

"Well said Sailor," Catherine laughed and stepped back to let Steve run his team.

"All right, bring me up to speed on what went down in Angelo's house. Who else was involved and how did he manage to come charging back into the garage?" Steve asked.

"I'm sorry Steve. The woman was grabbed as she tried running out the back while her brother fired on us to keep us from entering from the front very quickly. Angelo had remained in his weapons room near the garage and we didn't get to him fast enough to stop him from crashing your rescue party," Kono explained.

"That's all water under the bridge Kono," Steve shrugged. "I'm not throwing out blame here; you all did the best you could. No one figured he would come back out our way to face our guns. We'll be more careful in the future."

"We do have Trish and Cole Weathers in custody, Cole is in the hospital prison ward with a gunshot to the abdomen and neither one is talking. They helped distribute his drugs and we should be able to get names from them. Trish was romantically tied to Angelo," Chin reported.

"And we have learned that Kapono Lee had quite the marijuana field growing out of sight of his house. Quite the thriving business he had going and that's how he knew Angelo," Kono added. "He'll have a number of names of dealers who bought his product. We can clean up a lot of the drug trade on the North Shore."

"Perfect," McGarrett responded, his eyes glittering in triumph. "Now I need to talk to James Wilson and find out why he did what he did. We can't undo Danny's experience but we can find out exactly why those boys grabbed him. Catching their uncle's buyers is only going to be a bonus."

"James said he was afraid Danny would report him to the Maui PD. He didn't want to face robbery charges," Kono commented. "We know he panicked." The look on Steve's face stopped her. "You think there is more to it, don't you?"

"Robbery charges, even multiple ones do not earn you a life sentence in Halawa but kidnapping and killing a cop would. I think James was afraid of a more serious charge than robbery to make him attempt to silence Danny," Steve said thoughtfully. "Chin, were there any other high profile crimes that Maui reported around the time James decided to relocate to Oahu?"

"They said that there were several more pressing cases that put the robberies on the back burner," Chin replied. "I'll reconnect with them and get details on those crimes."

"Thanks Chin," Steve said gratefully. "This has been bothering me ever since we talked to James, his story doesn't ring true."

"I'm not sure his uncle knew why he reacted the way he did but I'm willing to bet his brother Paul knows the truth. Danny said the younger brother was the one who tackled him," Kono offered.

"Paul was very nervous, he might be the weak link," Steve agreed. "If James doesn't break I'm willing to bet he does."

They were interrupted by the sound of the main doors opening and they turned to see Danny sauntering in, grinning at the surprised looks on their faces. He was still wearing the sling for his arm.

"Did you seriously think that I would miss interviewing those punks who kidnapped me?" he declared as he joined them. "After the big guy called Grace as he promised, I knew he would head here."

"But you had plans with Grace, didn't you?" Steve asked.

"I did," Danny confirmed. "However, Grace received an invitation to attend a pool, lunch and movie party today. She may love her Danno but I can't compete with swimming, pizza and Disney. The kid misses Jersey so she is excited about a movie showing snow and ice," he sighed. "And today I'm okay with it because I need to confront the Wilson boys."

"But Danny…." Kono began.

"Do not tell me that I should be resting. Not with Super SEAL standing here after just being released from the hospital this morning," Danny interrupted her, shaking a finger at her. "I'm fine, a bit sore but okay. I even took a cab here since no one thought to return my car to my house."

"It was a crime scene brah," Kono laughed. "We should have it cleared and back to you on Monday. And after the doctor says you are cleared to drive."

"It had better be in one piece and with a full tank," Danny declared.

"Of course man…we'll even remove the fingerprint dust," Kono answered rolling her eyes.

"So…time to get down to business," Steve insisted. "Kono, I want to see James first. Have an officer transfer him to the interrogation room. Cath, would you work with Chin on finding out what James might have been running from when he came here. Sort through the ones that would cause a kid to skip off the island quickly."

"Sure thing Steve. We can sort through all the information that Maui sends over," she agreed and followed Chin to his office. Kono went to her office to arrange the transfer of their prisoner.

"So you are thinking James was involved in more than a few robberies?" Danny asked Steve.

"Think about it, why would he be afraid of facing some robbery charges where no one was hurt? Why would he risk kidnapping a cop? Reckless driving and a speeding ticket are not big deals and might never have connected him to the Maui robberies. I believe something bigger is hanging over James' head. He has to have made a major mistake somewhere," Steve explained.

A huge smile broke over Danny's face.

"I am impressed Steven," he said in admiration. "You displayed remarkable deductive reasoning and we will make a cop out of you yet."

Steve snorted and shook his head.

"Naval Intelligence Danny. I have the training all ready," he smirked as he tapped his chest.

"You keep telling yourself that," Danny taunted.

Their conversation was interrupted by Kono returning to the table.

"James Wilson is being transferred to the interrogation room. Is this just your party or may I join in the fun?" she asked.

"By all means come along. He may relax and talk easier to you," Danny stated.

"Sounds like a plan, Kono can play good cop," Steve commented.

"Oh I can lull his fears and then nail his hide to the wall," Kono laughed. "It will be fun to put that kid in his place. He was completely smug when we began talking to him last night."

"She has certainly been hanging around you too long," Danny said shaking his head and looking disappointed.

"That is what makes me so good," Kono said lightly. She grinned at both men.

"Delusional…the poor girl is delusional," Danny muttered still shaking his head.

"Don't go there brah," Kono warned as Steve chuckled. He smile told Danny she wasn't serious and he grinned back at her, enjoying the banter. He looked over at Steve and winked.

"Let's go put the fear of 5-0 into this punk. I want to know what else this kid has gotten into and why he felt he had to take me to cover it up," Danny said seriously.

Steve nodded, ready to head down to the interview room. He was feeling the dull ache in his side become more insistent and wanted this interview to begin. Once he had the answers he wanted he just might let Catherine bully him into going home. His instincts told him that James was dirtier than he was letting on and there was a more serious crime in his background. He was not going to dodge the punishment he deserved.

"I agree," he said and headed towards the doors with Danny and Kono following.

Just outside the door to the blue lit room, they paused to discuss their approach to this interview.

"Let us start and then you jump in if it feels right," Steve told Kono.

"Why don't you two begin and I'll come in at a good moment," she suggested. "Let me make an entrance and throw him off balance. He may see me as someone who will side with him at first."

"Oh…..she's into playing games. I like it," Danny laughed.

"Then let's go in and set the stage," Steve said reaching for the door handle.

End chapter.

Thank you for reading. I hope you liked the little side step the muse decided on. Interview coming next week.
