The weirdest part about the whole thing was the little chuckle that Castiel had let out after Dean had finished explaining what happened with Gabriel. "That sounds very much like Gabriel. He prefers to make a big entrance and a big exit." Sam didn't realize until later that both Dean and Castiel had purposefully avoided the fact that Gabriel had insinuated that his brother and the dark brunette were a couple.
At the moment, he was more interested in what happened when Dean had met Anna and Balthazar. "So, Gabriel obviously made a huge entrance and exit. What about Anna and Balthazar?"
His older brother nodded before Dean downed the shot of whiskey he'd gotten for himself. "Anna was a bit quieter, although she was a lot more threatening in her introduction than Gabriel was."
Dean stopped where he was, staring at the redheaded young woman behind his desk and silently wondering how the hell she got into his office. When she heard him, she looked up from the book she was reading. A smile crossed her face as she looked at him, making Dean feel really uncomfortable. "So you're Dean Winchester."
He frowned, his elder sibling instinct kicking in and preventing him from being mad at her. "Who're you?" Almost immediately, Dean wanted to take the question back because he recognized the amused glint in her eyes. It had only been a couple of days before that he'd met Gabriel. "Jeez. You're part of the Novak gang, aren't you?"
She cocked her head at him out of curiosity, just enough to make Dean believe it was a family trait. "You're very fond of Castiel," she said, completely avoiding the question, though not quite on purpose.
The P.I. shrugged, a slightly uneasy feeling settling in his gut. "As fond of a guy who helped me out as I could probably be." He nodded to her. "What's he to you? Hell, what am I to any of you that I'm causing this big of a fuss amongst you guys?"
"You really don't know, do you?" She stood, apparently taking Dean's silence as an answer. "My name is Anna Milton. Castiel is my cousin." With another smile, Anna held her hand out for Dean to shake. "If you do anything," she said as she let her arm fall back to her side after he shook her hand, "we will find you. Castiel is very important to us." Not waiting for a reply, she walked past him out of his office.
It wasn't until after Dean heard Anna's footsteps as she descended the stairwell that he moved, a look of confusion temporarily etched onto his face. When he did move, the first thing he did was pour himself a drink. "I have no idea what the hell just happened," he muttered to himself before downing the majority of his drink at once.
Sam had a huge grin plastered onto his face when Dean looked back up at him. "What? You're grinning at me like an idiot. It's creeping me out."
The younger Winchester shrugged. "You just seem to have a knack for bringing out their protective sides when it comes to Castiel." Dean rolled his eyes. "So is that all Anna did?"
"What, the ominous warning not enough for you, Sammy?" His brother rolled his eyes this time. "Yeah, that was all Anna had to say to me. Though I did find a note on my desk the next day apologizing for breaking in again but a book was left behind on my desk."
At that Castiel chuckled. "That sounds very much like Anna."
When Dean saw the smile on Castiel's face, Sam noted, his older brother let a little smile cross his face before shaking it off and moving on. "Anyway, that was Anna's visit. Balthazar, however, decided to make himself at home by breaking into my liquor cabinet."
"You have a good whiskey here from '19. Hope you don't mind that I broke into it."
Dean sighed, pulling his gun out of his shoulder holster and putting it on his desk. "I'm just tired of people breaking into my office." He took his hat off before dropping it beside his gun on the desk. "You Balthazar then?"
The Englishman grinned. "That easy to guess?"
He shrugged, pulling his overcoat off of his shoulders. "I've already met Gabriel and Anna. Figured you'd be the last one to come and visit me."
Balthazar raised his eyebrows at that. "Oh? And how's that?"
"Cas mentioned the three of you after I found out he was a Novak. He was trying to figure out how I'd found out who he was and that I was - am - a high profile target to the Novaks now." Dean paused, his hand resting on his overcoat, now folded over his other forearm. "Why'm I telling you this?"
Balthazar shrugged, pouring himself more whiskey. "I just came to tell you off if you had an intentions of hurting Castiel."
The P.I. cocked his head at Balthazar, trying to read the Englishman's expression. "Why? It's not like I'm dating the guy or anything." Balthazar took a sip of the whiskey instead of letting Dean see the little smirk on his face. "Oh, come on. You guys can't honestly believe that I'm dating Cas."
"I do hope you realize you're the one saying this, not me, Dean. As far as I know of, neither Gabriel nor Anna said anything about you dating Cas. Actually, speaking of that nickname, when did you start calling him that?" Balthazar finished his rambling with another sip of whiskey.
It took Dean a little longer than he'd admit to go through all of what Balthazar had just said. "What, Cas?" He shrugged, trying to mentally pinpoint the moment he'd called the bartender by that nickname the first time. "I guess when he showed up standing in front of my car and I thought he'd done something to it."
Balthazar raised an eyebrow at Dean. "You called him by a nickname after you thought he'd done something to your car - the same car you value above your own life and call 'Baby'?"
Dean opened his mouth to respond before looking really confused. "How do you know I call her Baby? Never mind, I don't wanna know." He cleared his throat before going back to his original thought. "It was a slip of the tongue and it was as he was leaving. It's not like I meant to call him that."
Sam grimaced, turning to look at Castiel, who as this point was actively trying not to listen to what Dean and Balthazar had talked about. He then turned back to Dean and glared at him. "Dean," he whispered, nodding his head towards the back.
"What?" Sam nodded towards the back of the bar again. Dean rolled his eyes. "Seriously?"
"Just go," Sam whispered, shooing his brother away before standing and walking over to where Castiel had decided to stare out the window. "You okay, Castiel?"
The dark brunette didn't reply at first. Finally, he said, "That was the first time I'd ever disobeyed orders." Castiel slumped, the confession apparently having drained a lot of energy from him. "Before, I had killed dozens of men. I am not actually sure how many men I have killed but I do know how many people I have saved."
Sam nodded. "Dean." He didn't need to see Castiel nod to know that he was right. Even now, six years out of the game, Sam had trouble seeing the bartender going out of his way to help people. Dean, on the other hand… "Did you tell him?"
Castiel shook his head. "And I never plan to."
