Wrong Place, Very Wrong Time XVIII

Disclaimer: I do not own Hawaii 5-0. I make no profit from my writing but the personal pleasure it brings me.

Well folks, here we are at the end. The muse said it was time to wrap things up. Thank you so much for all the support you have given me through the writing process.

Chapter 18

Danny shook his head a Kapono and Chin decided to step in and set the old man straight.

"We're sorry Mr. Lee but your nephew did confess. We don't know what your sister knew but Paul knew what James did," Chin stated.

"Paul? No, I don't believe he knew what James did. He would never keep that a secret," Lee denied firmly.

"We don't think Paul was involved in the murder but we are sure James told him about what he did," Danny responded. "We need to confirm this and until we do, Paul is in big trouble."

Kapono hung his head, his whole body collapsing in defeat.

"I failed them. I know you are aware of my marijuana but I would never have put you at risk Det. Williams if it had been only about my crop. I wanted to shield the boys and wash my hands of the whole mess. I didn't stop to think of what would happen to you…..I am sorry."

"Did you really think Trey Angelo would just remove me from your property and then let me go?" Danny enquired with raised eyebrows. "I heard you say you didn't know how to cover up a murder. I told you I had a young daughter, you knew what Angelo had in mind for me."

Lee squirmed in his seat; he hadn't known Williams had heard the conversation he had in the yard with Angelo. Now he was told James killed someone, Kapono's life just kept getting worse. He had hoped to help his sister and her boys but it was obvious that the situation was more than he suspected.

"He told me he wanted to use you to gain an advantage over 5-0. I'm sorry Det. Williams, I hoped he would just trade you for some deal," Kapono blurted out. "I have failed everyone."

"You also sent Commander McGarrett into a situation that got him shot," Chin added wanting the old man to understand the full scope of his actions. "You can be tied to that as an accessory."

As Kapono seemed to shrink under their gaze, both men felt a small flash of pity for the man but then Danny moved his wounded arm and the discomfort erased all sympathy he might be feeling.

"I did not mean for any of this to happen," Lee mumbled. "I did not know James had killed anyone," he repeated.

"Unfortunately you are deeply tied to all these crimes now. Growing pot is the least of your worries Mr. Lee," Chin explained.

Kapono sat there mutely, unable to respond to their accusations. He had no more answers. His greatest fear was that Paul was going to face the same charges as James. He refused to believe his youngest nephew was as guilty as his brother.

"Would you like to speak to a lawyer Mr. Lee?" Danny asked.

"No…..I can't be helped," Kapono said wearily. "Find a lawyer for Paulie. I'm sure James involved him without his understanding."

"Paul will be represented and you should also be," Chin advised.

Kapono nodded knowing his fate was sealed. He knew that the fact that Det. Williams did not die would only help his case in a small way and he was still guilty.

"I don't care about myself," Kapono mumbled. "Paulie isn't a bad boy, he can be turned around."

"Paul will have to help us and be honest. He may know more than he's let on," Danny cautioned. "But we will give him every opportunity to come clean with us. Worry about yourself."

"Paul is very young, give him a chance," Kapono pleaded.

"We will see," Danny said looking at Chin, who nodded.

Kapono sighed as he slumped further in the chair. Chin touched Danny's shoulder and nodded towards the door. The two men exited the room to converse in the hallway.

"He's given up Danny. Let him talk to a lawyer, he can't dig his way out of this situation. Nothing more will happen until Monday," Chin stated.

"Should we talk to Paul?" Danny suggested.

"Personally I think he is the least criminal of the group. If he stews a bit he may open up faster. Maybe we should leave him in Kono's hands," Chink said with a small smile.

"I can go with that. Grace's movie should be almost over, I need to get a cab and pick her up," Danny responded.

"Let me bring Kono up to speed and I'll give you a ride home after collecting Grace."

"Thanks babe, I appreciate the offer," Williams said happily.

Chin made arrangements for Kapono to be returned to his cell and then filled Kono in on what they had learned from Lee. She readily agreed to question Paul and told him to get Danny out of there.

Chin drove the Williams family back to Danny's house after they collected Grace.

"See you Monday brah. Enjoy your Sunday together," he told them as he stopped in front of the home.

"We will. Do not let Commander Gung-ho convince you to come in to work tomorrow," Danny instructed.

"I'm pretty sure Catherine will not let him near the office until Monday," Chin chuckled. "I've promised Leilani that we will go on a picnic tomorrow and I have no intention of letting her down."

