Chapter 16

James Wilson sat cuffed to a chair in the blue lit room and looked up as the door clicked open, revealing Commander Steve McGarrett. A smirk appeared on the boy's face, his night in a cell had given him time to think and his ego had convinced him the situation wasn't as bleak as he first believed. A good lawyer that his mother would undoubtedly provide could make this work out since he hadn't really done most of the law breaking. Paulie had been the one to tackle the cop and knocked the man out but the kid was just eighteen and had no record so he wouldn't face much jail time if any. Uncle Kapono was the one who turned the cop over to the drug dealer and James could not be responsible for that. All in all he could only be accused of moving the Camaro and the robberies on Maui. A deal could be struck on the robberies if he gave the names of his fellow thieves. No one could discover his big secret because only Paul knew that and the boy worshipped him, he would never rat him out. James felt very good about his position in all this.

The smirk faded somewhat as he saw the man who followed McGarrett into the room. It was now clear that Trey Angelo had failed to follow through on his part of the deal; Danny Williams was very much alive. Furiously he tried to remember how much he had admitted to within Williams' hearing. He now eyed the two men warily as they silently came to a stop in front of him.

Steve waited a few seconds before speaking. He enjoyed seeing the cocky look fade from the boy's face.

"You are facing numerous robbery charges on Maui and now we can add kidnapping a police officer to those charges. What do you have to say for yourself?" Steve asked.

"I panicked," James said. "I had no idea the dude in the black car was a cop."

"The minute I stopped you I identified myself," Danny pointed out.

"I was scared."

"James, you can't be this big of an idiot even with the dumb choices you've made. You pulled off some pretty successful robberies and avoided arrest so I'm sure you knew a traffic ticket wasn't going to send you back to Maui," Steve said moving closer to the boy. "You chose to take Det. Williams prisoner….you knew what you were doing."

"I…..I didn't. I over-reacted and you can't prove anything different," James protested.

Kono had been listening, waiting for the right moment to join the interrogation when Catherine came hurrying down the corridor.

"Kono, we think we've found James' secret. Four days before James arrived on Oahu there was a robbery and murder of a wealthy older woman in James' home town. Kala'i Ano was found beaten and stabbed with one of her own kitchen knives and many of her valuables were missing. She lived alone and wasn't found until a day later when a niece stopped by to check on her. A neighbor's security camera outside caught an image of a dark red Saturn Vue that drove by the house around the time of the coroner's estimated TOD. It just so happens that Lena Wilson, James' mother owned that same model of Saturn at the time of the murder. They couldn't get a clear picture of the license plate but there were not many of those cars registered on Maui. It's a good lead," Catherine told her. "Chin is checking further but we both think that James is responsible for the murder and that is why he panicked when Danny stopped him."

"That makes more sense. Facing a murder charge could be the trigger that made him do something stupid like kidnap a cop," Kono agreed taking the report from Catherine. "He is really in deep trouble."

"It should be interesting to see how he reacts to Mrs. Ano's name. I don't think he's that good of an actor to cover that reaction. And if that doesn't work then perhaps Paul will give us the truth when we question him," Catherine suggested.

"Good idea sista," Kono nodded. "Thanks Catherine."

"Well we don't know for sure he did it but it certainly would explain things better. Chin is digging for more information and at least this could provide the wedge to get the kid to open up."

"Oh I think it will be a very good lever," Kono stated. "I have a feeling that you found the answer."

"Good luck," Catherine said as she headed back to help Chin search for more.

Kono turned her attention back to the room where Steve and Danny continued questioning the Wilson boy.

"What else made you leave Maui James? What other crime drove you away from home?" Steve asked suddenly.

"What? Nothing else, I'm clean," James declared quickly. Steve and Danny exchanged looks.

"Clean is not a word I would attach to you my friend," Danny growled as he took his turn moving closer to the kid. Steve glanced back at the door and waved a hand to warn Kono to wait a moment. He knew that Danny was just warming up for a rant. His partner deserved to make this kid sweat a bit.

