The same day (Willow = 3 weeks old Effie = 7 months pregnant)
Peeta and I rush into the hospital and we rush over to the front desk. Having left Willow at home with the baby sitter in town Rachel, Peeta and I drove as fast as we could to the hospital in order to check up on both Effie and Haymitch. All either of us know so far is that Effie has been rushed straight into the emergency room with baby complications, but since the phone call from Haymitch, Peeta and I have had no word on what has happened.
"Hi there, we are looking for the emergency department?" Peeta says quickly to the woman at the front desk. "Ok, who are you looking for?" The woman says looking down at a list in front of her. "Effie Trinket" I say to the woman who once we say the name looks at us with a very sullen expression on her face, an expression of pity. "Yes… ok… she is right through that way. Give her my best, won't you?" The woman says signaling to the corridor down the left side of her, and giving us a very sad expression. Peeta and I look at each other confused at the woman's reaction and hurry down the corridor, dreading what we are about to discover.
We walk right into the emergency room and glance around the waiting room. There is no Haymitch or Effie in sight, so we take a couple of seats in the corner of the room. Unable to sit still I walk over to the drink cooler and get Peeta and I two cups of water. I walk back over to Peeta and hand him the water and settle down into his lap. We sit in silence for a few minutes before a doctor walks out of one of the rooms. Peeta and I jump up and walk straight over to the doctor franticly. "Hi, do you know anything about Effie Trinket, do you know what has happened, or what is going to happen or anything at all?" Peeta asks the Doctor. "I'm very sorry, but I can not tell you anything at the moment, once all the tests and information is processed I will be able to give you more information about the situation. All I can tell you is that, Effie is in a very critical condition." The Doctor tells us looking at the two of us solemnly. I feel the warmth rush out of my body at the shock of what the Doctor has said. Peeta thankfully nods at the Doctor and leads me back over to the chairs where he sets me back in his lap and rubs my back soothingly. We sit in silence, unable to form words between us, out of shock and fear at what is going to happen to poor Effie.
About half an hour later Haymitch walks out of one of the doors and takes a few steps before he falls to the floor with his back against the wall and his head in his hands, and begins to sob silently. Peeta and I both rush over to him and we kneel beside him. Peeta gently pats his shoulder and says "Haymitch, what's happened… how's…. how's Effie?" Haymitch doesn't answer at first still silently sobbing into his hands. After a few minutes he looks up at us and rests his head back against the wall, his cheeks red and puffy from the crying. I am utterly shocked by Haymitch's reaction. I have never before seen my mentor cry and the sight of his tears tells me that what he is about to express is not going to be happy news.
"Eff… she… she started bleeding… she was… she was in pain. I… I rushed her here… they took her in the examination room…. made me wait…wait out here. I… I ran inside the room…. there was blood… so much blood… she was unconscious. They brought her back around but… but…but" Haymitch stutters through the tears. I grab one of Haymitch's hands and hold it in both of mine, and slowly his sobs become less frequent and the tears fall fewer down his face. "What is it Haymitch, what happened?" I ask quietly. He looks at me with deep sadness in his eyes and, in my heart I know what has happened. "We… we lost… the baby." Haymitch stutters, before his head drops back into his hands and he begins to sob in full force again.
