Wrong Place, Very Wrong Time XVII
Disclaimer: I do not own Hawaii 5-0. The muse is so excited about the new season starting that she has been peppering me with ideas. I hope I can sort them out.
Thank you everyone for the kind reviews. Let us see just what James is going to confess.
Chapter 17
"Make us believe your mom is innocent James," Steve ordered gruffly. He was tired of waiting for the boy to confess. The crime photos had disgusted him and he had no sympathy for the young man seated before him. The increasing discomfort in his side only increased his impatience. "Given this lead the Maui PD is going to dig deep. Your mom, brother and uncle are all going to be questioned." Steve looked at Kono. "You know what Kono; I think we need to talk to Paul. I think he might be involved as well."
"No! Not Paul," James shouted out shaking his head. His brother did not deserve to be saddled with a murder charge. "Paulie would never hurt anyone." Tears were streaming down his cheeks.
"He tackled me and knocked me out cold. I'd say he's capable of hurting people," Danny commented bitterly. "Just give me a few minutes alone with the kid."
James looked wildly between the three, trying to decide if they were telling the truth. He knew he had blown it because Paul would cave under the pressure. He would never let their mom be dragged into this mess.
"It's time to be a man James. Tell the truth for once in your life because I can promise you that we will discover it," Kono said firmly. "Don't put your mom and brother through a police questioning."
"I…..I….."
"He can't handle being a man," McGarrett stated harshly. He shifted his stance, trying to relieve the increasing ache in his side.
Danny immediately noticed Steve's efforts to become more comfortable and could see the light sheen of perspiration that was making an appearance at McGarrett's hairline and on his forehead.
"James, you are aware that 5-0 has means and immunity, aren't you? If you don't know what that means then I'll tell you. It means we can do whatever we want to get the truth."
The glare that the blonde detective leveled on him finally broke James. He couldn't hide from the truth.
"Okay…okay, I did it. I killed the old lady. She wasn't supposed to be there but she surprised me. I lost it, I was angry she was home. She ruined everything," he blurted out.
"Snap out of it James," Kono ordered angrily. "Mrs. Ano did not deserve to die because she was home. You are the one who lost your temper and killed her. Own up to what you did."
The boy looked at her in shock.
"I didn't mean to kill her. I just wanted her stuff. She started screaming at me and was going to call the cops. I had to shut her up," he protested.
"There is your big mistake Jimmy boy. You wanted what didn't belong to you and you turned to violence to stop the woman from reporting you. Just where did you get the idea that her things were yours for the taking? You are nothing but a lousy thief and killer," Danny declared in disgust as he stepped away.
"I'm going to tell you what you are going to do James; you are going to give your confession to an HPD officer in a few minutes. Be thorough and give details and maybe you can convince us to go easy on Paul. If you get cute and try to deny everything you will have to convince the court that the three of us are lying. How do you think that will go?" Steve enquired pointedly.
"Not to mention you will have to explain this," Kono said pulling her phone out of her back pocket that was set on record. "We have you recorded in your own words."
James sank into the chair looking defeated. No lawyer was going to save him now; he had punched his ticket to Halawa. Tears continued to roll down his cheeks.
"Paul only knew my secret, he wasn't part of Mrs. Ano's robbery," he stated softly.
"We can keep that in mind," Steve acknowledged. "But you have to be honest in your statement. Any variation on that will reflect on your brother."
Danny had been watching Steve, observing how his friend was becoming a bit unsteady. Most people wouldn't notice but he was more in tune with Steve.
"HPD will handle the rest of this. Why don't we go upstairs and see what else Chin and Catherine have learned," he told Steve.
"Go ahead, I can handle James," Kono urged.
Steve nodded and headed for the door with Danny in his wake. They quickly headed upstairs to their offices. Once there they discovered Chin and Catherine concentrating on the smart table.
"Hey Catherine, I'm thinking the big guy needs to head home. He's looking a bit peaked," Danny announced.
"I'm fine Danny," Steve growled, shaking his head. "I can do my job." He went to the table and focused on Chin. "I need to know how Maui PD didn't follow up on the few owners of dark red Saturn Vues. Why didn't Mrs. Wilson's name come up?"
