"So, what happened to not breaking Castiel's heart?"
Dean sighed, turning on the lamp on the armoire. "What happened to everyone supposedly coming after me if I did?"
Gabriel rolled his eyes, not moving from where he was leaning against the doorframe to the bathroom. "The whole point was that you weren't supposed to. Besides, we were all a little busy trying not to be killed that we missed the whole 'Dean broke Cassie's heart, let's go kick his ass' memo."
"I didn't break his heart - we weren't together," Dean said tersely, not looking at Gabriel as he did.
The brunette scoffed. "Fuck off, Winchester. We both know that both parts of that sentence are complete bullshit." He stood up, righting himself. "You popping up after all this time and announcing your marriage isn't a good way to get on Cassie's good side."
Dean scoffed this time. "I never said I wanted on Cas's good side."
Gabriel shook his head. "Man, you're just full of lies today, aren't you, Winchester?" He crossed his arms. "Listen, I know you've got a gal and you're getting married, but seriously. You get shit points for that being one of the first things you tell Cassie after not knowing where he was for six years."
"You really gonna blame this all on me? He could've come and tried to find me too. Don't even think about leaving out the part where I looked for him - for months." Dean finally turned his head to look at Gabriel. "I may not have started this off right but it isn't only my fault that he didn't know."
The blonde shook his head. "Cas was trying to avoid the whole dying situation too, Winchester. He was hiding from Michael for months after that. If you'd been able to find him, then Michael would have found him weeks before you would have."
Dean sighed again. "Look Gabriel - why're you here?"
Gabriel rolled his eyes like that was the most obvious thing in the world. "Because Cassie looked like he needs my help with you, again."
"Why would Cas need your help with me?"
That made Gabriel laugh. "Why wouldn't Cas need my help with you? You've gone and broken his heart twice now, the second time being well aware of what your actions would do to him." Gabriel walked over to Dean. "I'm here for support, Dean-o. Cas needs all that he can get at this point, especially since that lawyer brother of yours is making him go through it all again."
Dean rolled his eyes. "Sammy didn't make Cas do anything, Gabriel. He asked and Cas volunteered the information."
The brunette hummed in consideration. "Cassie sent Sam to you first, didn't he?" He grinned when Dean chose not to answer, instead choosing to place himself in his earlier chair. "Ha!" Gabriel sat down in the same chair Sam had been sitting in, opposite Dean. "Balthazar owes me a night out for losing that bet."
"I thought you were telling me why you're back, Gabriel?"
Gabriel shrugged. "Depends on the kind of mood I'm in, Winchester." He propped his feet up on the edge of Dean's chair.
The PI rolled his eyes. "If you're not here for any particular reason except to yell at me for 'breaking Cas's heart', I'm gonna have to ask you to leave so I can get some shut eye."
The shorter of the two hummed again. "You're not gonna sleep for a while are you." Dean didn't answer, which Gabriel took as its own answer. "Alright then," he said, getting up. "I'll leave you alone for now, Dean. Though I'll probably be back later. Probably in Cassie's bar." Gabriel walked over to the door and opened it, turning back to Dean before walking out. "I wasn't kidding when I said you knew what you were doing when you saw Cas again, Winchester."
Dean sighed, standing. "I know."
Gabriel grinned again. "Just so you do." He waved, closing the door as he left.
"Damn Novaks, breaking into rooms like it's nothing."
"Hello."
Castiel looked up from where he had been reading behind the bar. "Hello," he replied, putting the book down to give the blonde woman his full attention. "How may I help you?"
The woman smiled. "I'd like a glass of water. Maybe a shot of rum," she added after a moment, sliding onto a bar stool. She watched him pull out a shotglass, not calculating but sort of…fond. "I see why he likes you," the woman finally said.
"Excuse me?" Castiel turned to look at her, a confused look on his face.
