Ch 6: CAKE DANCE

The sound of a bell attached to the door signaled a costumer stepping out of the shop a cake secured in a box in his hands. He stood in front of the door looking this way and that, the crowd walking to and fro, blocking him from moving anywhere.

Cam let out a groan, he was suppose to go over to Lillian's place for her birthday today and yet the crowd of people were preventing him from even getting a step closer to Lillian's farm. "Oh come on I just-" Suddenly the door behind him shoved itself open and hit him forward. He cried out in exasperation and held onto the cake box for door life and stumbled forward and into the crowded sea of people.

"GAH! I don't know why I had to get the cake in the first place! Darn that Howard and Laney for rushing off this morning and at the last minute telling me to get the cake!" Cam hustled through the crowd holding up the cake box, trying to keep it out of harms way.

Just then he tripped over someone's shoe, "OH FLOWER ROOTS!" He screeched as he fell face first into a billboard sign. The cake box still being held by his arms, he struggled to his feet and shook his head. Warding off dizziness.

Luckily for Cam, there was a large horse cab wagon waiting in the town square. Cam got aboard and was ticked to find it full of so many people that he was squished up against the door of the horse wagon. He was forced to use one hand to push himself back against another person so as to make sure he wouldn't squish the cake on the door.

Finally when the wagon came to a stop, Cam went to get off and was pushed forward by the crowd and he was shoved against a wall building that sported many posters for a new facility going to be built soon. The cake box was safely in his hands which were extended towards the sky.

Then he was shoved sideways and stumbled over and finally wiggled his way out of the crowd. He sat the cake box on a bench and undid the ribbon to sneak a peak of the cake and sighed in relief when he realized that it was undamaged. He redid the ribbon, but as he was about to pick it up, in a late rush, Dirk the mail carrier accidentally hit Cam on his shoulder.

Cam's body jerked and his hand knocked the cake box and it flew off of the bench. "OH NO YOU DON'T!" Cam gasped out as he reached out to grab it. He barely snatched it in his fingers, but he had leaned over the bench too far and fell forward, gravity forcing him to land face first. Thankfully his arms were outstretched and the cake box was safe from any damage.

Cam let out a groan and then sat up, the world around him spinning as he tried to regain his composure. His grasp on reality came back as he was smacked in the head with Dirk's mail carrying bag.

"Oops, sorry Cam!" Dirk called over his shoulder as he rushed off to another part of town.

"Ugh.." Cam grumbled as he slowly got up and began to rush forward, just wishing for this torture to end already. Suddenly a barking came from behind him and he glanced behind him and saw a pack of tiny brown dogs racing towards him. "AH!" Cam cried out as he broke into a sprint.

The dogs were after the sweet smelling cake and Cam was determined to get it to Lillian safe and sound. Wait, why was he doing this again? Lillian wasn't his friend…or was she? Ugh, no time to ponder about that.

Cam slipped into a shed and avoided the dogs. He peeked out of the shed and then slipped out, slowly backing up. His back hit a stationary wagon, he turned to see a pile of hay spilling out of the wagon and it came crashing down on him. "JUST MY LUCK!"

Cam was having a hard time; he was on his knees, struggling to keep his body from crushing the cake bow, which was lying on the ground underneath him. With fierce determination he grabbed the box by the ribbon with one trembling hand and arm and placed it just past his nose.

The hay finally smashing him to the ground, "Never again," Cam whispered to himself as he painstakingly crawled out from under the hay and sneezed when some hay straw tickled his.

"I'm never going outside again…" He picked up the cake box and rose to his feet and began to move forward again, spurred on by finally being able to rest when he got to Lillian's farm.

Lillian paced the kitchen in her house, her guests sitting at the table. They were all fidgeting and they were ever so bored of waiting for Cam to deliver the cake. In fact Howard had just thrown a cake in the oven, because he was for certain that Cam had just given up.

Howard was bringing the cake to the table; the candles alight with small sparks of fire. He stood in front of Lillian and smiled.

Lillian reached out, after licking her pointer finger and thumb and the she used her fingers to put out the flame. She ripped out all the candles and took the small cake and devoured it in large bites.

Laney blinked in shock and then sighed, applying her palm to her face as she looked away in disbelief.

Finally, Cam had never been happier as Lillian's farm came within sight. Cam sighed in relief as he allowed himself to quicken his pace, then suddenly he heard a screech and stopped in his tracks. He looked back and saw that he had stepped on poor Rosemary's tail. "Oops, sorry Rosemary." He said to the cat. The cat raised its head and glared icily at Cam.

Then Rosemary hissed and charged at Cam, scratching at his legs. "OWOWOWOWWOWOWO!" Cam cried out as he dodged away from the cat and then turned his back and ran. He could hear Rosemary's growling behind him and then he pushed open Lillian's door and Rosemary leaped on to his back and the cake slipped from his hand.

The ribbon unfurled and the cake box popped open and the small white butter cream frosting cake landed on the floor, becoming a little deformed on impact. Cam looked up and saw Lillian reaching down for the cake.

Rosemary watched with wide eyes, and then the cat turned tail and hid underneath one of Lillian's sofa chairs, ashamed of the mess she made.

Lillian placed the slightly crumbled cake on the table, helped Cam up and then turned towards Howard. "Candle!" She said, taking one candle out of the box Howard had in his pocket and then she placed the candle on the cake and took out a lighter and lit the candle.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY LILLIAN!" The townsfolk cried as Lillian blew out the candle, and then she cut a piece and took a bite.

"Mhhnnn! THANK YOU CAM!" The girl flung herself into Cam's arms and she hugged him with gratitude.

Cam's face went as red as a tomato, "N-No problem Lillian!"

Lillian stood in front of the cake store; it was her best friend, Georgia's birthday today. She looked around, the crowd making in front of the store almost making it impossible for her to move. Then she smiled brightly as a familiar face broke through.

Cam gave Lillian a small smirk and picked her up onto his back, piggy back style and marched through the crowd.

"You always pull through for me." Lillian whispered into Cam's ear.

"S-Shut it." Cam stammered, red face and embarrassed. Holding the cake firmly in his hands. Determined not to let this one fall, for he did not wish to let Lillian down.

He wouldn't.
