Chapter 4

They Don't Believe In You

Sonic was still standing in front of the five Guardians. He was waiting for them to answer his questions. Bunnymund was leaning against the fireplace, Tooth was hovering in the air and looking at Sonic in worry and North was thinking of what to tell Sonic. The werehog was starting to get impatient and was tapping his left foot, continuously.

"Well," Sonic said.

"Well, where you are is easy. You're at the North Pole," Jack told Sonic.

Sonic nodded his head at this. "See, how easy is it to tell me some information?" Sonic asked. "Now, What's going on? And why has this 'Man in the Moon' chosen me as a 'Guardian'?" Sonic asked this, doing the bunny ear gesture with his clawed fingers to put emphasis on the words 'Man in the Moon' and 'Guardian'.

"Well, mate, what's going on is linked with why the Man in the Moon chose you," Bunnymund explained to Sonic.

"Okay, so what is it?" Sonic asked, folding his arms across his chest.

"Man in Moon chose you because he knew who you were. He could tell that you had something inside you that would help us. He knew that you would make a great Guardian because of your hero status," North explained.

Sonic thought about it for a moment and then looked at them. "So, it's kinda like me being a hero?" Sonic asked. They all nodded and Sonic frowned.

"Sonic, do you know what is in your core? What that special thing inside you is?" North asked Sonic.

Sonic kept his frown and nodded his head, slightly. "I think I do," Sonic said. "I think its freedom, because I stand for freedom ... also justice, but mostly freedom." The werehog shrugged after he said that.

North smiled and nodded, but he soon turned worried. "Sonic, do you want to know the reason why no one can see you anymore?" North told him.

"Yes. What is it?" Sonic said, now beginning to get extremely interested.

"It's because no one believes in you," North told him.

Sonic gasped and took a few steps back, accidentally backing into the control panel behind him. "Wh…What? That … c…can't be true," Sonic said, his voice shaking.

"It is, mate," Bunnymund said, regretfully.

Sonic shook his head in anger, fear and sadness. "NO! My friends would never give up on me!" Sonic cried.

Tooth saw that Sonic was getting upset and flew up to him. "Sonic, they haven't given up on you. No one has," she said.

"But … they said…" Sonic started but Tooth finished it, "It's true, Sonic, but they don't believe in you."

Sonic was now confused. He looked at her in confusion, "What?"

"They believe you can help them. They believe you can save them from evil. But they don't know you're a Guardian, so they don't know you exist as one. Therefore you can't be seen by them because they don't know you're a Guardian," Tooth explained.

Sonic's eyes widened in understanding and sadness, "Then that means that … Tails, Amy and Cream and all the others can't see me because of it."

Tooth nodded her head at what Sonic said. She put a hand on his shoulder, but he moved his shoulder away. She looked at him in sympathy as he turned his back to all of them.

"Is…Is there … anyway to reverse this?" Sonic asked.

"Sadly no," North said. "We have all tried to become normal again when we first became Guardians, but then we realised we had to do this. It was our duty to do it."

"So, I'll never be able to talk to any of my friends ever again?" Sonic asked, his voice sounded like his was crying.

A small tear fell from his cheek to the ground and Tooth saw this. "Sonic, please, don't cry. I've seen you hurt like this before. Don't let me see it again," Tooth told him.

"You've all seen how bad my childhood was. How I hardly ever had time to play and hang out with friends because of Eggman," Sonic told them, another small tear fell from his eye.

"Hey, Sonic, I had a life before I was chosen too. I didn't remember it though. I had a little sister. I had a family. And when I was chosen that was taken from me. But since I had been gone for years they had already … passed on. So, I had decided to do this. To make up for the life I can't remember," Jack explained to Sonic.

"But, my friends are still around. I can still remember everything. I'm going to have to go through the same pain I went through ten years ago by watching all my friends grow old and me … maybe never happen," Sonic said.

A thought then hit Sonic and he shook his head. Tooth couldn't take it any longer she flew over to Sonic and opened his mouth. The werehog exclaimed in surprise as Tooth looked at his teeth and fangs.

"WOW! I have never seen such beautiful fangs in my entire life!" she exclaimed.

"Tooth, now is not time," North told the hummingbird fairy.

She stopped, closed the werehog's jaw and looked sheepishly at North, "Sorry, couldn't help it!"

North went over to Sonic and looked at him, "Listen to me, Sonic, Man in Moon has chosen you as new Guardian. You have been chosen to be the spirit of Halloween."

"Halloween? Oh! Halloween! That's one of my favourite holidays! Other than Easter and Christmas, of course," Sonic said.

"Ha! There we go, mate! Easter is more important than Christmas! He said it first," Bunnymund told North, thinking the werehog had made a statement.

"No, Easter is not, it's Christmas," North told Bunnymund, in a matter of fact way.

"No. I didn't say either was better than the other. I said it as though I like them all the same way," Sonic told the two arguing Guardians.

The two stopped and looked at Sonic, "As in all three of them you like the best?" Bunnymund had asked that in a confused tone.

"Yea. I love all three holidays. Halloween is a time for freedom, Christmas is a time for giving and Easter is a time for … well, the same thing," Sonic told them.

The two Guardians stared at Sonic in awe, "The same thing?"

Sonic groaned and put a hand to his temple, "Can I not explain it again? I hate doing that. But, anyways, I don't understand. What exactly is this new job of mine?"

"Well, for starters, mate, every so often our enemy Pitch Black, the Boogeyman, tries to put fear into the children of the world and we're there to help them overcome his fear," Bunnymund explained to Sonic.

"And the job you have during the time we don't save the children is that every year you … well … I don't know what you will do," Tooth told him.

"So, I'm the spirit of Halloween? Is it sort of like your jobs as Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny?" Sonic asked the two Guardians that argued before.

"I guess it is. But you have to think of way to make Halloween something that shows your centre," North told Sonic.

Sonic nodded his head at this and started to walk away from them. They looked at the teenage werehog in sympathy as he began to walk away. Tooth looked at him in worry. "Where are you going?"

Sonic looked back, slightly, before shrugging and continuing to walk, "I need to be alone for a while. I need some time for all this … to sink in." He then, walked out of the giant room with the globe.

North looked to where Sonic went and stroked his beard and looked at Bunnymund, "Go after him and see what he is doing?"

Bunnymund nodded his head at North and ran after Sonic, "On it, mate!"