She smiled again, a secretive look in her eye. "Castiel Novak, you should be ashamed of yourself for not recognizing me." The woman pulled her hair out of her face around to rest on her shoulder. "It's all in the smile, remember?"
It took a bit, and more starring than the woman probably thought was proper, but Castiel figured it out. "Mary?" The woman - Mary - smiled again, bigger this time and prouder. "Mary Winchester?"
Mary gently took the bottle of rum out of Castiel's hands. "Best not to let good alcohol go to waste, Castiel."
"You are dead."
The blonde sighed. "Are we gonna have this conversation now or after I've had a shot of rum?" Given Castiel's silence, Mary took it upon herself to pour her own shot of rum. After she'd downed it, she recorked the bottle of rum and put it back onto the bar. "Now, why do you sound so surprised? I thought you had found evidence I was still alive."
Castiel closed his mouth. "Six years ago, yes I did. However I did not believe the information I found then would be relevant now."
Mary waved a hand. "Of course it wouldn't be. Though the documents concerning my death are undoubtedly still relevant. Anything about my previous whereabouts, on the other hand, would be completely useless now." She picked up the bottle of rum again. "Now, can we go back to why I can tell he likes you?" The brunette nodded. Mary hummed to herself, content. "Where should I start? How about, he spent months looking for you? No, that doesn't sound right. He's had a spring in his step since he found you? Nah. You saved his fiancé a while back, not that he knew it at the time? Maybe that one." She looked over at Castiel knowingly. "Do you understand what I'm getting at here, Castiel?"
He furrowed his brows in confusion. "There are a number of reasons why you think he likes me?"
She grinned. "Good job, Castiel." Mary was quiet for a moment, thinking. "I haven't said his name once, yet you know exactly who I'm talking about." The blonde woman looked back up at Castiel. "I guess your relatives really did ask you about him a lot after the two of you met."
Castiel looked at Mary again, confused once again. "You know about that?"
Mary waved her hand again. "I've run into Anna, Balthazar, and Gabriel over the years, Castiel. You can't expect me to have not known who they were, your relation to them, or the fact that Dean had been investigating part of the Novak gang, no matter how brief a case it was." She looked up at him when he didn't say anything in return. "What is it?"
"I thought they were dead."
The blonde laughed at Castiel's comment. "Forgive me, Castiel, but that is a funny concept. I'm afraid it takes more than an angry head of the Novaks to get rid of any of the Novak gang, especially ones that know all of his tricks." She stopped, however, when she saw the look on the brunette's face. "They aren't hurt, Castiel," Mary said gently. Suddenly, she had to smother a smile as she looked past Castiel out the bar's front windows. "Actually, I'm pretty sure they're in town."
Castiel looked at Mary again, his forehead furrowed in confusion. "How can you be certain?"
Mary shrugged, a mischievous smile on her face. "It might have something to do with the fact that I can see Gabriel walking towards the front doors to your bar." Castiel's head whipped around to find that, yes, Gabriel was indeed walking towards Castiel's bar. Mary tapped the bottom of Castiel's chin, signalling the brunette to shut his mouth. "Do you want me to leave the two of you alone?"
He gaped for a moment, grasping for words that he couldn't find. "I-I believe you should remain here," Castiel finally decided, "if only so that I may be certain that this is not a hallucination." Mary laughed, taking a moment to refill her glass.
Gabriel wasn't sure what he was expecting when he entered Castiel's bar, but Mary Winchester drinking rum at the counter was definitely nowhere on his list of possibilities. "I think my grand entrance may have just been overshadowed," he said, making Castiel look up from his own hands. The shorter brunette grinned, throwing his arms out in a dramatic gesture. "Cassie, I'm home."
A/N: Italics are my friend and I'm pretty sure this is the quickest I've ever updated a story, unless you count that time I put up a chapter and then put up the next chapter the next day, but that's a different story. ANYWHO, reviews and critiques and comments and everything are welcome!