"You are about as dirty as any one human can get. You took me prisoner for stopping you from running people off the road….who does that? No one is that stupid. My little girl almost lost her father because you panicked? No…..that is not good enough. You can't claim to be innocent because you are in this up to your neck," Danny exploded as he waved his good hand in the boy's face. "We know that you had to fear more than robbery charges to go to the extremes you did. I can smell a bigger crime on you. Just what else are you involved in?"

His stomach churning with building unease, James tried to school his face into a mask of defiance, glaring at Danny as he loomed over him. There was no way that these cops could know what else he had done; this had to be a bluff. He had been careful, he had left no prints in the house, the old lady had no security system or cameras on the premises and no one had seen him enter or leave the house. There was nothing to connect him to the crime and the cops were grasping at straws, trying to trip him up. He wouldn't fall for it; James knew that the Maui PD didn't even know of the man who had fenced the stolen items from the lady's house. His smirk returned as the door opened and the pretty lady cop walked in.

"Well, well….the scenery sure has improved," he said staring at Kono.

Giving James a quick, fake smile, Kono went to Steve and handed him the report.

"Hey Boss, Catherine thought you would find this interesting," she stated quietly. She would play nice with the boy until it was time to force matters. She looked at Danny. "Has he admitted to anything yet?"

"Nope, the punk is playing innocent. He's too stupid to know when he is beat," Danny replied.

"Really? He doesn't look stupid to me," Kono said carefully. She could see James lighten up at her words. Moving closer to him and forcing him to tilt his head back to look at her, she smiled again. "You really aren't stupid, are you James?"

"You got that right babe," James grinned back.

Danny had stepped over to look at what Steve was reading. His jaw clenched tightly as he focused on the crime scene photos.

"Wrong, wrong, wrong," he said angrily as he swung back around to face James. "Not only are you stupid but you are cruel as well. Robbing and killing an old, helpless lady is not the act of a smart man. Juries do not take kindly to people who hurt innocent women like this."

"What!" James choked out in surprise. "What are you saying?"

"What part of accusing you of robbing and killing an old woman don't you understand?" Steve said tightly as he pressed in, standing beside Danny.

"What old lady? I don't know what you are talking about."

"Mrs. Kala'i Ano, James. The lady you beat up then stabbed to death and robbed her house. Remember that little stunt?" Kono asked.

"I don't know what you're talking about," he said defiantly although his face had paled and he was beginning to sweat nervously.

"Maybe it wasn't you but a car matching your mother's was caught on camera by her neighbor around the exact time of the murder," Steve informed him. "We should probably be questioning your mother, don't you think? Or was she helping you out? Did she offer to drive you to the crime scene?"

"My mother? What? You can't know it was my mother's car," James said desperately.

"Dark red Saturn Vue," Danny chimed in, grabbing the papers Steve had in his hand and waving them in James' face.

"Your momma wouldn't be involved in a murder, would she James?" Kono said sympathetically. "But you know the Maui PD will have to look at her, bring her in for questioning."

"My mom doesn't even have that car," James said angrily. "She isn't involved in that kind of stuff."

"But she owned that car at the time of the murder, we can prove that," Kono pointed out. "That color of Saturn was a limited release; very few were sold on Maui. It doesn't look good James, I am so sorry."

Fear flickered in the Wilson boy's eyes. The thought of his mom being dragged into this made him ill. Of all the scenarios he had envisioned, his mom going to jail was not one of them. Real panic began to rise up in him as he glanced between all three people facing him. This was all going so wrong and he had no clue just what information those papers held. Was this all one big joke or did they really have pictures of his mom's car? These cops seemed to be so sure of themselves.

"James, tell us what happened to Mrs. Ano," Kono said gently, placing a hand on his shoulder. "I'm sure you can clear your mother."

Tears began to trickle down James' cheeks. Fear was holding him in its grip and all the bravado he had felt earlier had disappeared. McGarrett's expression was cold and accusing, Williams' anger burned in his blue eyes and even the pretty lady was shaking her head at him.

"My mom is innocent," he sobbed. "You have to believe me."

End chapter.

Well I think that James is beginning to crack. The kid doesn't even realize that 5-0 was working with limited information and coincidences. Maybe he isn't as bright as he thinks. Thanks for reading.