"We wondered the same thing, "Chin admitted. "It turns out that the detective heading up the murder investigation ended up in the hospital with an angina attack two days after her death. The case was shelved for a while and no one followed it up. Until we began asking questions this case took a back seat to other problems. Mrs. Wilson got rid of that Saturn the day after the murder. Evidently James thinks that disposing of cars gets him off the hook."
"Sloppy police work," Steve muttered.
"Not a surprise given the recent cutbacks in personal on Maui PD. Their police force was over-whelmed at the time," Chin explained. "They didn't have the manpower to deal with all of it. A car on a random neighbor's video didn't get the attention it deserved."
"They didn't make the connection fast enough," Cath reflected. "We had the advantage of working backwards from James so we caught it. Maui didn't have that Intel."
"Makes sense," Danny stated, well aware how budget cuts and loss of personal hurts investigations. "James convinced his mother to unload that car because it could be traced to her. He seems to think dumping cars is the answer to all his troubles."
"The boy is not too bright," Chin observed.
"He is an uninformed fool," Steve stated in disgust. "He murdered an old woman and kidnapped Danny to cover it up. He needs to go away for a long time."
"And he will," Danny promised. "Now let Catherine take you home and get some rest. We will see you on Monday."
"You are hurting too."
"And I will be going home to my beautiful daughter just as soon as I talk to Kapono Lee. I could care less about Angelo's buddies, let HPD handle those two. But I need answers from Lee; he's the one who turned me over to Angelo. I can take care of this Steve, it's my call. I deserve answers."
McGarrett might have argued but he decided it wasn't worth the effort. He would love to be in on the interview but he remembered what he had promised his doctor and his body was telling him to get some rest. It was time to let Catherine take him home.
"Okay Danno, talk to Kapono and let me know what he has to say."
"I will Steven. And stay home tomorrow as well. We don't need to see your face until Monday morning at the earliest," Danny instructed.
"Are you giving the orders around here now?" Steve asked with raised eyebrows.
"Yes I am and I assure you that once I finish my chat with Lee I am headed home as well. You won't see me until Monday after my doctor gives me clearance."
"Good," Steve nodded. He looked at Chin. "That means you and Kono too. No one comes in until Monday."
"I'll tell her," Chin promised.
"Come on Commander, let's go home. You've all ready had a very productive day," Catherine said going to him and linking an arm through his. Steve smiled down at her.
"Sounds good," he replied. "See you Monday. Danny let me know what Kapono says."
"I will…..I will," Danny promised. "Now shoo….go home."
Danny turned to Chin as the couple left the offices.
"We need Lee moved to the interrogation room. He has a lot of explaining to do," he told him.
"I'll call down and arrange it. Do you need help with this?"
"Help…..no I don't need it but why should I deprive you of some of the fun," Danny grinned. "Please, join me."
Chin called down to have Lee moved while Danny went to his office and located a bottle of Tylenol. He did not want to admit to the others how much his arm and head still ached. Moments later Chin stuck his head in to inform Danny that Kapono was moved.
"Excellent, let's go make this pot farmer uncomfortable," Danny stated determinedly.
When they arrived at the blue room they found Kapono seated in the same chair his nephew recently occupied. The old man glanced up at the cops fearfully.
"Too easy," Danny muttered under his breath to Chin. He stopped in front of the older man and smiled briefly. "Kapono, we need to talk."
"I am so relieved to see you alive Det. Williams," Kapono blurted out quickly.
"No thanks to you Mr. Lee," Danny stated. "You were the one who turned me over to that creep Angelo."
"I was trying to protect my nephews."
"So you said. Do you have any idea why James came to stay with you? Do you know what he was running from?" Williams questioned. "Were you aware that he murdered an old woman just days before he came to you?"
Shock spread over Lee's face and he seemed to shrivel before Danny and Chin's eyes.
"No. James wouldn't do something like that. You must be wrong."
"He confessed just a little while ago," Danny informed him.
"Oh God….." the older man groaned. "I should have told Lena no. She couldn't have known what he did….she wouldn't have asked that of me if she had known," he cried.
End chapter.
I do think that James is finally facing the truth, he is headed for jail. Kapono is one sad uncle but he never asked what the boy had done. Thank you for reading. I'm going away for the weekend so I am posting this early. Enjoy.