"Good for you," Danny approved. He looked at his daughter with a smile. "What do you say Monkey, should we defrost some of your grandmother's lasagna for dinner?"

"Sounds good Danno," Grace said eagerly. "Thanks for the ride Uncle Chin."

"You're welcome Grace," Chin smiled. "See you Monday Danny."

"After my doctor's appointment. Who knows…..that could take all morning," Danny laughed.

"Of course," Chin acknowledged with a grin before driving away.

*H 5-0*

By mid-morning on Monday the core four of the 5-0 team were gathered at their smart table to review the events of Friday.

"Maui PD brought Lena Wilson for questioning. She admitted she knew about James' involvement with the robberies and that was why she sent him to her brother. She claims she had no idea that James had anything to do with a murder. It is her story that James convinced her to sell her car because he had used it in one of the robberies," Chin filled them in.

"Do they believe her?" Danny asked.

"They do for now but they will investigate further."

"I talked to Paul after you left and the kid fell apart almost immediately. He hated keeping James' secret and seemed relieved that we knew about it. He swore James told him that he only shoved Mrs. Ano and the woman hit her head and died. When I showed him the crime scene photos he started crying and couldn't stop. I have to admit I felt sorry for the kid," Kono confessed. "He chose the wrong loyalties but I think he's basically a good kid."

"You can put a good word in for him if you want," Steve nodded. "He isn't going to walk free but there is room for leniency in sentencing unless Danny presses for more given that the kid is the one who tackled him and knocked him out."

"No," Danny responded shaking his head and thinking of his own brother. "I know what brothers do for each other. If the boy can be saved then I'm all for it."

"That's pretty generous brah," Chin approved.

"Here's an interesting twist," Catherine announced as she emerged from her office. "HPD just sent over copies of their interviews with Trey Angelo's cohorts. The Weathers siblings were talkative and Cole revealed that Angelo had a beef with a surfer who wasn't paying his debts. Guess who the surfer was?"

"Tyler Costas?" the four responded in unison. They all looked surprised.

"Didn't see that coming," Kono commented.

"Cole said Trey assured him that Costas was dealt with," Cath answered.

"Our witness stated that a large, tattooed Hawaiian did that shooting. That certainly wasn't Angelo," Danny pointed out.

"No but Trish wasted no time mentioning that a Keahi Hoke often did Angelo favors in exchange for drugs. He fits the shooter description," Catherine replied as she brought a photo of the guy up on the table.

"Oh man….talk about coincidences," Danny scoffed. "Our original crime is tied to my kidnapping in a convoluted way? That's a lot to swallow."

"Small island brah, don't complain," Kono laughed.

"Is our murdered Mrs. Ano related to our missing witness Mr. Ano from Kawela as well?" Danny grumbled.

"Sorry Danny, Ano is a pretty common name. There probably isn't a connection," Chin chuckled. "But if that concerns you feel free to investigate."

"No thanks, I don't need the headache," Danny sighed.

"I rather like knowing we've wrapped up two cases in one weekend," Catherine grinned. "There's nothing wrong with neat and tidy conclusions."

"I agree," Steve added. "Never look a gift horse in the mouth."

"Really Steven, you're digging up old clichés now? Gift horse….that doesn't sound very Navy to me," Danny quipped.

"I was trying to keep things in terms you would understand," Steve answered mildly.

"Listen here you Neanderthal; I do not need to be talked down to….." Danny began to rant and then suddenly stopped. The gleam in his friend's eyes told him that everything was back to normal and no offense had been meant. And the truth was it was a small island and Angelo was a big dealer on the North Shore and likely did have a hand in Costas' death. This explanation passed his detective's smell test and the truth was that Danny liked simple endings as well. Now there was just one loose end. "So who is going to track down this Hoke dude?"

"The cops on the North Shore are all ready hunting for him," Catherine informed him. "They will keep us apprised of the situation."

"I like that….an easy Monday," Danny gloated.

"Sorry Danno, you have a meeting with the DA's office to give your statements about James Wilson and Kapono Lee. And they want to hear all about your meeting with Ano, you can fill them in on what Catherine just learned," Steve told him with an amused smile. "I assume that will take several hours at least."

"I hate you," Danny quickly spit out. He thought about how his team pursued every lead to rescue him in time and then grinned. "But I will get over it."

End story.

And that ends this story and my muse is happy. If fact I think she is off plotting some more mayhem so we will see what she comes back with. Thank you so much for all the support you have given me throughout the telling of this tale.
